hello global public health scholars my name is Jocelyn Ruiz i'm nursing student
at the Miami campus first and foremost I would like to congratulate you for being
here and I know this was possible because of your hard work dedication to
your studies
so congratulations i was lucky enough to be part of the first group that when our
window gph abroad so I i'm very excited just to be here and talking to you guys
and kind of be mentoring / few things and just speaking about my experience
while I was away so there's four questions that i'm going to be asked
myself and giving you the answer so i hope that this the answers to this
question may be of great help to you as you guys prepare while you go abroad so
first question is how do you prepare for your gph program abroad so the way how I
prepare it was practically on I used to list that was provided by Casey foster
and professor thresher and it's going to contain the basic stuff that you're
going to me while you're away
such as you know wrinkles all mosquito repellent hygiene stove toilet paper
your password so make sure you follow that list and I had a few more self that
I thought for me was going to be essential like a hair dryer which I
ended up not using because luckily we had hair dryers in both hotels that we
stayed on
thank God other things that are very important to you should be the books
remember even though you guys are going to be away for a few days
you still have to do homework for your other classes
ok so make sure you you always take a computer some of the things that I went
there with the other girls that we went abroad to my group we decided to share
books since we only had a one-back of 50 pounds which i believe is going to be
practically or the same for you guys if it's more better but it is only 50 then
you have to be cautious about how many stuff you're taking and a few snacks but
the food wine and Panama it was awesome it was great and you guys were
going i know there's going to be amazing food so just make sure that you follow
the list write it down and as you go check it off making sure that you have
it before you actually two parts second question what was the biggest obstacle
you have to overcome during your time abroad?
honestly I did not have any obstacles before I departed I thought that one of
the obstacles that was going to have it was missing my son but honestly I did
not and that was in part because you know we kept in contact every day
through phone calls and facetiming and from the day we got over there to the
last day we were constantly busy so as you're busy you're not even gonna miss your
family and then you remember them but you know that yeah you know a call here
from there but other than that to me honestly I didn't have any
obstacles three questions how was your participation in gph program changed you
so the way how this program change me it was very very III room it was great
honestly in the reason why i say create is because I come from a third world
country i was born in hundreds and i came to the united states when I was
nine on and I left in poverty so going back to on Panama that's where i visited
on in going to business communities where we have you have under privileged
on people
it made me realize like wow a few years ago I was just one of them
I don't have the resources just like they don't have it and you have to the
health check-ups that I needed just like they don't have it so it was like an
eye-opening to me and they gave me a confirmation that this is the reason why
i'm in nursing school and I want to become theirs and this to serve to care
for and give help to those that that we really needed the most and just
appreciate things better my family
basic things that sometimes we take for granted such as AC over there in Panama
it was hot and humid and every time we got to hotel and turn on the AC it was
like oh my our and happen so just little things like that fourth question what
advice would you give to the gph scholars preparing for their journey so
one of the biggest advice that I can give you guys would be to go with an
open heart and open mind don't think about my god how it's going to be some
people I know they're worried
whatever i don't like the food or worry about where we're going to stay out
where we gonna sleep just let it happen let it be obvious you would take care of
you where you guys are going to stay you guys having a half food you guys are
gonna be staying in a great place but like i said just go with an open heart
open mine in the reason why I say that is because you guys are going down there
to teach to serve but as people are going to learn from you
you'll be surprised how much you will learn from them so be selfish with
yourself while you're down there and give the most of you can to them your
love your attention
just be there for them this is going to change you in this is going to be an
awesome experience
take it from me because this was the greatest things I've ever done so far
I loved it so guys I hope on the answer to these questions based on my
experience would actually help you to prepare and decrease your anxieties and
just go with it
your guys just a few days away from from departing so I wish you the best of luck

have a lot of fun
