Waching daily Nov 5 2017

More than 4000 tonne of waste

is generated in Dhaka city.

24% of this waste

is non-compostable.

And about 50% of this waste

remains uncollected and gets disposed of illegally

in water bodies and lowlying areas.

I am Tahmina Islam

and I want to do my best

in reducing waste in Dhaka city

and encourage others to do so.

For example,

I don't need to throw away the fused light-bulbs.

I can easily up-cycle them

into spice containers or flower vases.

I can up-cycle the used pens

into funky jewellery or home decors

such as sturdy baskets and pencil holders.

I can also upcycle

the old clothes and plastic bags that we have lying around

into door mats and place mats.

Upcycling is redesigning old and unwanted products

into new ones

which is different from traditional recycling

which is converting the materials

back into their raw state

and then reusing them.

I also want to showcase

my upcycling projects

on my social media

so as to encourage others to do the same.

And, as more and more articles get upcycled,

there will be lesser waste for the city corporation to collect.

This will benefit the city

as the area for landfill will get reduced

as well as the cost for maintaining them.

Lesser items will need to be manufactured

and so the water and electricity consumption will go down.

And all this together will benefit the city of Dhaka.
