[Ryan] Today we're going to talk about Airbnb and how their mobile app is turning the travel
industry on its back through design.
[MUSIC]
So today we're here with Mike who is really enthusiastic about Airbnb's new updates that
they've recently launched and Mike, take us through it.
What are some of these elements that you're talking about from a design standpoint that
are really making waves in the travel industry?
[Mike] So Airbnb has done a really good job of taking what is traditionally a booking
tool or a booking experience and kinda flipping that upside down and telling a little bit
of story and a little bit of introducing this aspect of discovery through the travel booking
experience.
It's easier for me to show you than talk about it so let me jump in here and pull this up.
Now, when you launch this for the first time, if you downloaded this to book a trip you're
gonna notice something right off the bat that's a little bit different is I don't see any
forms here.
I don't see any inputs here.
What am I supposed to be doing?
Well, it's kind of walking me through and introducing me to what this new experience
that we talked about is.
So, let's read here.
No Airbnb is more than just homes.
Hmm, what does that mean?
Book my whole trip all from one app - ok!?
Let's go!
So, as we get in here, traditionally if you're booking travel you kind of expect to see:
How many people?
Where am I going?
What's it going to cost?
Where am I going to fly to?
The difference here is Airbnb is using design, as simple and a user friendly design, to kind
of introduce not only destinations but introduce experiences that you might not have known
about.
[Ryan] What about those users that go into an app like this and they download the app,
they're familiar with Airbnb as a place to find a place to stay.
And they go into it and there's this whole new experience that comes up and it's kind
of like "AHHHH, what is this?
I want to get to what I want to get to!"
What about those users?
[Mike] So, what's nice about this is it encompasses both this high level picture of this bigger
story, but it also talks or allows the user to go ahead and make that traditional booking
experience happen.
It does it really really simply in terms of design.
We've got one field up here that we can tap in.
Currently it's telling us "Anywhere, anytime, one guest."
If we tap that we can click here and let's say we want to change where we're going to.
This time we are gonna go to...where do you want to go Ryan?
[Ryan] Uh, Paris.
[Mike] Paris, ok.
One click, change it...when do we wanna go?
Let's go...I heard Paris is great in March.
So let's go March 1st through 5th.
Save it.
And...it's gonna be me and you.
So another thing here is I'll just tap this once - BAM now we've got 2 people.
[Ryan] It's very simple and clean.
There's not a lot of stuff going on here.
[Mike] Yeah it's very simple and clean.
They've done a good job of getting rid of and in fact not showing you things that you
don't need to use.
They're only going to show you what you need to interact with at the time you need to interact
with it.
So it's very intuitive, it's very clean and it's very fast.
So, we've got out trip to Paris booked...
[Ryan] I can't wait!
[Mike] Yeah, it's gonna be great.
Just like that we have our kind of general experience outlined and now as we scroll down
we still get this high level experience, but now they're more catered to what's in Paris
at that time.
We have places we can stay in terms of homes.
If I click on one of these it's gonna really nicely make that transition from the little
thumbnail to the full screen experience.
So I get big photos of where I wanna stay.
I get all the information right off the bat.
Really clean design, really helpful to look at.
The reason this works so well is because again they're only going to show us the things that
we need to interact with.
We're gonna get in and out in less than a minute.
We're gonna see - we're gonna experience this.
On top of everything that we've done, this whole traditional experience has been flipped
and is now kind of a storytelling exercise and it allows us for a little bit of self
discovery in terms of where we wanna go.
[Ryan] It's very fluid too, which is nice.
Well Mike thank you so much for taking some time.
You just heard from an industry expert.
He's actually in the design field...uh, has been doing design for many many years.
I'm excited I've actually used Airbnb recently, we're going to be in Orlando for a business
trip in a few weeks and go Airbnb!
It's great to see how they're evolving and becoming more than just a place to book a
place to stay.
So Mike, thanks again.
As always we'll be back next week with our next video but for now, enjoy the rest of
your day!
