Join us today for a conversation on why
finding purpose and passion in our life
and career becomes even more important
after 50!
Hi and thanks for tuning back into
2nd act TV we're continuing our
conversation with Alise Cortez
about living your life to the fullest
after 50 and finding purpose and passion
in your work. Alise, welcome back to the
program thank you for having me and i
love the way you say my name
thank you! Oh good, I'm saying it right
aren't I? Yes, mam!
So, tell us about your personal story and
how you are in this transition of your
life
yes yeah for me it's a really fun story to
tell
I am 52 as of just a few weeks ago and
I'm loving my life and I have had the
most wonderful situations happen in that
I literally get you I think rewrite my
life story. About a year and a
quarter ago my husband let me know that
he wanted he wanted a divorce and I didn't
really know it was coming
wasn't my idea, but it was a good idea it was a
great idea and I really applaud him for
having the foresight awareness to be
able to recognize that the relationship
was finished and frankly the courage to
end it when so many people really don't
choose to do that. And I told him I
said when I moved out of the house
I said I left him a note and I said I
want to thank you for setting us both
free so we can each pursue the life that
we want
oh what a great, I love the way you just said
that, yes please continue
yeah it was really a gift and I really
appreciate how it all happened and
it set forth of course a tremendous
myriad of energy and requirements it
takes just to start a new life
again as an adult and as a
parent, and a lot of there's a lot of
stress involved and of course I'm
not going to say that it was all roses
and rainbows to get through the
transition
however what it yielded was this tremendous
beautiful open pasture of
opportunity, just a new way of being new
connections
and frankly getting to live the life, and
there aren't any there's no more
boundaries anymore, when you're
married person, when I was married
I felt like there are certain things that
you have to do, and live and be and do this
and there was, I lived in a small Corral
if you will, not by his impossition
just my own and once those
barriers were free
suddenly the world looked really like my
oyster like they're what else what don't
I want to do what can I do and really
looking at things from the lens of
possibility and what can be and frankly
just sheer delight just wow what else
out there? I've had so many people Silke
tell me, Alise, you know you have this
really wonderful lightness about you and
I think it's just because you I look at
the world the vantage point of
possibility opportunity and what
really cool thing is around the corner
and oftentimes I'm just amazing giddy
and when I find that I'm happy about it.
I love love love the way that you
described that, as a matter of fact I need to
introduce you to another guest on
our program Barry Gold who has a website
called Divorcedover50.com and there's
this phenomenon I'm sure you're familiar
with called Gray Divorce, and it's about the
baby boomers, are you familiar with, you've never
heard gray divorce?
oh my gosh, I'm teaching you
something I can't believe it
Gray Divorce is, has been coined as the
phenomenon of people baby boomers
getting divorced, one in four baby boomer
marriages are breaking up and I've
actually given a lot of coverage to that
one 2nd Act TV because that was me
and I've also gotten flak for talking
about it because it's like only
encouraging divorce because I too feel
that you know all of the sudden life is full
of opportunity so why is that you know?
You've really made our point is that it
doesn't have to be negative it can be
great for both people. No doubt about it and
it has been good for both of us for sure
so after your divorce how has life
changed and also you know we are
talking careers today and finding purpose
how's that changed for you?
Wow in so many ways
well first what I guess what I would
say is that it's just really a
mentality my mentality is so different
I really, I really
live from this place of gratitude now
everything I'm ungrateful for
everything that surround me every
encounter that I have with someone
in the airport, in a cafe or whatever
that is just magical and mystical, how did
that happen and it just infuses and
it's like an ongoing energy battery
if you will that keeps me recharged and
then I get to cascade that same energy
back out, so that is the base starter for
what's been different for me and I
frankly, I think it's just because I'm so
much happier in my life that's part of
it. I would just say that the intensification
of who I am as a human being started
showing up much more differently that
I could approach and better understand
and certainly better appreciate
adversity and overcoming adversity and
just frankly sadness and challenge that
I didn't really know how to process
before, so I just feel like it's been
this blossoming of person spirit
profession
ah it's it's really yummy!
I I mean I hear you, I'm sitting here
I'm just like smiling this is yes, you
know, it reaffirms decisions that
I have made, I'm sure a lot of our viewers
have made, and let's come back on another
segment and maybe talk some specifics in
terms of advice some you know some sort
of action steps to take
do's and don'ts even about you know
taking that step of finding purpose in
your work after 50. Thanks, we'll see you in a minute.
