Waching daily Feb 11 2017

Hello and welcome to our physical geography hazards tour.

Today we will travel to three locations and discuss hazards that occur in different types

of spheres: the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere.

So buckle up and prepare to go on an educational journey.

Our first destination takes us to the east coast of the United States.

Long Island, New York.

Long Island is an island that stretches east-northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean.

A very popular place to visit is the Montauk Point Lighthouse.

Although this is surely a place to spend your summer vacation, Long Island is susceptible

to hurricanes.

Long Island is located on the Atlantic Basin.

This means that powerful hurricanes that form at tropical and subtropical latitudes move

toward the east coast and hit the island.

Because hurricanes form over warm ocean waters near the equator, the warm waters of the Gulf

of Mexico fuel the hurricanes strength.

Hurricanes, or tropical cyclones as scientists refer to them, are storms with strong winds

that can blow as fast as 200 miles per hour.

Flooding and strong winds created by such powerful storms can lead to the destruction

of buildings, communication systems, and transportation.

It is best to avoid flood prone areas, stay indoors when the storm hits, or find high

ground and shelter if you find yourself outdoors.

On our next destination, we will travel to South East Asia to the country of Malaysia.

This country has it all; from manmade structures like the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpar,

to the orangutan sanctuaries in Sandakan.

Malaysia experiences heavy rainfalls during mid-October through the middle of March.

This is due to the role that its tropical climate has as well as monsoons.

It is the Northeast Monsoon in particular that brings the wet weather to this country.

A seasonal wind shift occurs, originating in China and the North Pacific which makes

its way to Malaysia through westerly winds.

It can rain for days and days and the rains can be short and violent.

The vast amount of rain may lead to hazards such as floods and landslides.

Flooding can go as far as washing away crops, humans, and even animals!

One reported flooding in December of 2014 evacuated more than 10,000 people and resulted

in damaged roads, schools, buildings, and crops.

Monsoons can have serious effects.

That is why it is recommended to be prepared with a disaster supply kit and have a plan

of action if evacuations are necessary.

Our final destination will bring us back to California where we will travel to the Napa

Valley.

The Napa Valley is home to many wineries including the Castello di Amorosa.

This is definitely the place to enjoy a cup of wine, but be alert.

You never know when an earthquake might hit and this location has some on record.

We know that earthquakes are the result of plate tectonics rubbing against each other.

The Napa Valley is located over the West Napa Fault which is part of a huge fault zone extending

from the San Andreas Fault.

When the Pacific and North American plates rub against each other, the tectonic tension

trickles to the West Napa Fault.

One earthquake recorded August 2014 had a magnitude of 6.0 and suffered one billion

dollars in damage.

Because an earthquake cannot be predicted, it is best to be prepared by practicing safety

precautions.

If you're at home, ask yourself "where would I be safe in my home" and practice

a "Drop and Cover" procedure.

It is also wise to secure items that may cause further damage since the rough movements of

an earthquake can be detrimental to your safety.

If an earthquake does occur, do not panic.

Find a safe, secure place and protect your head and neck.

This wraps up our tour of physical geographic hazards in different spheres.

Dedoose Video Tutorial 1: Qualitative & Mixed Methods Research using Dedoose - Duration: 11:52.

Hi, and welcome to Dedoose!

Dedoose is an amazing new web application for researchers in all fields, working with

qualitative data, and particularly those that are trying to integrate qualitative and quantitative

data together in the same project.

Some of the kinds of data that we'll see in Dedoose are the stories that people give

us in interviews, or in response to particular survey questions.

This one has some images as prompts in a study of hotel decision making.

We also have information about those people.

These are the demographics and quantitative data that we know about them, the more objective

types of facts.

We also have our code system, or "tags" that we'll use to mark up texts inside of

these documents so that we can go in and search for those themes that are particularly meaningful.

And finally, Dedoose has a variety of great data visualizations, that help you expose

patterns hidden inside of your data, and that allow you to drill in so that you can get

closer to the rich, deep meaning that sits behind these data visualization.

Click on that bubble, and we can look at the qualitative data that sits behind the visualization

itself.

But before I go any further, let me back up and tell you a little about what inspired

us to create Dedoose in the first place.

I'm Doctor Eli Lieber.

I've been working in the field of qualitative and mixed-methods research for over 15 years,

the last 11 with Tom Weisner at UCLA Center for Culture and Health.

We found out a long time ago, that there weren't any tools to help us manage and analyze the

kinds of data that we were collecting in our research.

So we started working on solutions.

Those solutions have evolved over the last 10 years, and we're really excited to share

the work we've done with you.

To start with, I'd like to say a little bit more about mixed-methods research in general.

Progressive thinkers know, that the wider the variety of tools and approaches we can

bring together on a research problem, the more likely we are to come up with effective

and efficient solutions.

We also know that all methods have flaws.

So by blending together different methods, depending on the demands of a particular problem,

the more likely we are to avoid the pitfalls and weaknesses of some methods, and capitalize

on the strengths of all the methods that we bring together to solve our research problems.

That's a win-win!

So let's talk about a real world problem, where Dedoose was employed to quickly come

up with some great answers to research problems.

The situation was this: Market researchers are trying to figure out the best way to advertise

for a new concept hotel in Las Vegas.

Quantitative data are great at answering questions like "What kind?" and "How many?".

So if we were going to approach this problem from a quantitative perspective, we'd go

out and find out things about our participants like gender, their age group, their income

level.

We might also ask them to fill out questionnaires and give us ratings on scales, like when you're

making a hotel decision, how important is it to you on a scale of 1 to 10, of cleanliness,

cost or location.

Then, what do we do with these data?

We can analyze them one variable at a time.

So, for example, age group - What percentage of our population fell into each of three

age group categories.

We can do bi-variate relationships.

Look at, for example, Males and Females, and break those out across age groups, and look

at the relative number of males and females in each of the particular age groups.

Or, we can do multivariate analysis.

SO here again, we have our males and our females for our different age groups, and we're

looking at the average importance of location for those people when they are making their

decisions about a hotel choice.

But what if we really don't know they types of questions we should be asking on these

scales?

Qualitative data are much better at getting at the why and how kinds of information, and

to get this kind of information, we really need to talk to people, to look at people,

so we can understand how culture, how emotion, how people's value systems influences their

decisions and their behavior.

A classic example of qualitative data are stories.

When people communicate their experiences through stories, they do so in natural language,

connecting the ideas together in subjective ways that they really experienced those things

in real life.

These are the kind of things that we really can't capture with quantitative data.

So these stories often come from interviews with individuals, notes that we might write

about observations, videotape and audiotape.

And these kinds of data really tap into the complexity and richness that people live their

lives in real situations.

So in the hotel study, we asked people to simply tell us stories about the last time

that they made a decisions about a hotel in Las Vegas.

So we collected all these stories, and then we searched for the themes that came out in

a consistent way that really helped us understand why people were making their decisions.

So what do we do with these hotel stories?

We go looking for themes that come out on a consistent basis, and help us understand

why people were making the decisions that they did.

So we found consistently, that luxury, sophistication and intimacy kept coming up in these stories.

So what do we do next?

We go looking through the stories for examples of texts that fit each of those particular

themes.

SO I'll use red for luxury, and see, I see something related to luxury here, and in that

particular paragraph.

ANd then I go looking for sophistication, and I might see sophistication also showed

up in this paragraph as well, and down here.

Something else that we can do with qualitative data is overlay a rating system onto when

those particular codes were applied.

So for example, people might be talking about luxury, but it might be more or less important

to them.

So if we use a 1 to 10 rating scale of importance, we can apply weights alongside the codes that

we apply.

Here somebody is talking about luxury, and maybe they are telling us that it's not

particularly important to them.

So we'll give that a 2.

Down here, again, relatively low, a 3.

Sophistication, however, is really important to this individual.

So we'll give them a higher rating for what they said here, maybe that's an 8, and here

they talked about it again, but not so much importance, so we'll give it a 5.

So what did qualitative researchers do in the past?

They were very clever about how they approached their problems.

They would use color schemes, squiggly lines under text, they'd write memos out into

the margins of their paper.

And they collected piles and piles of paper.

And then when the analysis stage came up, literally, people would take the papers and

lay them out on the floor, organized by sex, by age group, by other kinds of dimensions,

looking for patterns that really help them understand how these themes would fit in together

to understand the research problem at hand.

And though we really wanted to work in teams to come up with more objective and valid interpretations

of our data, with all the work that we'd done with this paper, it was really, really

difficult without any tools to share this information in any kind of an efficient way.

And so the teamwork piece really changed the landscape.

As people started working in teams, they increasingly crossed methodological boundaries, and more

and more people were working with people from one discipline and another discipline together

on research problems, naturally trying to bring together their methodological traditions,

and the types of data they were collecting in their research.

So that's where mixed-methods research really took off: trying to bring together all of

the richness and complexity that people communicate in stories, and all of the quantitative facts

that we collect from our populations.

So in market research we really want to narrow in a particular target group so we can develop

advertising that's sent out just to them.

From the stories, we can pull from the richness and complexity of the language that people

in that segment are using to develop messages that really resonate with that particular

population.

So Dedoose was designed to take advantage of today's internet-based technologies to

make this type of research fast, efficient, collaborative, and exposing meaningful patterns

in your research, that would've been impossible before, all helping people find the answers

they are looking for as quickly as possible.

Great research, made easy!

Now that we know how cumbersome this research was in the past, let's take a look at how

Dedoose made this project really easy.

So here we are with our hotel data inside Dedoose.

We can see we've got our themes already built out here, our codes and tag system,

we've uploaded all of out demographic and scale data, and here are some of the documents.

So let me briefly show you hot to import a document into Dedoose.

It's very simple, just go ahead and click on "Import Documents" - you can also import

batches of documents at the same time - select the document that you want to bring into the

project.

Go ahead and submit that, and we're presented with the document.

The first thing I want to do is click on my descriptor tab, and attach that to the person

that provided these data.

That way, everything we do with the qualitative data is linked to all of the quantitative

data that we have about that individual.

Then, i'm going to go through my document looking for content that is associated with

the particular themes of interest in our study.

So let's see - interviewer asks about the decisions the last time somebody made a visit

to a hotel in Las Vegas.

This person said he and his wife look for being pampered, and they say quality of service

and luxury are really important to them.

I'm going to go ahead and create an excerpt out of that.

"Luxury" and "Service", and that seemed to be particularly important, so we'll give

a weight of 8/10 on that particular tab.

Down here they are talking about sophistication.

They want to see a classy, well-mannered clientele, so we'll go ahead and create another excerpt

and tag that with sophistication, and give that a 7.

OK, so once we've gone through our document looking for themes, this is where the fun

really begins.

Let's say that our deliverable is an analysis and recommendations for advertising for hotels

in Las Vegas, broken up by particular age groups.

The perfect plot to get to that information in Dedoose is our Code-Weight Descriptor Bubble-Plot.

So I'm going to go ahead and select those tags that were particularly important in our

studies: Sophistication, intimacy and luxury, and we're going to break that up by age

group.

So what we see in this bubble, is that for the 50+ members of our sample, when they spoke

about sophistication (that's the X-Axis) and intimacy (the Y-Axis), they spoke about

these dimensions as particularly important in their decisions.

The size of the bubble itself is the average weight assigned when we use the luxury tag,

and they sort of sit in the middle of the population for that one.

So what do I want to do next?

We can export this plot, plop it into a PowerPoint presentation, ready to go, and I'm going

to use this bubble to drill into the qualitative data that sits behind the visualization.

Here's the content that we're going to want to draw on, so that when we develop our

messaging, we speak to this population in a way that really resonates with them.

I can export these, present them to our client, but even better, I might want to use Dedoose

live, so that I can work with my client and interact with them, doing the analysis live,

and help them see what's sitting behind the visualizations that have exposed certain

patterns in our data.

I hope this brief introduction has helped you appreciate the value of mixed-methods

research, and how the Dedoose design, features and costs facilitate efficient and effective

work in your research.

Nazrin: Yes, I need to talk to you.

I want you to help me investigate something.

Reimu: Investigate...?

Nazrin: There's something that's bothering me.

I want to go investigate, but I thought it would be dangerous to take action alone.

I would be thankful if you would help me...

Reimu: Okay, but what are you going to investigate?

Nazrin: As a result of my investigations, I've realized something.

The first case, Aya Shameimaru's murder case...

There are still several unsolved mysteries about it.

I want to investigate those.

Reimu: Unsolved mysteries...?

Nazrin: It's true that case has been solved.

We found the culprit, and the circumstances of her actions have been revealed.

But, the more I investigated that case...

...the more I felt something was wrong.

I feel like we missed something very important.

Reimu: ......

Nazrin: I haven't found out exactly what it is...

but I thought I should start by investigating what I can.

I'm sure the information would be helpful to you too. Would you help me?

Reimu: If that's the case, I'll happily help you.

Nazrin: Thanks, you're a great help.

Then, let's start our investigation immediately.

Reimu: [Moved from the room with Nazrin.]

Reimu: So, what are we going to investigate, specifically?

Nazrin: I think you know this already, since we investigated the "Perfume" and "Deodorant"...

My investigation ability has limitations.

Reimu: ...You mean the fact that you can only know the approximate location?

Nazrin: Yes, that's correct.

Thinking about it now, I feel my investigation during the first case was inadequate.

Reimu: You might've overlooked some evidence or facts.

Nazrin: I think there could be new discoveries if I investigate again.

Reimu: So you're going to investigate the scene of the crime?

Nazrin: No, it's somewhere else.

I have an idea.

Reimu: This is...

...The Trash Room?

Was this related to the first case?

Nazrin: No, our destination is here.

Reimu: ...The Staff Room?

Nazrin: Yes.

When we investigated the Staff Room, there was something that bothered me.

Yes, if it was a place for managing the murder game, it was clearly strange for it to not have that facility.

That's what I want to investigate this time.

Reimu: That facility?

Nazrin: You'll understand when we get there.

Yukari: Oh, hello.

Nazrin-san, do you need something from this place?

Nazrin: Yes, there's something I want you to do for me.

I want you to let us investigate the room where you keep the bodies.

Yukari: ...!

Reimu: Huh...

Yukari: ...Why did you think we have a place for storing the bodies here?

Nazrin: A foolish question.

You said so yourself, that the dead would be considered "objects" as per the rules.

Yukari: As a rule, the dead will be considered "objects" instead of players...

Nazrin: If so, the bodies are important pieces of evidence.

In a game where we battle with debates based on evidence, there's no way the game managers would dispose of evidence.

Which means the bodies would be stored somewhere.

For example, in a place like the Staff Room where the players don't usually go.

...Am I wrong?

Yukari: ...I see.

That was a pretty sharp deduction.

Nazrin: So, would you let us investigate?

Yukari: Of course you can go investigate.

It's our policy to allow you to freely investigate the game area.

But...

The Mortuary is located in a separate space, so you can't go there unless I take you.

So I have to go with you. Is that okay?

Reimu: Only the Mortuary is in a separate place?

Nazrin: ...Why did you construct it to be so annoying?

Yukari: It's to prevent players from using the bodies in their tricks.

I'm not a good person, and since I'm the director of this game, I don't have the right to talk about morals.

But...

I have enough discernment to put a stop to tricks that harm the dignity of the dead.

Reimu: ......

Yukari: Now, shall we go?

Reimu: (After following Yukari through the gap...)

(we entered a strange room without any exits.)

(Medicines were lined up in the cabinets, and innumerable locker-like equipment were placed along the wall.)

This is... the Mortuary?

Nazrin: I-It's really cold...

Yukari: If you want to investigate, go ahead.

Nazrin: Yes... This isn't a place we should stay at too long.

Reimu: So, what are you going to investigate?

Nazrin: ...During the first case, there was a piece of evidence that remained unaccounted for until the very end.

Do you know what that is?

Reimu: ...Was there such a thing?

Nazrin: It's "Aya Shameimaru's Notebook."

Nazrin: What?

Reimu: Have you found Aya's notebook?

Nazrin: Notebook...?

Shameimaru's notebook was taken away from her.

Her notebook was found afterwards, but most of the pages had been ripped out.

Mokou: Most of its pages are ripped out...!

Nazrin: The evidence Shameimaru collected have been disposed of.

Remilia thought the culprit got rid of it...

Aya's notebook contained a lot of information, so it was natural for her to think the notebook was a dangerous piece of evidence.

But, that theory should be incorrect.

We checked the number of Medals each player had, and no one used the Trash Room.

Sakuya: ...I want to confirm the number of Medals each person currently possesses.

Marisa: The number of Medals?

Reimu: ...Huh?

Then, where did the contents of the notebook go?

If it wasn't disposed of, you should've found it with your dowsing, right?

Nazrin: Yes, that should've been the case.

Because the notebook the culprit destroyed was clearly evidence that's related to the case.

But, the contents of the notebook wasn't found by my dowsing...

Reimu: What does that mean?

Nazrin: ...I have an explanation.

Yuugi was investigating with me the entire time, right?

Yuugi: First, there're several "Ultimate Weapons" left at the scene.

Nazrin: The "Master Key"...

and the "Gold-coated Model Sword."

I said this before, but my investigation ability has limitations.

Reimu: You can only know the approximate location of the piece of evidence.

Nazrin: That means...

If someone is always in the same room as me, she can trick my dowsing.

And it won't be unnatural for her to ask about the specifics of my ability if she was investigating with me.

Reimu: Huh...

You mean...

Nazrin: Yes, that's what it means.

I believe Yuugi Hoshiguma was carrying around the ripped notebook.

Reimu: You mean she was hiding that piece of evidence right next to you while you were investigating?

Nazrin: She was hiding it right under my nose.

Although it paid off for her, I think it was an extremely risky action.

Reimu: ...That must've taken guts.

Nazrin: But, it does seem possible, right?

Reimu: In other words...

Yuugi might still have the contents of the notebook.

Nazrin: Yes, that's the goal of this investigation.

The final pieces of information Shameimaru collected should be useful if we could get it back.

Then, let's start our investigation.

Reimu: ...Yeah.

......

Nazrin: Ah, Reimu. I'll be the one who investigates the bodies.

Reimu: Huh...

Nazrin: I'm a youkai, so I don't think anything about handling bodies.

There's no need for you to psychologically strain yourself. I don't mind, so wait there.

Reimu: (Saying that, Nazrin went over to where the bodies were stored...)

(pulled out the body's storage locker from the wall, and started investigating.)

Nazrin: Yuugi...

...Please excuse me.

Reimu: (Nazrin spent a few moments frisking the body...)

(and came back with several blood-stained pieces of paper.)

Nazrin: Found them. They're dirty, but it looks like we can read them.

Reimu: (Took the bundle of paper she handed to me.)

This is the contents of Aya's notebook...

It's the final information Aya left behind.

(The pages were crammed with neat handwriting, with tabs stuck between them, and countless short notes were jotted down...)

(Every part of it was filled with Aya's soul.)

(When I closed my eyes and put them close to my face...)

(they nostalgically smelled a little like Aya.)

Nazrin: ...I'll have you tell me the information, but you should keep those.

It should become useful in some way.

Reimu: Nazrin.

Thank you.

Nazrin: ...Yeah.

[Ammunition Get!] "Reporter Badge" was recorded on your notebook. If I don't have this, no one will acknowledge me as a reporter.

[Ammunition Get!] "Fire Alarm Malfunction" was recorded on your notebook. On the game's first day, when each player was being taken to their rooms, the fire alarm malfunctioned. It is a type of alarm that reacts to heat and smoke. Only Sakuya Izayoi, Tewi Inaba, and Seiga Kaku knew about the alarm's location and function. It is thought to be a machine failure, but the real cause is unknown.

[Ammunition Get!] "Solid Fuel Block" was recorded on your notebook. Nazrin found it with her "Super duper high school dowser." It is one of the game items from the Warehouse, a solid fuel block used for lighting fires. It appears to be related to the Fire Alarm Malfunction. At first glance, it looks like a rice cake, and you would not know it is a solid fuel block.

[Ammunition Get!] "Satori Komeiji's Testimony" was recorded on your notebook. Satori Komeiji has both "Ultimate Weapons," Perfume and Deodorant, in her possession.

[Ammunition Get!] "Sakuya Izayoi's Right Hand" was recorded on your notebook. Sakuya Izayoi hurt her right hand very badly. According to Reimu Hakurei's testimony, it's possible that it is not her dominant hand.

[Ammunition Get!] "Cheaply made Door" was recorded on your notebook. The doors of the rooms are made of cheap material, and outside sounds can easily be heard.

[Ammunition Get!] "Trash Room" was recorded on your notebook. A highly effective place to get rid of trash. It is also possible to dispose of "Ultimate Weapons." To use the Trash Room, one must use all Medals in their possession. Only one person may use the room at a time. While in use, the room will be locked.

[Ammunition Get!] "DDS Room" was recorded on your notebook. A place where one can reobtain "Ultimate Weapons" that have become unusable. But they cannot be redistributed until they become unusable. To use this facility, one must play Russian Roulette and win. After each use, the number of loaded bullets will increase by one. Only one person may use the room at a time. While in use, the room will be locked.

[Ammunition Get!] "Weapons List" was recorded on your notebook. A note with all the names of the "Ultimate Weapons" listed. Includes Seiga Kaku's signature. It is written with magnificent calligraphy.

[Ammunition Get!] "Bloodstains in the Kitchen" was recorded on your notebook. Bloodstains found in the kitchen on the second day. There is a lot of blood, but it is unknown whose it is.

[Ammunition Get!] "Receipt from the Bar" was recorded on your notebook. Receipt of the two people who were drinking at the Bar on the night of the second day. It is written with magnificent calligraphy. It was forced onto you by Seiga Kaku on the morning of the third day. Yuugi Hoshiguma used up all the Medals in her possession, and borrowed some from Mamizou Futatsuiwa, but it seems she used up all her borrowed Medals for sake as well.

[Ammunition Get!] "Basketball Point Chart" was recorded on your notebook. The point chart from the game of basketball at the Gymnasium on the night of the second day. It is written with magnificent calligraphy. It was forced onto you by Seiga Kaku on the morning of the third day. Cirno and Rumia played by themselves at the Gymnasium, so this is the scores of their 1 vs 1 mini game. Rumia seemed to have overwhelmingly won against Cirno.

[Ammunition Get!] "Board Game Point Chart" was recorded on your notebook. The point chart from the board game at the Cafeteria on the night of the second day. It is written with magnificent calligraphy. It was forced onto you by Seiga Kaku on the morning of the third day. Marisa Kirisame won first place with an overwhelming amount of points. Fujiwara no Mokou won second place with strategic play. Remilia Scarlet barely won third place. Sanae Kochiya fell to last place in the final stages after her strategy for a turnaround backfired.

[Ammunition Get!] "Mahjong Point Chart" was recorded on your notebook. The point chart from the game of mahjong at the Lounge Room on the night of the second day. It is written with magnificent calligraphy. It was forced onto you by Seiga Kaku on the morning of the third day. Satori Komeiji appears to have continuously won, and profited greatly. The balance of Seiga Kaku and Nazrin was about +/- 0. Tewi Inaba was the only one who lost out.

[Ammunition Get!] "Koishi Komeiji's Message" was recorded on your notebook. Koishi Komeiji's third message, which was found on the third day. According to Satori Komeiji, somebody imitated Koishi Komeiji's handwriting to forge this message.

Nazrin: Thanks for coming with me.

Reimu: Same. I'm glad you invited me.

We gained some valuable information too.

Nazrin: Shameimaru's notebook, huh.

At first glance, it looks like the things written there are old information...

but during the last Class Trial, the video footage she left was crucial.

These may unexpectedly become helpful too.

Reimu: ...I hope so.

Nazrin: Then, I'll excuse myself...

Reimu: Okay.

Nazrin: ...Oh, did you drop something?

Reimu: Hm?
