NIER: AUTOMATA - MY THOUGHTS ON ADAM AND EVE - Duration: 6:46.

This video won't be as lengthy as my previous one but I still wanted to jot down my current thoughts

about these two characters in particular before the game is released just for the sake of speculation.

When I first saw the character designs for Adam and Eve, I didn't think a whole lot about them beside the fact that I thought they looked pretty cool.

My very first suspicion was that they were going to be fan service characters with no major plot relevance,

seeing as they're both portrayed as rather good-looking.

But the first trailer to feature Adam and Eve turned my idea completely on its head with a neat little hint which could be hard to catch if you're not a fan of the series.

In one of the trailers for the game, there's a very short scene with Eve looking like he's up to no good at all.

At first glance, it's a pretty standard ''evil guy'' type of shot

But upon closer inspection, we can see the emblem for the Cult of the Watchers mixed within the pattern of the black tattoo that spreads up the side of Eve's body.

For those of you who don't know what the Cult of the Watchers is, I'll do a quick re-cap.

The Cult of the Watchers is a cult that was formed in the year 1000 by a character named One after the events of Drakengard 3.

One created the cult as a way to honor the memory of his 6 dead sisters who were all Intoners:

Godlike beings that use magic through the power of songs.

Once the cult grew however, One was exiled and his descendants were the ones to take over as leaders of the cult instead.

Many years later, the Cult became the driving force behind the war between the Empire and the Union,

which is the main conflict that takes place in most of Drakengard 1.

The Cult of the Watchers worship otherworldly creatures known simply as ''Watchers.''

These so-called ''Watchers'' are instruments of the Gods that want to destroy humanity.

The Cult of the Watchers main goal was to call upon these creatures and bring forth the seeds of resurrection, which would mean humanity's end.

This is where Drakengard 1's fifth ending comes into play where our main protagonist Caim and his dragon Angelus

travel to a different dimension only to end up in 21st century Tokyo together with the leader of the Watchers.

Long story short, after Caim fights and defeats the leader of the Watchers,

particles from the dead leader begin to spread through the air and infect humans to become part of the cult once more.

This is what eventually leads up the deadly disease called ''White chlorination syndrome'' spreading across the world

which is one of the major plot points in the game NieR.

People that are infected get to choose to either give up their lives and become killing machines for the sake of the Gods or to turn into a pile of salt.

Back during the time that One, the cult's founder, was exiled.

Members that were a part of the cult would be infected with a disease known as ''the red eye disease.''

The red eye disease is a disease that originally stems from One himself and although its canon explanation is still a bit fuzzy up until this day,

it essentially means that someone infected with the disease is in a pact with the Gods.

Looking at Manah, who is one of the major antagonists of Drakengard 1.

We can see that she has bright red eyes, not only when she is possessed by the Watchers but all the time.

One, founder of the cult, also had crimson red eyes naturally as the result of having been cloned from his Intoner sister.

So the red eye disease, which again, is like a pact between a host and the Gods -

lives on and shows up again in NieR: Automata.

During the trailer as well as in the promotional art, we can clearly see how it connects not only to Eve but to Adam as well,

as they're both portrayed with glowing red eyes.

The robots that we're set to square off against in NieR: Automata that are known as the ''living machines'' also have red eyes, just like Adam and Eve do.

Which opens up a load of entirely new possibilities:

What if the Watchers got tired of possessing humans and switched over to machines instead?

Or what if the ''living machines'' are a lot more human than we thought?

Does it mean that some kind of similar form of the Watchers that appeared in Drakengard 1 will appear in NieR: Automata?

Or do bad guys just look really cool with red glowing eyes?

Adam and Eve's names also carry a lot of significance,

for rather obvious reasons considering that they're both biblical names that represent the very first humans created by God.

It could of course just be a case of Japanese developers using religious themes in their work

without any real reason other than the fact that they sound cool,

which certainly isn't anything new.

But so far, we've been led to believe that Adam and Eve are not only human males but also brothers,

which would certainly give a new edge to the myth of the creation of mankind.

I mean since it's Yoko Taro I wouldn't be that surprised if one of them has a va-

Ok, but are we actually certain that Adam and Eve are human?

Well,

no.

They could be some sort of evolved form of humans that remained after the Gestalt Project was terminated after the events of NieR.

We also don't know if they're both actually male or if they just use male pronouns.

Seeing as the Watchers are genderless, it's not that long of a stretch to suggest that maybe Adam and Eve are without gender as well.

Looking at what we know about Adam and Eve's characters so far, they've been portrayed as being very yin and yang.

Although their physical designs do carry some similarities

such as the gray hair, red eyes, gold accessories, skin color and the black dragon-esque armor

Which could very well be a reference to Gabriella: the original One's dragon companion from Drakengard 3,

once again tying the two of them back to the original Intoners and the Cult of the Watchers.

They seem to be polar opposites of some sort.

Adam is more coolheaded and methodical whilst Eve is more savage and impulsive

Which leads me to think of them more as being two sides of the same coin rather than two completely different entities.

I don't know if it means they'll somehow merge together in some way,

or what that would mean but it's certainly a possibility.

The harsh truth is that we just don't know yet.

And there's no solid proof that can ensure that we will know even after NieR: Automata has been released.

For all we know it could just be a callback for the laughs of it without any actual significance other than

''Remember this old stuff we did like ten years ago? It's still pretty cool huh?''

Either way, I am insanely curious to find out just what significance Adam and Eve will have in the story

and I hope that you are too.

Please leave a like if you enjoyed the video, I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot for watching!
