Hello, my name is Mark Millican with FEMA Individual Assistance.
I would like to talk to you about housing inspections.
After you register for disaster assistance, a FEMA inspector will contact you
within two weeks to schedule an inspection of your home.
If you have a disability or access or functional need, please let your inspector know
what your reasonable accommodation needs are - for example: a sign language interpreter.
When the FEMA inspector arrives at your home, you must have:
Someone present who is 18 years or older and lived in the house prior to the disaster;
A valid photo ID;
Proof of occupancy, such as a utility bill or driver's license;
and if you own your home, proof of ownership of the damaged residence,
like a deed or mortgage statement.
Your inspector will have passed a background check and will have an official government photo ID,
which they are required to display.
Remember, the inspection of your damaged home is free of charge.
The inspection will last approximately 20 - 40 minutes.
The inspector will walk through the entire home to view the damaged and undamaged areas.
They will look for disaster-caused home damage
and essential personal property, such as appliances and furniture.
Your inspector will also ask questions about disaster-caused losses,
such as medical and dental expenses.
The inspector is there to document disaster-caused damage,
NOT to determine whether you are eligible for disaster assistance.
If you're unable to be present during the inspection,
the inspector will work with you to designate an appropriate representative.
Once the inspection is completed and reviewed, you will receive an eligibility determination
and will be notified based on your preferred method of contact.
You may receive a visit from more than one inspector, such as a FEMA quality control inspector,
representatives from the US Small Business Administration,
or an insurance adjuster.
