Hi and welcome to MarcoinaBOX!
As you can see from the title, this is my first video in Italian
and I'm really excited because I've never made a video in Italian on my channel before.
If you're confused right now and you don't speak Italian, make sure you turn the captions on.
Here we are in my bedroom.
As you can see from the title, this is my first vlog in Italian.
Entirely in Italian.
Many of you asked for it.
This is one of those videos with no beginning and no ending.
I haven't prepared a script (like I normally do for my more elaborate videos)
I just wanted to have a relaxed chat with you.
Because, let's be honest: it's great to speak English and yes, I'm fluent...
Can you say "fluent" in Italian?
But I do miss Italian. First of all, it's a beautiful language!
It's a language that allows me to freely express myself, without having to think of the right words,
without having to concentrate too much.
It allows me to be more authentic, more myself.
It's such a liberating feeling!
Some people say I sound different in Italian than English
Almost like two different personalities. I don't know.
Maybe it's true.
What's true is that I do miss speaking Italian.
During the week, I speak English every day at work. Then I get home and I speak English with Alan...
The only Italian I speak is probably with my mom on the phone.
Right now, I want to talk to you more as a friend.
Especially, I want to thank you because I finally reached a very important goal...
...50,000 subscribers!!!
Thank you so much!
There's now a very loyal community of followers who keep on watching my videos and commenting.
It makes me happy and it's great to recognize your names among the comments.
And I'm grateful to you for allowing me to get here.
To celebrate this milestone, I want to make a Q&A video, entirely in Italian.
Now, I need you questions. Please, feel free to ask me anything in the comments below
and I'll reply to the most interesting questions. You can really ask me anything!
As you probably know, YouTube provide us - content creators
with YouTube Analytics,
where we can go and look at our...ahem...
how do you say it in Italian?
...statistics!
And it's interesting, because in the last 30 days, 48% of my views come from Italy!
So, it's mostly Italians who watch me.
More than 18,000 people are subscribed from Italy.
Italians are my #1 audience!
When I started this channel two years ago, I started by making videos in English.
Many people watch my videos, hear me talking in English and they get confused.
And some don't believe I'm Italian...!
Therefore, I wanted to prove it to you. Just one second...
Here you go...my Italian passport!
I decided to start making videos in English because...I don't know,
maybe because having lived abroad for several years (more than 8 years)
between the US, Ireland and now the UK for the past 3 years
English has become my everyday language.
And then, I made my first Italian-themed video. The one about Italian gestures.
It was the first video to perform really really well...it almost went viral, let's say.
After that, I made "How to be Italian" - which is my most successful video so far
(with over 850,000 views, fast approaching 1 million)
If you look at the comments, the vast majority of them are from Italians.
That got me thinking. "Why are so many Italians following me?"
I make videos in English, I don't live in Italy, and they don't even know me. And yet Italians like me.
By looking at my audience's demographics (which is fairly young), I realized that many of you actually do speak English.
Which was fantastic news to me!
It really blew my mind.
There have been so many interesting stories. Like people who told me:
"I saw your video on Studio Aperto" [national TV news]
"Yes, and they also played it on TG4" [other national TV news]
Some fans also recognized me on the street, in London.
Italy's Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked me to become a sort of "Language Ambassador",
after watching my video "ITALIAN WORDS you've been getting wrong".
When I started my channel two years ago, I would have never imagined.
This channel and the videos I make also allowed me to get a lot closer to...Italy itself.
A connection that I had lost a bit.
Italian-ness is something I miss.
Because, both culturally and linguistically, we are a beautiful country.
We have so much to be proud of. So many beautiful things we're envied for.
And yet, we keep on feeling sorry for ourselves.
Instead, we should be leveraging all these wonderful things we have in our country...
This unbelievable cultural heritage...
And by 'culture' I don't just mean works of art and sculptures,
but also our oral traditions, our cultural traditions...
We should look at all that and feel really proud.
But not 'proud' as in 'we're better than you'.
'Proud' as in 'let's keep our heads up', 'let's move on',
and keep on a building a more progressive country.
I would like my country to be more modern, more liberal,
a country that loves itself a little more.
There's so much to love about Italy!
And this is coming from someone who lives abroad and misses Italy very much.
I miss even the small things. Like people's smiles,
walking around town and bumping into your neighbors and other people from the village,
and sharing anecdotes, meeting at the local café.
The simpler life.
In Italy, we have the beauty of simplicity.
A simplicity that does not exist in big overcrowded cities such as London.
I hope that through my videos you'll be able to see this difference.
Thank you for making me re-discover this Italian-ness that I thought I'd lost.
On the contrary,
Italian-ness is something that stays inside you, in the heart.
And we must use this strength, this beauty, this culture,
to change. To change things, to improve,
to build a better country
and a better society for everyone!
Long live Italian-ness! Long live Italy!
Sounds like the President's speech :)
Going forward, I hope I can make more videos like this one.
And be more spontaneous, more straight-forward with you.
More like a conversation.
Let me know if you have any specific topics you'd like me to talk about.
[Struggling with Italian grammar]
Poor Alan...Italian is truly difficult!
Topics you'd like me to talk about.
And it will be my pleasure to do so.
With my "external" perspective.
A perspective that is often funny, other times satirical.
Italian-ness is always beautiful (but sometimes it needs to be made fun of too)
Thank you for watching this video (most likely, it will be a long one!)
And to the next 50,000 subscribers!
Don't forget to send me your questions for an upcoming Q&A video in Italian.
And as always, thanks for watching MarcoinaBOX!
