Hello again!

My name is Armenia.

My last name fell into module 5 which talks about Attitude: Functions and Consequences.

Given the title of this module it seemed appropriate to elaborate on attitude functions which is

why I decided to focus and elaborate on one single attitude function which is the social

adjustive function.

Now this particular concept mainly conveys that "we all like to be accepted by others,"

and that our attitudes helps us to adjust to an individual or a group one is comparing

to.

This function also notes that people are sometimes willing to adopt an attitude not because they

agree with it but rather because they believe they will be more accepted by other people

if they do so.

Now in order to better understand this concept I tied in the social adjustive function to

some experiences in my personal life.

I saw this function occur when my little brother changed his Samsung Galaxy to an Iphone 7

recently.

Now it's no secret the impact the Iphone has made in society.

Truth be told I've always been team Iphone myself but two years ago my 15-year-old brother

got a phone for the first time and he was convinced that the Samsung Galaxy was the

best phone and there was nothing I could say to make him change his attitude regarding

this.

This was during the summer time and as soon as he got to high school he started making

comments about disliking the Samsung and wanting to switch to the Iphone.

This took me by surprised but what was more astonishing was that he had a complete attitude

change based on what he saw his friends had.

They had been using Facetime to communicate and since my little brother's phone didn't

have this feature he was clearly not being included as much.

Now whether he truly agrees that the iPhone is better than Samsung I probably won't

know as he doesn't want to admit it to me and that's ultimately besides the point but

I could definitely see the social adjustive function play a role in this situation as

he did believe switching to an iPhone would lead him to be more accepted within his group

of friends.

Now that I have discussed this experience, I will now make some inferences.

Looking at the social adjustive function with its definitions and components I think we

could also associate it to a psychological standpoint which ties in our need for social

acceptance.

With regards to the my little brother's experience with the phones there is one detail

that I think I need to highlight which is that I don't want to portray that my little

brother's experience with the phones like he was peer pressured into getting an iPhone

because that wasn't the case.

From this experience, I witness his attitude change throughout some time from a being a

Samsung fanatic to one who didn't even bother that phone until he switched to the Iphone

7 recently.

Now that I have made some inferences, I will discuss how they can be transferred to other

situations.

I think there are multiple situations we encounter each day that involve this function.

One example I can think of can is that say you're invited to a party and there's

music playing and maybe you enjoy alternative rock music but people there go for pop music

so you add some songs and change it up to their preferred style in order to adjust to

the group and be accepted by them as well.

In conclusion, the social adjustive function explains how attitudes help us adjust to reference

groups keeping in mind that we all seek to be liked and accepted by others.

These attitude adjustments lead people to adopt the attitude that they believe will

be more accepted by other people rather than the one they truly agree with.

I hope the examples and experiences I shared before allow you to gain some more insight

and a better understanding regarding this function.

Ultimately the thing that sets it apart the most from other functions is again the that

the social adjustive function is driven by acceptance and not our original attitude.

A quote by Henry Longfellow stated, "for after all, the best thing one can do when

it is raining is let it rain," keeping his words in mind think about your attitude towards

a rainy day.

Do you love it?

Hate it?

What if I told that depending on your answer everyone you're going to see that day will

tell you the opposite.

Do you think you would you end up adopting their attitude at some point and switching

your answer to feel accepted with the crowd?

Just a thought to chew on.

Thank you for watching.

Hello, my name is Anna Cazares and I will be talking about two concepts that I found

in module 2 chapter 2: Talk about theory.

The two concepts that I will be discussing from this chapter will be determinism and

free will.

I chose these two because they are very interesting to me.

I have noticed that they are very very impactful in my professional life.

First I will talk about their definitions followed by examples in my professional life

on how they both affected it.

I will start off by defining determinism.

Determinism is a concept in which people believe that our actions are only possible because

of what traits have been inherited or genes in us.

It is also defined as surroundings that we live in or surrounding that we work in.

it the environment that we are in that helps create our actions.

Secondly, free will is the opposite of determinism because free will is the ability to perform

the action without having any traits to show that is what influenced it.

So regardless of what is inherited or any other traits and genes or surroundings around

you, you have the ability to decide for yourself how you're going to perform the act or how

you are going to make a decision.

So overall, determinism is voluntary and free will is voluntary

For example, in my professional life, I have experienced both of these concepts.

After working at HEB for 4 years I have adapted to what is expected of me.

I began working there 4 years ago and at the beginning, I wasn't sure what I was supposed

to do, but they kept telling me you must greet the customer, greet the customer, greet the

customer.

make sure that they are satisfied.

when I started working there they told me to greet the customer and keep them satisfied

to make it as enjoyable for them as it would be for us shopping there.

I do everything possible to make their experience there enjoyable.

so now I find myself at the register without even me knowing I automatically say it, "How's

your day going?

Did you find everything ok?"

there are times when I actually do not even know that I am saying this because I ask them

and they respond but a while later I realize "oh I'm at a register" and I ask them again

and they give me a face like oh you just asked me but they don't want to be rude so they

just answer but they answer in a "you asked me this already" kind of way.

so that's when I realize "oh I already asked them" and I ask them "Oh did I already ask

that?" and they say yea but its ok.

I tell them sorry I'm just so used to saying it I don't even know when I'm saying it anymore.

So I have realized that determinism has is a part of my life when I'm at work because

the environment and I are always there and it's involuntary.

the other concept that I experience at work is free will because when I am there I do

feel like I have the power to make decisions on what happens at work.

For instance that one time when I had the decision to clock out on time or go over my

hours and go clean up a wine spill.

Of course, it was "oh you have to do this" but there were a lot of other people who could

potentially clean up the spill but I made a decision that no one is going to be around,

everyone is busy, I am the only one that knows about the spill.

I can go address it to someone but they are busy or I can go over my hours to help the

company prevent them from being liable for an accident that could have been prevented.

I made that decision it was in my conscious that I had to do it.

So in Conclusion, both determinism and free will have made their way into my professional

life as you were able to hear from my examples.

Thank you.
