Hi we are HydroFLOcean and our company motto is linking people to safety our

product idea stems from a recent tragedy that happened in Limerick in August 2015

Two men were working on a maintenance platform on the Thomand

bridge the cable holding the platform failed sending the platform and the men into the water

The workers were wearing harnesses connected to the platform and life jackets as it became submerged in water

their lifejackets inflated and they were unable to detach themselves and sadly

they drowned, this tragedy led us to develop the H-FLO

The H-FLO is an attachment for a safety harness designed to be used when working

over water attached to a fixed object whether a cherry picker maintenance

platform or anything that can potentially become submerged in the

event of a maintenance platform becoming submerged in water

the H-FLO's gas canister with 10 mPa of pressure forces out a 10 mm stainless steel pin enabling the two sides of the shafts to come

loose so the user can be brought to safety by the buoyancy of the life jacket

We set out designing a 3D model of the H flow using Autodesk Inventor the

majority of the H-FLO was made by hand by the group we discussed the design

issues and then we discussed the design issues again when work did begin we

started cutting filing drilling using the lathe and milling machine to make

the shafts after that we did more filing with all the parts made we started

welding the parts together

we began doing underwater testing to assess the proof of concept and it was a

success we performed a tensile test of the prototype and the result was that

the shafts can handle up to 60 kn load before failure

the equivalent weight of six cars next we did some basic economic field testing

with the prototype attached to a harness Stephen Scully water safety Development

Officer for Cork City Council was interested to hear about the device and

expressed his interest in the concept and Jason Carroll, Foreman BAM Services

who works in aquatic environments using a mobile elevated work platform believes

the H-FLO could save lives

we estimated the cost for a mass production of the H flow is around 72

euro and 25 cent per unit the higher end safety harnesses retail at around 300

$99.99 and we can position the H-FLO around this range potential markets

include construction companies government bodies such as the ESB

and County Council's though further investigation is needed we believe that

we have a profitable important product that could save lives

the next step is to rigorously test our working prototype and ensure we meet

full safety requirements this will require further research into safety

regulations we believe that a device such as H-FLO could become a mandatory

safety device on working over water
