Simply stated, the Law of Attraction, or "The Secret", is the assertion that we can attract
into our lives whatever we focus on, because our thoughts and feelings send out "vibrational
frequencies" to the universe through the Law of Vibration, which causes the universe
to consciously send us events and circumstances of the same frequency…
For example, if you're experiencing (and hence sending) negative thoughts and feelings
(or vibrations), the universe will deliberately respond to you with negative events and circumstances
(or vibrations).
This is, the Law of Attraction – Debunked.
Before we begin to debunk the Law of Attraction, I want to quickly point out that your ears
aren't playing tricks on you – my intro music was different this time, and that's
because this video is a proud collaboration with the awesome deathcore band All Shall
Perish, who's lyrics consist of criticizing politics, ideologies and indeed religion.
Caysen and Matt both reached out to me and suggested that I take on, among other topics,
the Law of Attraction, and hence – I've now collaborated with a heavy metal band…
yeah, I bet you didn't see that coming… because I sure didn't!
If you're in to heavy music and haven't already checked them out, I invite you to

You won't regret it!
So, to get back on track, here's a syllogistic rendition of the Law of Attraction: The entire
universe is comprised of energy vibrating at different frequencies; the Law of Vibration.
In humans, these vibrations are responsible for both physical and mental states.
Humans can change the frequency of their vibrational energy through introspection, meditation and
diet.
Therefore, the Law of Attraction and the Law of Vibration are critical to human flourishing.
So the first thing to be said, in my opinion, is that the Law of Attraction, and, to be
blunt, New Age Thought altogether, is entirely predicated on dispensing meaningless drivel
masqueraded as profound truth and wisdom… it is, to paraphrase Michael Shermer, the
combination of scientific sounding words with New Age words to create the illusion that
they're somehow related…
Or to paraphrase Sam Harris, it is the attempt to equivocate the spooky and perplex aspects
of physics with new age intuitions; by subtly implying that because physics is spooky and
difficult to understand (but nevertheless truth), so must be New Age intuitions…
For example, the term 'Law of Attraction' deliberately implies that it is a scientific
law, just like the 'Law of Conservation of Energy' etc., and yet, science regards
the Law of Attraction as pure nonsense and pseudoscience, and puts it in the same bin
as creationism, homeopathy, climate change denial and tin foil hats!
Anyhow, with that said, the first question to be asked is if the first premise is true
- is everything really comprised of energy vibrating at different frequencies?
Is the Law of Vibration true?
Well, while it is true that everything so far appears to be an expression of matter
and energy, and while matter and energy are indeed different states of the same thing
(energy)... the only way someone can say that everything "vibrates" is by defining 'vibration'
to be "energy in motion" – which only serves to confuse people.
What's more is that if the proponents of this argument go a step further and assert
that we know for sure that everything is vibrating energy, they're actually committing an Argument
from Ignorance, because absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
To illustrate this through another example, there was once a time when Newton's laws
accurately described the motion of everything we encountered, but once our observations
expanded to the cosmos, Newton's laws no longer proved to be accurate… just as it
would've been a mistake, and an Argument from Ignorance, to assert that Newton's
laws could answer all questions of motion, it would be a mistake, and an Argument from
Ignorance, to assert that absolutely everything is energy before we at least know what absolutely
everything is.
So what about the second premise?
The assertion that these vibrations are responsible for the physical and mental states of humans
- is this premise valid?
Well, it depends, and this is where the flaws really start rearing their ugly heads…
If the proponents are using a definition of 'vibrational energy' that is, "energy
in motion", then yes, the physical and mental states of humans are the product of vibrations…
but so is everything else – making the premise meaningless and confusing.
And the same goes for the Physics definition of 'vibration'.
But if, on the other hand, the proponents are using a definition of 'vibrational energy'
that is, "the universal life force that exists in all living matter", then no, this
assertion is unproven.
And of course, if the proponents are using one definition of 'vibrational energy'
for some of their premises, and another definition of 'vibrational energy' for some of their
other premises, then they're actually committing an Equivocation Fallacy.
And while we're on the topic of Equivocation Fallacies, it's worth mentioning that some
proponents will additionally use a definition of 'vibrational energy' that is, "a
personal mental state or an emotional atmosphere that can be sensed"...
Hence, when it comes to debating the Law of Attraction, instead of dropkicking them in
frustration – why by the way I appreciate is the most natural response, force them,
politely, to give you their definition of the 'energy' and 'vibration'.
Then write their definition down on paper, place it upon the ground, and slam a giant
goalpost through it… because they will try to change it throughout your conversation.
A third flaw with many, but not all concepts of 'energy' and 'vibration', is that
they are untestable and irrefutable, and that because of this they commit an Unfalsifiable
Fallacy.
An Unfalsifiable Fallacy occurs when an asserted proposition cannot be disproven by any amount
of evidence, and yet the proponent insists that the proposition is true.
For example, if a proponent defines vibrational energy to mean "an intangible and undetectable
life force that exists in all living matter", then due to it being intangible and undetectable,
it can never by proven false…
This is the equivalent, to contrast it against just one other example, priests who claim
that they can turn wine into the blood of Jesus.
While we can test the liquid for chemical changes, the proponents of this assertion
can simply claim that the change is in "spirit" rather than chemical… and thus render the
claim untestable and irrefutable.
Now it's worth saying that many proponents claim to have 'special equipment' that
can measure the frequency of energy and vibrations", such as the V.I.B.E machine, but these machines
and techniques have never been proven to verifiably work… in fact, James Randi once issued a
very famous One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge, and despite thousands of people
taking the challenge, including many proponents of the Law of Attraction, none were successful.
And finally, as the last major flaw that I'll raise in this video, most proponents of the
Law of Attraction commit a devastating Anecdotal Fallacy.
They do this because their concepts, definitions, ideology and assertions are largely, and sometimes
entirely, predicated on their own personal experiences, interpretations, and testimony.
It's strange, but almost everybody acknowledges that humans can hallucinate, make mistakes,
and are subject to the placebo effect, but when it comes to "spiritual experiences"
a surprising number of people conveniently forget that they are subject to these facts,
and they so easily discard the anecdotal claims of contradicting experiences from other people…
Anecdotal evidence, coupled with the placebo effect, is a very powerful thing indeed.
So, the Law of Attraction is flawed because: It conflates real science with pseudoscience;
Most proponents commit an Argument from Ignorance; Most proponents commit an Equivocation Fallacy;
Most proponents commit an Unfalsifiable Fallacy: and; Most proponents commit an Anecdotal Fallacy.
Anyhow, I just want to once again thank All Shall Perish for reaching out to me, and I
