hello welcome my name is Alaric Hamacher and I will do an editing
tutorial with you for the software called SHOTCUT. We're going to cover
many things: the user interface, how to import clips, how to handle the preview
window, arrange the windows and do some basic editing. We will also see how to
scale up the timeline and fade to mute and separate audio. And put the
start title on the black and the middle title on black as well. We will
also add clips from the playlist and a music and voiceover. Finally we will
export the video and we will view it with an external player. Now let's start and have
a look at the user interface:
When you open Shotcut you get this kind of user interface: We have different
buttons for save and undo. you have a peak meter, properties, recent playlist, history...
filters, timeline and the export button. On the left side you have what is called
the playlist this area which is empty because we have not imported any
playlists yet. This is the source record player we have a peak meter and this
part will be used for showing different jobs. On the bottom part you would see
the area for the timeline we don't have a timeline yet so this is why you don't
see anything here. You have the possibility to add different tracks so
by right-clicking on the button you can add audio or video track and we just add
a video track here now. And a little bit later. The next step we are going to see
is how to import the clips. So we have shot and we're going to open files.
So these are the files from our camera and we select them all. Choose open and you
could do the same thing with drag and drop as well. You see they all go one by
one into the playlist window. So you can easily use the scroller to scroll
through them up and down. And on the bottom of the playlist you have
different functions here: So you can display as icons, you can view the
details. You can choose different options here what looks good for you. So in the view
mode you can choose if you want have no thumbnails, if you would like to
have only the large beginning thumbnails, the "in-thumbnails" or you like to have them
small because you have many clips. You can also have the beginning and the end
thumbnail on the left and on the right side by side, or if this is more easier
for you, you can have them top and bottom. You can also choose this as a grid
without the text information.
Next thing we will have a look at the preview window. This is important because
here you can preview all your clips and you can switch between project and
source view. So with source you will see the individual clips selected on the
left. With double click it will just jump into the player and you can preview the
clip here in the source player. So to do this, you see you can drag here the time
slider along the clip and choose a position where you like to go. You have
on the left and on the right these little markers where you can select and
trim a clip: This is the end point and the out point. You can also use keyboard
"I" and keyboard "O" for "in" and "out" to select these points when you come
over a marker. This can accelerate your working process. You can alos work with the mouse.
Here, you see the end point and out point. you can see the total duration and you see the
current position here on the left. When you wait a little bit Shotcut will show
you some information. If you are not sure you have a chance to get some
information when you are hovering over a button. So here you go one cut before; you
go one edit point next. So you can jump forward and backwards. You have the normal
playback where you can also use "space". And you can quickly move forward
or if you want to rewind you can do this here. Depending on what codec you have
this will go more or less well. And the play is the pause button at the same
time. Now, we did not hear any sound and we have some extra buttons here so this
is actually a zoom. So if you want to look more in detail in the image you
have the possibility to choose the size here, or to toggle between different
presets. The zoom allows you to adapt the source clip to your viewer window
and you see actually on the right we should have some sound but we don't hear
anything. So you have this little loudspeaker symbol which is the volume
control. And if you don't hear anything you can click it and this is where you
can usually turn the sound on and off. So make sure the X is off if you
want to use sound. Now we turn it on again and this is how you switch on and
off the sound. Here you have the possibility also to enter a frame number.
So this will jump hundred frames which is four seconds. So there are different
possibilities to set your current position. Now shortcut has also different
possibilities to arrange the windows as you like. So you will see that you can
drag almost every window to another part; you can separate the windows or you can
put them back in. And the window will go to the highlighted area so if you want
to take a menu out because you need a more comfortable view, you have the
possibility to move the meter or to take it away. This is how you can arrange the
window that it fits best for your workflow.
And when you see the little dots... this allows you to drag and resize a region
of a window to adapt the size. So you have the possibility to configure your
user interface very much as it is necessary for comfortable editing.
Now let's proceed to do some basic editing with Shotcut. We zoom a little bit
more in the timeline. And in order to start editing we add a video track.
So the video track appears on the bottom of your interface and you can also add an
audio track if you want to have two. This is here behind the timeline button where
you do this. You can also choose if you want to see the waveforms and thumbnails.
So as we have discussed before we can use the playlist to select a clip. And we
set the in and out point using "I" and "O" and then we can simply drag it on the
timeline. So the clip is very small so in order to see it a little bit better you
have the possibility to rescale your timeline here. And we use this little
slider here to adjust the clip size to your timeline. Now, we don't any see
anything yet and we choose to view the thumbnails. And this is how we can see
the thumbnails at the beginning and at the end of the movie. If we want to see
the waveforms we turn this on and off at this position as well.
Now there are possibilities you can scrub into the timeline. And a function you
will use quite often is: to split at the playhead. You can also use "s" on your
keyboard. And you have two possibilities to remove clips now: by using "lift" or the
"minus" which is ripple delete. So if you lift this will leave an empty space. It
will not change the position of the clips that are after this clip. Now we
can undo this. And I show you the difference if you use the ripple delete:
It is deleting the clip and it is moving the whole clip to the left. So there are
two options of deleting clips in the timeline.
Now if you want to choose a second clip. Again, we will use "I" and "O" for in and out.
And if you have an existing clip, you can choose the "plus" and it will and add the
clip at the end of the track here. So without doing anything "plus" adds the
clip at the end of the current track, so the one you have selected. This is
different from the function when you mark a clip with in and out and now you
have the clip at the playhead and you can overwrite the clip into this
position. So the "plus" inserts the clip at the end and the "arrow down" overwrites the clip.
Next thing we are going to see: timeline scaling and fading and how to do
this in Shotcut. We already use this before, when we scrub into the timeline.
So if we want to see your project or source, this is how we change this here
in the browser. And if we have a big project or a small project we can use
this slider here to scale the timeline to fit in our window. And when you move
with your cursor over the end of a clip you will see this very interesting
marker here. And I'm going to demonstrate to you what this does: I'm changing here this
property window to a filter. And you see when we drag this, this is actually
adding two filters: one for video and one for audio for fading out. So if you want
to fade to black or to mute the sound slowly with a fade, you can use this
little circle and you can ease in and out the way the clip opens or ends. So it
is very easy to make a fade to black, fade in, fade out or even transition from
one clip to another using the transition to black. So you see this you can turn it
off if you take off the filters. So you go into the filter window and click the
"minus" button if you don't want to have these filters you just click "-" and they
will disappear again. Now, let's look at another point you will need a lot: that
is muting and separating the audio. So I will show you how to do this in Shotcut.
Normally you have audio and video connected together. As you see in V1, we
have on the top, we have the thumbnails on the bottom, we have a waveform for the
audio. What we want to do now, is to separate the audio in a different track.
So we turn on the audio monitor in order to see what we are doing here.
So choose one clip. And we're actually going to extract the audio to a new
track. And to do this I'm going to select the filter tab here. And as you see, we
have no filter selected yet. And I'm going to double click a clip to select
it, and now you will see that I copy this clip to the source player. So it is going
here. And I'm going to add a new audio track and I select it. So this is
important because now we're going to overwrite only the audio from the clip
we have copied to the player. Now we need to select the original clip and we need
to turn off to mute the audio. So now we have no audio on video 1 and the audio
is only coming from the track A1. So we can add another audio track and we can
do the same thing with the last clip in this timeline: we select it, we copy the
clip to the source viewer, we select the new audio track A2 and we choose
overwrite mode to copy the audio from this clip to A2. And again we select
the audio filter with this symbol here. And in the list we choose the "mute
filter" to turn off the sound in V1. Now we're going to scale a little
bit this timeline. Because when we have the two sounds now on different tracks
there's something interesting we can do: first we can extend the audio. So if we
want to make this overlapping, we can extend the two sides. And by using the
little circle we saw before you have the possibility to very easily create a
crossfade. So if you have sound from one scene you want to go to the other scene,
you can smoothly do some audio tuning by working on two tracks.
And, if you want to change the volume of a single track, you have the "gain and
volume" filter. So this is going to affect the way the whole clips' volume is going
to be. So we can add again to the second clip also a "gain and volume" filter. You
choose the level here. This is not really mixing, but it is a sort of pre
arrangement and pre-mixing, a very easy way of arranging audio in your edit. And
the same way as you can fade out the audio, you can also fade out the video: so
this shows you how to deal with these kind of things. And you see the filters
we have added automatically show up in the filter tab.
Now we will add a start
title on a black background. How to do this in Shotcut? We have two clips on
our timeline and we want to add a black title the title on black background
before. So we will go to the "file open" menu and you will see that there are
different options here: One of them is to open a color: So you have a typical color
picker opening up; and we will choose the color black. And if we click OK we have
black in our source viewer. So, we can choose now how much black we would like
to have. So if we select in-point we could enter "100" frames (so this is 4
seconds at 25 frames per second). We need to set the out-point and now, if you want
to insert something, you can not do it with the
points here "+", "-", "overwrite" and "lift", but you can do it with "copy" and
"paste". So you use "command-C" "command-V". And this allows you to add the black on the
selected timeline. Now, since we have selected we can go to the filters and
you have a "3D Text HTML". "3D Text HTML" filter allows you to enter some text. And
let's name this "Tutorial". And of course you have many possibilities to change
the sizes. And we will add some fade-out and also a fade in. So, the title is
attached to the black on the timeline. And we have added black from the "open"
menu and added a 3D filter with 3D Text to the black.
And we can do the same thing with a middle title on black. So if we want to
make the different steps in our tutorial, we are going to do this in the same way:
So, we move at the end of our sequence and
again, we go to the "open other" menu on the top. You go to the generator for
color. Again, choose black. Okay. And if you hit "okay" the black color will go into
your source. So again here we need to choose how much duration we want. So
let's make it again 100 frames (4 seconds). We hit "i" and "O". And now we can add
with "+" at the end. So this is different from what we did before. We can now go to
the filter tab with the clip selected and we choose the video filter "3D Text
HTML". And we would like to have this a bit smaller, since this is not the
beginning title. And we will change the text here to "Step 1". And this is it! We
can also add fade in and fade out like we did before by dragging the little
circles at the beginning at the end of a clip.
Now let's do some editing by adding other clips from the playlist and try to
make a little tutorial. So we have our three clips here and the beginning title.
We will continue to browse through our playlist and we will choose the clips we
like. So, if we find a good position we hit "i" for in and if we find a good out
point will hit the "O". And one way of editing is to drag and drop the selected clip
directly to the timeline. We choose the next clip from the playlist: number 8. And
again, we try to find a significant position of the object from our tutorial.
If we want to have a global view we have the possibility to preview and select.
And again with "i" and "O" we select the in and output. And here we will use the "+"
symbol to append the clip at the end of the timeline. So there are different ways
of doing it. We want to show the assembly situation. So again, we choose an in
point and an out point,
again, we use the "+" symbol to add the clip at the end of the current track.
I continued here with a close-up of this little shoe board: Again, we make "i" and "O"
for in and out; and this time we use drag and drop to put the last clip on the
timeline. And finally to make our tutorial a bit more interesting we will
add music and voice over. So let's look at our little tutorial and see what we have
so far.
We have all our clips here and added some effects. We would like to have some
sounds... but we don't hear because we have the sound off. So please remember to
turn on the sound monitor, if you want to hear something. You want to
extract this sound to a new audio track. So you name this now here "sound" because
here we will have the sounds we want to be audible. We select the clip and we
will copy the clip to the current source player. And we will then select the sound
track, and by overwriting it will take the sound from the selected clip and put
it in the new track. And we will mute - we will add a mute filter to the clip on V1.
So we don't hear this sound on V1 and we will do the same for all the other clips.
We don't want to hear the sound. And some clips we already did it... so we're just
verifying we have a mute filter in every clip here. And the titles we used don't
have any sound. so we have some sound here now on the sound track and we would like to add
some voiceover we have recorded. So we have mp3 files with sound: "hello my name
is Alaric Hamacher". (You recognize my voice.) This
is the mp3. And we have also added some background music. So we drag and drop this.
We drag and drop this to the playlist. So our mp3 and the aaf file appear. It's good
also to save from time to time... And we will now add a new audio track. We will
name this track "voice". And one more audio track for the music so we have now video,
"sound", "voice" and "music". And we will add the first clip "hello my name is Alaric
Hamacher". And exactly like for the video you choose an in point by pressing "i".
And out for choosing the out point. And now we can
drag and drop it - exactly the same procedure. We can now put it or we overwrite it to
the selected track. So, important is: the track needs to be selected.
You can also use the arrow keys
to select an in- and an out-point. And you see we go and overwrite on the current
track the position where we want to put it. And we can also move it around by
dragging it where this voiceover needs to be placed. And if we want to add the
music on the music track, we see we have about 33 seconds so far. And we take
something like 30 seconds, and drag it on the music track. And if we need more
music
...you can take the end of the track, it changes to red, and extend the
selection we had before. And to make it end nicely at the end we can fade out
the music. And usually it's a good idea to do this in the beginning as well. So
we can fade in. And now you see that the voice is very low compared to the music.
So we want to lower the volume, and we will add a filter here for "gain and
volume". And we we will lower the music .
So the voice becomes more audible. And here we have a little sound that will mix with the
audio as well. And we will lower this with the volume because it's very loud.
And this is how we do a little pre-mix.
And just to remind you: if we want to fade the video just like the audio we
have the same little circle we can move at the end of the clip.
And finally after, finishing our editing we are ready to export the video. So we're going to watch
how to do this in Shotcut. We're going to rearrange a little bit the windows.
We saw playlist filters and the properties and now we will see the export window.
The export window allows you to select what to export: the timeline, the playlist.
So what we want to export is the whole timeline. So make sure from "timeline" is
selected. And as this is open-source software you have plenty of codecs and
formats you can choose from. And we actually want to make a very simple
play out so we will just choose h.264 as mp4. But we don't want the high resolution of
HD, so we're going to change the resolution a little bit smaller to 1280
by 720. And this is going to give us a small HD file. If we wanted to change the
codec, we could change it here. But we will just leave it to h.264 codec. And
also that audio is fine with the presets: this is high quality. And when you're
ready, you hit "export" the file, which will create a new file. So give it a name.
In this case we're going to name this "tutorial
shortcut 1". And you see we have created a new job on the right window here.
And the little blue green part shows you the progress. So depending on
how long your movie is, this can take longer or shorter. So for the purpose of
this tutorial we have accelerated a little bit to shorten your waiting time.
So now you will see this is accelerated here in the video. It does not go so fast
in reality. But then you're done at 100%.
This is how you export a video.
And when you're done you can close the application, but we recommend you save
the project nicely before.
And then we are ready to view and test our video in
an external player. So we open our folder and a media player such as VLC media player.
And drag the video we just made on it.
As we can see the video displays nicely.
The image, the sound and also the transitions and mix.
