PLAYING GOD?

SCIENTISTS ANNOUNCE PLANS TO BUILD SYNTHETIC HUMAN DNA

Manipulating the fundamental building blocks of life is one of science`s biggest ethical

debates, and tensions are about to flare up once again as scientists have revealed a controversial

and rather ambitious plan to write the human genome from scratch.

They want to synthesize DNA and then put it into mammals, with human cells perhaps being

only four or five years away.

SCIENTISTS WANT TO WRITE HUMAN GENOME FROM SCRATCH

Almost 200 genetic researchers along with researchers in bioengineering will be heading

to New York next week to a meeting that will discuss the stages to follow of what has been

called the Genome Project-write, also known as GP-write.

This is a venture costing US$100 million to engineer, research and test a living system

of model organisms, which are said to include human genome.

THE NEW PROJECT TAKES UP WHERE THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT ENDED

The new project is said to be the follow-up to the Human Genome Project which reached

an end in 2003 following research that spanned over 13 years and which mapped out the human

genetic code.

The new project is said to be the next logical step forward so that scientists can learn

how to synthesize animal, plant and human DNA cost-effectively.

The GP-write coordinator Nancy J. Kelly said that HGP had allowed scientists to read the

genome, however, at the moment it isnt completely understood.

The scientists involved want to portray the project as being an international collaboration

that has been designed so that scientists can further their understanding of genome

science.

The project brought about a lot of controversy during the first meeting, a year ago, which

had been conducted in secret with only a hand-selected group of experts invited to talk behind closed

doors.

DETAILS OF THE PROJECT REVEALED IN PAPER Since that time researchers have become more candid

and have announced the details of the new project in a paper along with releasing a

white paper which gives the outline of the timeline and goals.

Jef Boeke, biochemist, and geneticist is one of the leading scientists on GP-write and

he said that the approach has been to consult with the scientific community to steer and

frame the research as it develops.

He went on to say that the plan was not to start off with human genome; there is a four

to five year period during which there is lots of time to talk about the wisdom of it,

if the resources should be put into that direction or if another should be taken.

He said that whenever its human genome people will have an opinion and they will

speak out and want their voice to be heard and the scientists want to know what they

have to say about the matter.

Of course, while conversations may be ongoing, the science is continuing to develop.

Boeke gave details about a project that is related which he is working on.

In the project he is working with hundreds of scientists all working together to try

to synthesize artificial yeast genome, this project is expected to be completed by the

end of 2017.

While there is a big difference between being able to synthesize the DNA of yeast and the

creation of human DNA from the drawing board, the overall goal remains the same, to find

out how to synthesis comparatively simple genetic code before then moving on to the

final goal.

Boeke said that in the end, a synthetic genome is just a new engine for allowing learning

of new information.

GP-write is the parent project encompassing the core area of Human Genome Project-write,

with a focus on human genome synthesis, either in whole or in part.

COST OF ENGINEERING GENOMES NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT DOWN Along with synthesizing animal, plant

and human DNA, the project`s goal is to bring down the cost of engineering genomes.

At the moment it is said to cost around 10 US cents just to synthesize a base pair of

nucleobase molecules making up the DNA.

When you take into account that human beings have 3 billion pairs, it is expensive.

The scientists hope to bring down the cost by over 1,000-fold in 10 years.

If the costs can be brought down and expenses loved for synthesizing DNA, it may unlock

many kinds of potential medical treatments, which may be able to target cancer or genetic

diseases, which may help the body in better accepting organ transplants, along with boosting

learning about gaining immunity to viruses.

Before this happens, the organizers of GP-write will have to raise around US$100 million in

funds, a topic which is going to be discussed in another meeting.

It is exciting, but there is sure to be a lot more controversy as the project goes ahead.

MoYu WeiLong GTS2 (GTS v2) Full Review + Comparison with GTS v1 - Duration: 3:28.

Hey guys, its me CriticalCubing and today I'm reviewing the GTS v2, successor of the

original GTS.

The first thing that you notice when you get your GTS v2, is the box.

Moyu, inspired from the premium Valk box tried to something similar to that, rather than

using their normal packaging.

The box is also magnetic...although magnets should be placed on the cube, and not on the

box.

Jokes aside, the size is 55.5mm which is the same as the Valk3.

Switching from Valk to GTS will be a breeze, and the size also makes it good for OH.

Performance is quite good and rightly so, as its the big bro of the GTS.

The original GTS was a bit unstable and this has been fixed on the v2.

Its still not as stable as the Valk3, yet its more stable than the original GTS.

The scratchy feel of the GTS remains, although its not as prominent and the GTS v2 is a bit

more smoother than the original GTS.

Speed remains quite the same and its as fast as the v1.

The design for v2 is not that much different than the v1. v2 has removed tracks from the

corners and added extra dips on the edge.

The design overall is similar, with slight modification.

The price has also increased by around 5$.

The v2 costs about 18-19$ where as the v1 costed about 14-15$.

The stickers are also high quality on the v2, and if you remember, the stickers on the

original GTS were bad and had these white line marks after some time.

The new stickers are premium and high quality and sticker shades are similar to the valk3

shades.

Corner twisting happens rarely, and popping is non existent.

Locking and catches can happen from time to time, but this will depend on your turning

style.

Overall, the GTS v2 according to me is a definite upgrade from the GTS v1.

I didn't like the v1 that much as stability was an issue.

The v2 has kind of fixed that problem, and improved on the other things like stickers.

Overall performance on both the cubes is similar, and depending on your turning style, you might

prefer the v1 or v2.

V1 is for people who like flexible cube and don't like block cube that much.

V2 is for people who want a stable cube which is not that much flexible.

Speed and rest all is similar on both of them.

I'm personally using the GTS v2 as my main over the Valk3.

Check out my comparison video which will help you choose between "GTS V2 or Valk3?"

GTS v2 is a solid purchase and I whole heartedly recommend it.

If you liked the v1, you'll like the v2 also.

That is it for this video.

Don't forget to subscribe for more content and leave a like on this video.

Thank you for watching and I'll see you next time.

Take care guys and ciao :)

Fiat 124 Spider - test - Jest Pięknie za kierownicą - Duration: 9:52.

Long time ago, when I used to drive back from work with my friend Aneta, she said she'd love to have Fiat Barchetta one day.

A woman in a roadster, hey, that could be me!

But Aneta is tall and slim, and me, um...

Can you help me?

Exactly.

There's a lot of fun in driving this car

It's small, agile, it's great on the road

And it's so nice to drive top-down!

Sounds of the engine are nice, too

But my problem is with engine itself.

This is 1.4 MultiAir turbo engine

140 HP, you may know it from Abarth 500

Sounds good, no?

Thanks to the turbo, I don't have to shift gears all the time. I'd have to shift down a gear or two to achieve this dynamic in my Mazda Miata.

But dynamic isn't everything. You have to be sure what the car will do.

Here, I'm not, cause the car stalls when I least expect it.

And yeah, I know there's gonna be a comment along the lines of "learn how to drive, you dumb cow, it won't stall then!" underneath this test

Hilarious.

Really, I laughed my ass off, but that's not the case here.

During lat 10 years, I got to drive circa 200 cars.

This excludes the cars we have or had, because it's possible I know them better

Usually I get the car, I start it, I drive it wherever I need to. That's it.

A car stalled when I was the driver maybe 5 times in my entire life - on a crossing, during maneuvering, and so on.

Twice in Fiat 124.

I don't think that's good.

I've been driving Mazda MX-5 (Miata) for the last 5 years

And to be honest, there's little difference between it and Fiat 124

Although the engine is different, the fun of driving a small, agile roofless car is comparable.

You can't really expect to have a lot of space in a roadster.

But here, there's no place for anything

There's no place for my stuff!

Well, my phone will fit here, and let's say it's a good place

But what about my mug?

Technically, you can have a cupholder here

But then a passenger will hit it with his knee

There's also a place for cupholders here in the back of the middle console

But if I was sitting like this, I'd keep hitting them

Since I'm closer to the steering wheel when driving, it's not going to be my problem, but again - my passenger's problem

Also, I won't be able to access this compartment in the back.

So what should I do?

And don't get me started on finding a place for my sunnies

I can keep them in my bag!

But the bag won't sit next to me, as it can be dangerous. The bag's place is in the boot.

This Fiat and Mazda have a lot in common, this includes the infotainment system, which I can't stand.

There's one good thing - the speakers of the hands-free system are in the headrests, which is really great when you're driving top-down.

The boot is 140 litres, 5 more than the current generation of Mazda MX-5, a twin of this car

Is it a lot? That depends.

When traveling, every litre of boot space counts...

Packing your bags can be tricky, too, especially if a bag is bulky by itself

Your luggage eats the place for extra t-shirts, lipsticks and suchlike

[For your bag-ass cosmetics bag!]

Big-ass? Can you elaborate on this?

[At least 5 litres!]

No, but you have a right to this opinion, Mark.

Let's see inside

You can open the boot using the car key or the button on the boot

If you used to drive the previous gen of Mazda MX-5, you'll notice there's no button to open the boot from inside the car. It's a small difference though.

Fiat 124 grabs everybody's attention - from little boys, and young girls

To men of certain age, who looked at it extensively at the parking lot - and I'm sure they'd give me good price for it

Sadly, for me cons outweigh the pros of this car.

Soft top is less practical in Polish climate,

It's also not comfortable to open it and close if you're my height

No place for anything inside

And the engine stalls, which kills a lot of the joy of driving.

And that about you, would you like a 2-seater with foldable roof?

Let me know in the comment below.

10 Best Places to Visit in Cambodia - Duration: 11:22.

10 Best Places to Visit in Cambodia.

Travelers who are bored with the beaches of Thailand or the natural sights of Vietnam

may be up for more ancient ruins viewing.

In this case, Cambodia can satisfy these urges.

While the larger cities are rapidly modernizing, a visit to the famous site of Angkor offers

a chance to see temples unrivaled in scale and grandeur in southeast Asia.

Among the best places to visit in Cambodia are also some smaller towns and villages that

provide a chance to experience a more traditional way of life, including treks into the jungle

and to see even more fascinating ancient ruins.

10: Kep.

Kep is a small sea-side resort that offers a variety of beach activities.

Snorkelers can enjoy viewing the corals on the bottom of the shallow sea.

Rabbit Island is a popular beach near Kep; conditions are rustic, however, with electricity

being provided only a few hours in the evening.

Most people visit the island on day trips.

Kep was founded as a colonial retreat for the French elite in 1908 and the town is still

full of ruined shells of old villas, destroyed in the Khmer Rouge days.

Visitors can also take in panoramic ocean views at Kep National Park, visit a butterfly

preserve or see how peppers are grown organically.

9: Banlung.

Banlung in northern Cambodia makes a great destination for travelers who enjoy being

outdoors.

Several tour companies overnight or multi-day trips into the jungles allowing adventuresome

travelers to get up close and personal with nature.

They offer visitors the opportunity to view a variety of monkeys and other wildlife, though

some visitors don't appreciate getting that close to leeches.

A sorter trips to Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake offers the opportunity to see deep lakes as

well as see Cambodian women doing traditional weaving.

8: Battambang.

Battambang is Cambodia's second most populous city, and is especially popular with visitors

interested in Cambodian history.

Established as a trading center in the 18th century, Battambang later became part of French

Indochina, with some colonial buildings still in existence.

The town has many Angkor-style temples and Buddhist shrines.

It is easy to get around by foot or bicycle.

Statues, mostly of animals and gods, can be found in most public places, the most famous

of which is an ancient Khmer king that is located on the road to Phnom Penh.

The Central Market also is worth a visit.

7: Kampot.

Located on a river not too far from the Gulf of Thailand is more famous for its peppers

than for tourists, though it is gaining more tourists all the time.

Kampot's black peppercorns are famous with gourmet cooks around the world because of

their unique flavor.

Kampot is the gateway to Bokor National Park, famed for its abandoned French hill station,

pleasant climate and lush primary rainforest.

Kampot also offers visitors the opportunity to go boating and rafting on the river that

winds through town, as well as take in scenic waterfalls along the route.

The Kampot Kompong Trach caves offer spelunkers the chance to see ancient ruins.

Crab curry is a popular local dish.

6: Kratie.

Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a

central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings.

There's no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the

peak season.

It is the place in Cambodia to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which live in the Mekong

River in ever-diminishing numbers.

It is estimated that there are between 66 and 86 dolphins left in the upper Cambodian

Mekong area.

5: Sihanoukville.

Named after a former king, Norodom Sihanouk, Sihanoukville is the most popular Cambodian

beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand.

Also known as Kompong Saom, Sihanoukville is where the United States fought its last

battle in the Vietnam War.

This southern Cambodia city offers both sandy and rocky beaches.

Though none of Sihanoukville's beaches would qualify as southeast Asia's finest it is

one of best places to visit in Cambodia after visiting all the Khmer and other attractions

in the rest of the country.

The beaches are popular with a variety of travelers from backpackers who stay in huts

on the beach to those who prefer the luxury of five-star hotels.

Snorkeling is popular on some of the offshore islands.

4: Siem Reap.

Siem Reap (literally "Siam Defeated") is undoubtedly Cambodia's fastest growing

city and serves as a small charming gateway town to the world famous destination of the

Angkor temples.

Thanks to those Cambodia attractions, Siem Reap has transformed itself into a major tourist

hub.

It is laid-back and a pleasant place to stay while touring the temples.

Siem Reap offers a wide range of hotels, ranging from several 5-star hotels to hundreds of

budget guesthouses while a large selection of restaurants offer many kinds of food.

3: Koh Ker.

Koh Ker is a remote temple area about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northeast of Siem Reap.

For a very brief period, from 928 to 944 AD, Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire.

In this short time some very spectacular buildings and immense sculptures were constructed.

The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high

above the surrounding jungle.

Left to the jungle for nearly a millennium, Koh Ker was one of Cambodia's most remote

and inaccessible temple destinations.

This has now changed thanks to recent de-mining and the opening of a new toll road.

2: Phnom Penh.

Phnom Penh, the largest city is Cambodia, has been its capital since French colonial

days.

Once known as "the pearl of Asia," Phnom Penh is considered one of the prettiest of

the cities the French built in Indochina though the city is still recovering from war and

revolution.

French influence can still be found today.

Located on the Mekong River, the city actually dates back to the 15th century.

Top attractions include the Royal Palace and the National Museum, which contains a large

collection of Khmer artifacts.

The night market or Phsar Reatrey is a good place to pick up handcrafted items and souvenirs.

1: Angkor.

Angkor served as the capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 14th centuries.

As such, it is filled with historic treasures, making it one of the most significant archaeological

sites in Southeast Asia.

Ruins of a thousand temples can be found scattered over farm lands and rice fields.

These include the famous Angkor Wat temple, the world's largest single religious monument,

the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom with its multitude of massive stone faces and Ta Prohm, a Buddhist

temple ruin entwined with towering trees.

Many of the temples at Angkor have been restored, making the huge palace one of the wonders

of the ancient world while offering an outstanding look of Khmer history.

Basic HTML & CSS Tutorial [HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN WEBSITE] - Duration: 5:10.

Hej och välkommna till nätverkskutt!

Hello! and welcome to our tutorial on basic HTML

and CSS. For this video

instead of making a separate CSS

document we'll be using the CSS element

in the HTML to make it simple. When

coding HTML you need a text editor like

notepad plus plus or the normal notepad

but for this video we'll be using the

editor Atom and you can download that

with the link in the description it's

completely free so there is no need to

worry about paying any money. You will

have to create a folder and then proceed

to make a file called index.html within

the folder. Now a thing that makes Atom

better for beginners is that it has many

shortcuts and tools to help you get

started quicker like for example in

this video just writing HTML and then

pressing enter we will get a basic ground

for all HTML elements we need, including

the document type, the <html> tag, the <head>,

the <body>, the <title> and their end tags. Now

in the <title> tag you can give your page

a title which is the text that will be

shown on the tab in the browser.

Now moving on to some CSS start by

adding background color to your <body> and

make it purple.

now let's make a divider also known as a <div> tag. The

divider is like a box and you can change

it's appearance, the size of it and

pretty much whatever you want.

Also always remember the end

tag it specifies where the tag is

supposed to end and everything outside

of it remains unchanged. Now let's make a

heading inside of the <div>. Inside of the heading

we can write text that will be

visible on the webpage. You can write

anything you want to.

Now let's add some CSS to give our heading

a color. You can try to find different

colors (In the description) and see if they work as there are

a lot of colors to choose from.

Now if you

have an image placed in your

folder you can place that on the page as

well, by using the <img> tag. Then use the

src, also known as source tag to locate the picture

and write the name of the images file

which in this case is "tutorial.png" (Always remember the ending, png, jpg etc.)

We also need to specify the height and

width of the picture and how it will be

shown on the page after that we are

going to add a break also known as the <br> tag to

cut off the code above some changing

anything below the break the same works

as reverse. Now we'll make a paragraph

with the <p> tag and using CSS to specify

what font the paragraph shall be displayed as.

(There are some web safe fonts in the link in the description.)

Like the heading you can write anything

you want here

we will not give our divider a class so

that we are able to change the style of

the content through CSS. You can name it

whatever you like but you will have to

remember it.

Now make a style tag and within the tag

write

.(Your classname, in this case header) and it will be

linked. Now make some curly brackets by

simultaneously pressing ctrl+alt+7 to

create an open bracket for CSS changes

to be made.

Now here are some changes we can make to

the <div> starting with the background

color which we will set to blue. We're

also going to change the width and

height of the <div> contents

We are going to make changes to the top

and bottom margins, and we'll also make our

border style double which will give our

divider two borders which will make it

look much nicer

We'll also change the width and radius

of the border and finally we will

change the color of the border.

By placing our content

<center> tag we make sure it is displayed

at the center of the webpage since the

default is displaying it at the left

side.

Here's what the finished results should look like

in the browser we can see the result of the

boarders who have made the colors we

have set and the picture we added to

fully try and understand the things that

have made try randomly changing the

contents of the index.html file and see

what happens

we hope this video helped you understand

some of the basic HTML that is used in

making web pages. Thanks for watching and

feel free to leave a like if this video

helped you, Goodbye!

Hey guys, thanks for watching Beyond Science. It's Mikey Chen.

Now I know this isn't Atlantis, I don't think,

but recently a lot continent has been found

at the bottom of the Indian ocean,

under Mauritius - a popular tourist destination

known for its species, lagoons and reefs.

The research was led by South Africa University of the Witwatersrand

and according to the research team,

pieces of leftover crust from what was once a great continent were found.

The lost continent is now dubed Mauritia,

because, well, it lies below Mauritius.

And according to the journal Nature Communications,

the newly discovered lava-covered piece of continent

is the result of the breakup of Gondwanaland,

a supercontinent that existed more than 200 million years ago

Gondwanaland was the super continent

that underwent a complex splintering,

resulting in the creation of what are now

Africa, South America, Antarctica, India and Australia,

as well as various sizes leftover continents spread across the Indian Ocean.

Now if you're wondering how they found a lost continent

Well, the research team analyzed a mineral

zircon, found in lava rocks in Mauritius.

And found that they were much older than Maritius itself.

Theoretically, there should have been no rock older than 9 million years on the island of Mauritius.

But the zircon that were analyzed

were around 3 billions years old.

This of course came off as quite a shock to the researchers

and made them realize that

there was an ancient continental crust beneath or around Mauritius

that was responsible for the appearance of such ancient rocks.

Although critics say that the minerals

could have been blow onto the island by the wind.

The lead author of this paper Lewis Ashwal said

the fact that we have found zircon of this age

prove that there are much older crustal material under Mauritius

that can only have originated from a continent.

And although the continent itself could be lost forever,

it has definitely left remnants of itself to remind us

of what was once a great continent

and has inspired the researchers to look for more fragments around the area.

So who know?

Maybe the next find will be Atlantis.

Next up, a Nazi submarine wreck has been found at 2,950 feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean

1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal.

The submarine was found through sonar imaging by Portugal authorities

as well as a German research ship.

Now what's really interesting about this find is that

it's actually the identical sistership of the U581

that was featured in films like

Das Boot and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Not only that, this boat actually has a history around it

and a grand story to tell.

From naval records, it is revealed that

this submarine sunk on February 1942

after a depth charge from a British destroyer

and the capture of 41 other members who were taken in as prisoners.

One man however actually escaped the capture by jumping into the water

and swimming for five hours straight in order to reach land.

After he miraculously reached land,

he was rescued by the German and brought back to Germany

This male was believed to be officer Walter Sitek, a U-ship commander.

After escaping to Germany, he take served again as a Uship captain

and won in Iran cross later on,

surviving the Second World War as well.

The discovery of this ship was announced exactly 75 years

after that submarine fell to the bottom of the ocean

And the German company behind the discovery is currently conduct more research on the wreck

so that we may learn more about it in the near future

I am really interested in stories about Nazi submarine

because, well, maybe I've watched one to many Indiana Jones movies.

But supposedly the Nazi did conduct a lot of research into the occult

and then they have found a lot of holy and unholy artifacts

and transported them through the use of submarines.

So I always wonder these companies that find the submarine U-boat wrecks

What they ever find, like a special artifacts

and they're like The Ark of the Covenant or A Hand of God

And if so, what would they do with that?

Let me know what your thoughts are about that

or about the lost continent in the comments below.

Thank you all so much for watching this video

I'll see you later.

How to Hide Any App on iPhone or iPad (No Jailbreak) - Duration: 4:38.

Certain situations and you are required to hide apps

and i am talking about hiding apps on your iPhone.

android, i know, dont even say, situations like

when your mom ask you to make a call, and you are like

what should i hide first, Snapchat or Whatsapp

hi, my name is Fahed and this video will help you to hide apps on your iPhone

without Jailbreaking. so lets get started.

The first & the best way to hide apps on iPhone is through iPhone restriction features

The Restrictions feature is basically aimed at users looking for parental control

However, you can also use this feature to hide apps. To enable it

you can head to iOS Settings than go to General->than tap on Restrictions.

Here, just tap on "Enable Restrictions".

Then, "Enter a Passcode. Once you have entered the passcode twice

The Restrictions feature will be enabled. Then, you can just disable the toggles

for stock iOS apps like Safari, Camera, Siri, Facetime, App Store, Podcasts etc

to hide them

To hide third party apps, scroll down, and in the "Allowed Content" section

go to "Apps". Here, you can hide all the third party apps

or you can hide apps based on their age ratings

There's no way to hide specific apps, but you can use the "12+" option

to hide dating apps like tinder or use the 9+ option to hide social apps like Instagram

You can check out the age ratings of different apps in the App Store.

the disabled apps are hidden from the homescreen as well as search

Also they remain hidden even after you've restarted your iPhone or iPad

and you can only get your hidden apps back by disabling the Restrictions

feature through your passcode

now what if you want to hide application like messages, an applications

like photos, which apple does not allow you to, well here is the trick

so put three application inside of a folder, so i am going to bring three apps

from a different page and put them inside a folder just like that

i press the home button once than i go back and remove all the apps out

of the folder except the application that i want to delete

in this case im going to use the messages application. so lets say

i want to delete messages, now i have messages inside of a folder by itself

New StudyStandard American Diet Causes Nearly Half of All Deaths- health - Duration: 8:55.

New Study: Standard American Diet Causes Nearly Half of All Deaths from Heart Disease, Stroke

and Type 2 Diabetes

It should come as no surprise that our diet plays a critical role in our health and longevity,

but the sheer level of influence may come as a shock to you.

A new study published in the March 7 issue of JAMA found that poor diet is responsible

for an astonishing 45 percent of all deaths from heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes

in the US.

The researchers attributed this high mortality rate to the Standard American Diet (SAD),

which is high in sodium, processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and unprocessed

red meats.

The good news is, just as diet can be our downfall, its also just as powerful in

promoting exceptional health and longevity as seen in Blue Zone cultures, who

are known for their extraordinary lifespan and phenomenal vitality.

A Deadly Trinity of Disease, Directly Linked to Poor Food Choices

According to the newly released JAMA study, which was funded by the National Heart, Lung

and Blood Institute (NHLBI), nearly half of all US deaths in 2012 caused by cardiometabolic

diseases like heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes are due to poor diet.

Out of the 702,308 adult deaths from cardiometabolic diseases, 318,656 about 45 percent were

linked with over-consumption of certain unhealthy foods, as well as low consumption of specific

nutrient dense edibles.

Nationally, estimated cardiometabolic deaths related to insufficient healthier foods/nutrients

remained at least as substantial as those related to excess unhealthful foods/nutrients,

said lead researcher Renata Micha, RD, PhD, of the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition

Science and Policy, Boston.

Excess consumption of sodium was associated with the highest percentage of death.

Consuming high amounts of processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and unprocessed

red meat were also linked with high mortality.

Americans also dont eat enough of certain health-promoting foods like fruit, vegetables,

nuts and seeds, whole grains, polyunsaturated fats and seafood omega-3 fats.

Among unhealthful foods/nutrients, the present findings suggest that sodium is a

key target, noted the researchers.

Population-wide salt reduction policies that include a strong government role to educate

the public and engage industry to gradually reduce salt content in processed foods (for

example, as implemented in the United Kingdom and Turkey) appear to be effective, equitable,

and highly cost-effective or even cost-saving. According to a press release from the NHLBI:

The study also shows that the proportion of deaths associated with diet varied across

population groups.

For instance, death rates were higher among men when compared to women; among blacks and

Hispanics compared to whites; and among those with lower education levels, compared with

their higher-educated counterparts. The findings of the study were based on death

certificate data from the National Center of Health Statistics.

With annual US healthcare spending hitting $3.8 trillion in 2014 and $3.2 trillion in

2016 heart disease and stroke costing nearly $1 billion a day in medical costs along

with lost productivity, and diabetes totaling $245 billion annually the results of this

study come as a stark reality check.

However, they can also help encourage positive outcomes, such as new public health strategies,

public education programs, and revamped industry standards.

For inspiration, we can also look to cultures and communities that have outstanding health

and longevity for guidance and a perfect place to start is with the Blue Zones.

The Island Where People Forgot to Die

Just off the coast of Turkey, very close to Samos, where Pythagoras and Epicurus lived,

is a Greek island named Ikaria that is renown as the island where people forgot to die

because of the exceptional lifespan of its inhabitants.

Included in what is referred to as the Blue Zones five regions in Europe, Latin America,

Asia and the US with the highest concentrations of centenarians in the world the people

of Ikaria live about eight years longer than average and have exceedingly good health.

These communities are also largely free of health complaints like obesity, cancer, diabetes

and heart disease.

Moreover, theyre sharp to the very end, whereas in the US, almost half the population

over 85 suffers from dementia.

Diet is a key ingredient to their robust health and longevity.

In Ikaria, theyre eating a variety of a Mediterranean diet, but with lots of potatoes.

They also consume high amounts of beans.

One unique foodstuff is called horta, a weed-like green thats eaten as a salad, lightly steamed

or baked into pies.

Goats milk, wine, honey, some fruit and small amounts of fish are also enjoyed.

Other foods include feta cheese, lemons and herbs such as sage and marjoram, which are

made into tea.

Lifestyle also comes into play.

Plenty of sex (even in old age) and napping are integral aspects of the culture, as is

physical activity.

There are no treadmills or aerobic classes here.

Instead, exercise involves planting and maintaining a garden, manual labor (houses in Ikaria only

have hand tools) and walking to run errands.

Another Blue Zone region is Sardinia, Italy where goats milk and sheeps cheese are

staples, along with moderate amounts of flat bread, sourdough bread and barley.

They also eat plenty of fennel, fava beans, tomatoes, chickpeas, almonds, milk thistle

tea and wine from Grenache grapes.

Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California made the list as well.

The community shuns smoking, drinking and dancing, while also avoiding movies, television

and other media distractions.

Their diet focuses on grains, fruits, nuts, vegetables and they only drink water.

Sugar, except for natural sources found in whole fruit, is taboo.

Adventists who follow the religions lifestyle live about 10 years longer than those who

dont.

Interestingly, pesco-vegetarians in the community, who include up to one serving of fish per

day with their plant-based diet, live longer than vegan Adventists.

Avocados, salmon, beans, oatmeal, avocados, whole wheat bread and soy milk make up the

bulk of their diet.

Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica also has a high number of centenarians.

Theirs is a traditional Mesoamerican diet of beans, corn and squash plus papayas,

yams, bananas and peach palms (an oval fruit dense in vitamins A and C).

The final Blue Zone is Okinawa, Japan.

Their top longevity foods are bitter melons, seaweed, turmeric, sweet potato, tofu,

garlic, brown rice, green tea and shitake mushrooms.

All Blue Zones share the following characteristics:

Only eat until youre 80 percent full.

The smallest meal of the day is always in the late afternoon or evening.

Diet consists mostly plants, especially beans.

Meat is eaten rarely on average of just five times a month and in small portions

of about 3 to 4 ounces.

Moderate amounts of wine is consumed with 1-2 glasses per day (doesnt apply to Seventh-day

Adventists).

A sense of community and close social bonds, often with religious underpinnings.

Although the secret to Blue Zone longevity doesnt rely exclusively on diet, its

certainly a core foundation for their exceptional health and vitality.

We can take a cue from these regions and integrate their wisdom into our own lives for improved

well-being.

Have a look at these quick and easy Blue Zone recipes for inspiration.
