Hi I'm Lynn Kleinmeyer and I'm Maggie Pickett

And we are Digital Learning Consultants here at Grant Wood AEA

And we are so excited we are here for week two of our month-long celebration

Um last week Jonathan and Mindy came talking about Collaboration

And today Maggie and I are here to kick off the week-long celebration for Communication.

What is collaboration? You know when I think about collaboration

I think about how its this collective contribution to make something better than what was previously

possible when you're by yourself. It's that coming together to contribute and to really

create something new and different. Absolutely

How about you? Yeah whenever I think about collaboration

I think of that word synergy where you're looking at one plus one equals three. So greater

than the whole, right. Um just because of unique minds coming together and generating

bigger better ideas and things.... It's exciting. Really its something that um I don't think

any profession can live without, but especially educators its ... needed.

Absolutely, and those of you that have ever worked with me know that I have all sorts

of wonderful catch-phrases that kind of guide my life and one of the ideas that I love is

that idea that sharing is caring and um that the smartest person in the room, is the ROOM

and that we really do need to build off of eachother celebrating the amazing things we

come up with individually but then continuing to push back to contribute and to make things

even better. Absolutely. So in your previous roles prior

to Grant Wood how did you collaborate? Um I am super lucky because my entire educational

career I have had amazing partners-in-crime. Um I started my career as a seventh grade

reading teacher and I worked with an incredible group of seventh grade teachers, especially

my World History teacher, so shout-out to Curtis Goedke. Because he and I, our curriculum,

we would often do co-teaching um opportunities for the kids and so one of my favorite was

when we did Greek Mythology and um in my classroom we studied the Greek and Roman myths and then

in his classroom he studied the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome and so we always came together

and we had this huge project that we did where the two classes would combine and the kids

would research and they dug into really having how those myths contributed to the culture

and and how they coincided and it was so cool cause kids were able to create amazing things

and make amazing connections and it was so fun to build off of each other's expertise.

Absolutely. And then when I went I went to Louis Central

as a Teacher Librarian I mean it was incredible. As a Teacher Librarian I was able to collaborate

with everybody, yeah. And I was able to go out into classrooms and to help build off

of what they were already doing and continue to extend that learning for kids.

Awesome. What about you?

Well that's kind of as a speech-language pathologist which was my original role in education very

similar right. Um I had students that were in um could be in any classroom in a school

that I was serving. So being able to go in and co-teach and push-in um with a service

delivery model that offered that type of push-in support was really fantastic and so I got

to collaborate with not only special education teachers but also general education teachers,

and families. Um collaboration with families is essential, especially for students with

disabilities um that brings them into the fold and again everyone working together toward

the same common goal you get a lot more done um and see that gap close for those kids.

So um the one thing about being in special education was that it was literally impossible

to do my job without collaborating. I mean I could have, please don't get me wrong, but

the outcomes when you collaborate versus the outcomes you see when you don't, when you

stay isolated night and day different. So its really what's best for kids right.

Exactly. you know that idea of coming together to do something incredible for kids. That's

what this is all about. Absolutely. Yeah.

So you know as you've transitioned to the Digital Learning Team here kind of what is

collaboration for you in your current role? Yeah, so I transitioned to a consultant role

a few years ago, but in my current role as a Digital Learning Consultant we, again, are

very blessed to have an amazing team um here at Grant Wood A E A on the Digital Learning

team, but also just Grant Wood staff in general. Lynn and Ihave the unique opportunity to work

on a similar or the same project we're dubbing it like A B C focused on Accessibility, Branding

and ... (laughing) Creative Commons and that whole idea of content.

Yeah and what what... That's collaboration right there did you see

that. Thanks. Oh my gosh. Um so anyway that notion

of collaboration it would not this project if we were to be focused on some of these

things in isolation it wouldn't really make sense or the content or the project wouldn't

really live, right, it would just kind of flounder. But we've all the fact that we've

all come together and kind of offered alignment with these three initiatives has really offered

opportunity to take some of that work forward. Yeah its been absolutely incredible that whole

idea of working smarter not harder and really making some of those connections in order

to build off of each others strengths and thats one of the things I appreciate about

getting to work with different people they are so inspiring and so everyday challenging

yourself to take something to the next level and to build off of each others expertise

is incredible. I learn everyday.

Yes. Absolutely and its so wonderful to be able to have those partners-in-crime to be

able to turn to and you know constantly ask "Hey guys what do you think?" or "How might

I approach this particular problem" or you know its just wonderful to have that so.

Absolutely. um and I think that's why we talk about what it looks like at an agency but

I think the same thing holds true in a school when you're talking about kids. We can collaborate

here and make sure that that we're focused on a collective whole um and collective commitments

but what does that look like for kids in the classroom?

Yeah. And I think we're in an amazing place in our world right now where that ability

to connect and collaborate is truly global and so that idea that kids being able to take

their ideas and expand upon them and add in other peoples and get that push back and that

challenge of their thinking beyond just their own personal experiences and own personal

Four walls Yeah for walls and so it is absolutely exciting

and that was one of my favorite things to do as a Teacher Librarian is to help kids

connect and to really truly work to collectively build this new knowledge. It so excited

Exciting It's so exciting

So this week Lynn and I are going to bring to you the um some resources some ideas to

hopefully and some people to follow to hopefully feed this notion of collaboration and give

you some extra resources to think about. Yeah so definitely check it out and being

able or please continue to and we hope that you are able to collaborate with us um throughout

this week but also as we continue on to our actual celebration of Digital Learning Day

which is February 28th so until then we are looking forward to learning with you.
