We expect a mother to visit a health facility at least during the first three moths of the pregnancy
However, in our locality here, they prefer coming during the sixth, seventh month
They feel the first three pregnant months is not relevant
It is about what is about considerations. Maternity services are local.
People prefer giving birth in the villages, compared to coming into the facility
or coming to the after natal services
The main reason they give is planning. They don't plan for the labor traditionally here.
So you find that they come to natal services very well but when the deliver comes, they say
we didn't have transport, it was at night, we couldn't make it it to the facility
basically those are the reasons they give. Lack of transport and being at night so they can't come here.
We have made a set date when we deal with adolescents, that's in Friday afternoons.
We expect to meet adolescents and still we have adolescent pregnancies in the communities.
When they come here, they are free to come here and access the services, get information, we give them family planning services
Those who are pregnant, we give them natal and maternity services.
The only challenge is I think because that stigma, there is a stigma in the community, they don't feel free with the pregnancies.
Most of them delay coming into the services.
We find out that a girl, maybe fifteen, sixteen years was living in a village and had not had natal services during the last three months of pregnancy simply because of fear.
The risk is big, as you can see. Lack of information and ignorance causes very many problems.
So we want to find most of these girls who get pregnant when they are not ready simply because they don't know about family planning services
anything about family planning, they don't know. Protection, use of condoms, they don't know
So most of them fall victims of early pregnancies. And in the communities, as long as you are pregnant, you are forced to get married to this boy
and most times we find that this person is infected with HIV, but simply because you were not aware of that the person get's infected with HIV as well as pregnant.
And in our communities, some of them, as I told earlier, the stigma with these adolescents, they might fail to come to the facility
and some of them may procure and set up abortions in the village there, and they end up dying.
So lack of information is causing a big challenge in the communities there.
Basically everything starts with information, giving information to create awareness in the community.
Because some communities in our locality they have been feeling that giving sexual and reproductive information the these young children, they see it as not being good.
They feel that we are giving bad information to children which is going to spoil them and yet we are targeting to create awareness so they wont fell victims of these circumstances.
So the best thing is creating awareness to both parents and the children
Because the parents are supposed to help their children to get these services
So if we have that, we can give information
One thing that I would change
I would love, especially for these girls, is, if it was possible every girl would be at school.
Because the education is light!
The second one what I would do to these... I don't know...
But I would feel that this sexual and reproductive health services should be taken down to the communities.
So that those who would fear to come into the facilities at the health center here.. Because this health center here is serving over 21 thousand people..
So how many would benefit from this place? Very few: Those who have the information and those who have the audacity to come
Those who are still stigmatized down there, they are not accessing this service
So if there were ways of having outreaches down there
to pass over the information about the designated places to youths, kind of walk in services especially on education and sexual and reproductive services and family planning
...among others. I think that would do well. We can beat the unwanted pregnancies and brake the ice
