3.2 Hydrocortisone liquid standard syringe - Duration: 2:53.

This video explains how to give an

emergency injection of liquid

hydrocortisone using a standard syringe.

You will need a glass ampoule of liquid

hydrocortisone containing a hundred

milligrams of hydrocortisone sodium

phosphate, some tissues, a syringe, a green

blue or orange needle. Green needles are

for larger people with a BMI larger than

30, blue needles are for adults and older

children and orange needles are for

younger children or the upper arm.

Check the expiry or best before date on the

bottle. If it's expired but it's the only

medication you have use it anyway.

Notice the blue dot. This is the breaking point.

Tap the ampoule to remove any liquid from

the top. Now, using the blue dot as a

placer for your thumb, snap the ampoule

away from you.

There's less risk of a breakage if you

use an amp snapper as shown.

Peel open the syringe

and attach the needle,

pushing firmly to connect.

Carefully remove the shield.

Hold the ampoule with your non-dominant

hand and draw up all the liquid from the

ampoule with your other.

Hold the syringe at eye level and tap

the barrel to remove any air bubbles.

Expel any air by pressing the plunger

until a drop of liquid forms at the top

of the needle. If you have a blue or

green needle, you should inject into the

middle third of the outer thigh. If you

have an orange needle, it's best to

inject into the upper arm muscle. Hold

the syringe like a dart and insert the

needle firmly into the injection site at

an angle of 90 degrees. Depress the

plunger steadily until it's empty.

Use a clean tissue to gently massage the

injection site. Dispose of the needle safely.

Now seek further medical advice

by dialling 999 or contacting your GP.

3.3. Solu-Cortef safety syringe emergency injection - Duration: 3:34.

This video explains how to give an

emergency injection of Solu-Cortef with

a safety syringe. You will need a bottle

of Solu-Cortef (this is hydrocortisone

powder for injection and the bottle

contains a hundred milligrams

hydrocortisone sodium succinate), a glass

or plastic vial of sterile water, a

safety syringe and some tissues.

Check the expiry date or best before date on

the bottle. If it's expired but it's the

only medication you have use it anyway.

Now lift off the yellow plastic seal.

Break open the water vial.

Peel open the safety syringe.

Uncap the syringe.

Put the needle into the water vial

and slowly draw up between one and two

millilitres of liquid by pulling back

the plunger.

Insert the needle into the

Solu-Cortef bottle.

Slowly depress the plunger to release

all the water and leave an air gap

inside the syringe.

Gently agitate the solution.

Once the liquid has become clear, insert

the needle back into the rubber stopper.

Tip the Solu-Cortef bottle upside down,

drawing up all of the solution into the syringe.

Make sure the needle stays below the

surface of the liquid.

Hold up the syringe at eye level and tap

the side to loosen any air bubbles.

Remove any air by squeezing the plunger

until a drop of liquid appears at the

tip of the needle. The safety syringe

needle can be injected into the deepest

area of muscle on either your upper arm

or the middle third of your thigh.

Hold the needle like a dart over the

injection site and plunge it into the

muscle. Slowly push the plunger in fully,

until all the liquid has gone. Keep your

thumb on the plunger whilst you gently

withdraw the needle. Push the plunger

again firmly. You will hear a click as

the needle springs back into the syringe.

Press down gently onto the injection site

until any bleeding stops.

Dispose of the needle safely.

Now seek further medical advice by

calling 999 or contacting your GP.

4. Emergency injections: tips and reminders - Duration: 1:11.

Maintain your injection kit by making

sure that it's in date.

Make a checklist of its contents.

Arrange a refresher practice session every year or so.

Make sure your family know where you keep

your kit and how to use it. If you feel

you're deteriorating, draw up a syringe,

date it and put it in the fridge just in case.

Carry a second kit with you,

especially for outdoor recreation and

for car journeys. Anyone can do it, even

without training. Better to be scared or

prepared for any emergency. It will do no

harm if not strictly necessary and may

save a life. If in doubt, inject.
