Video as a knowledge representation tool - Duration: 2:37.

Now we have some questions from some of our colleges as well

So one question is around the use of videos

as both an instructional tool

for the teacher to use, but also

as something that the students can use to demonstrate learning and understanding

through the creation of videos

So the teacher who sent in this question

feels that this is an under-utilised tool

and wonders what do you think about that

Video is a great resource

So first thing, let's talk about the student first

If they've got a camera in their pocket, don't ban the phone from the classroom

get them to use the thing

to record another student talking

to record themselves talking

to record and document some of their work

they're doing art or they're doing science

or they're doing - so

Use video as a knowledge representation tool

It's a great thing for learners

One of the things about these eLearning environments

is in the middle of our experiment we can put a little video

which shows what we did in the experiment

it's a way of demonstrating what we know

and what we know isn't just science concepts

there are practical things that we can do in science, for example

So that's from a student point of view - great resource

Teacher point of view

classic flip classroom argument

which is having kids sit there and listen

is not a great idea

have a recording of it so they can go fast

or go slow or go back over it

or if they missed a day it's there for them to get

and you the teacher don't have to say the same thing every year

or every term

or whenever it is that you're teaching the course

So that's a good idea

The only problem with the classroom idea

is that all we're really doing

is reproducing a traditional form of transmission pedagogy

which is the teacher speaks and the student listens

and the outcome of listening is

I can remember what was said.

That's a pretty conventional relationship

of teacher to student, a knowledge relationship

I have reservations about the flipped classroom

I do it myself for that reason

I do no lectures in my classes

which are all online

I do record things

I do videos, I keep them short in little chunks

So I do all the classic flipped classroom stuff

and it's quite helpful

but for me, the main activity is the students as knowledge producers

building knowledge themselves along the lines that I built in the video
