Welcome to VRCBVI CABAT Tech Bytes.

I'm Mike Fish, technology instructor here at the Virginia Rehab Center for the Blind.

Uh, this series of videos is going to talk about how to navigate a touchscreen...

...on an Apple product, using the voice-over screen reader.

We have a series of four videos; the first will be ...

"What is voice-over and what is Siri?" What's the difference?

Video number two will be ...

"How do I turn on and off that annoying voice, called Voice Over?"

Number three, "Navigating, selecting, and closing applications".

And the fourth video will be, "How do I type on that touch screen when I can't see it?"

Join us as we dive through these tasks and many others ...

through our CABAT Tech Bytes tutorials.

Feel free to leave your comments on the Facebook page ...

...or send me an email at michael.fish@DBVI.virginia.gov

Oh, and if you'd like to catch all our videos in one spot, go to Facebook ...

International Signal?? Reaction video to the Response video by the Hidden Good - Duration: 17:17.

My name is Hina

What I am here to do

doing a reaction video

Have you already seen my previous videos?

The Hidden Good did a response video after our comments on the videos

with 1 Deaf individual

Disclaimer : I have nothing against the Deaf individual

Every Deaf individual have own experiences and own opinions

So...

hope you guys understand

I will be giving my own opinion

so let's go!

to clarify...

This guy

is a sign language interpreter

NOT a special agent

He will terp all the conversations between Deaf and Hearing.

I dont understand why you call him a special agent?

It's HIS JOB!

NOT a special job.

What is "international signal"??!

It happens to everyone!

Why do we need it?

give signal that we are Deaf

SOS - wave white flag

tbh, you wrote that life scene

it may never happen

but international signal * rolls eyes*

if it were me stuck in the lift,

and I cant communicate

if my phone has reception

I will probably message someone for help

dont forget we have a sms service for police

We are Singaporeans, we know Singapore.

We dont really need help

We have phone, Google Map

If we are talking about travelling overseas

yes.. for sure we will ask for help

We cant read

Japanese, Korean..

or German etc etc

Same for you guys

You will surely need help too

When you come back to Singapore, you dont need help right?

so why do we need help?

'Explain it slower'

when the person FIRST ask you to write

and you still insist on speaking

The person already told you his/her need

and you still ignore the request

I had one experience

where i went to Guardian

the pharmacy

where i asked for a certain medicine

the Pharmacist on duty

asked me something

I couldnt understand him

so I said I was Deaf and gestured him to write

He continued to speak

repeating over and over

his voice was getting louder and louder

I repeated myself, i said I cant hear, can you please write

He repeated again

I was so pissed off.

until I finally realized he was asking for ID

This is talking about school but when you are talking about the

challenges faced in Singapore

mainly captioning for mainstream TV, youtube etc.

educational videos in school

if there is no captions, how can we have access to information?

in school..

there will always be people with good hearts who is willing to help.

but...

not every time..

it's very hard

to get people to help you

when they are also busy.

next best thing would be

interpreters...

or provide access through captioned videos..

or note takers...

Overall

in the end we still have to rely on ourselves.

I didnt have terping throughout my schooling life.

nothing. that's it.

so..

when you see a Deaf friend having difficulty

If you can, pls support

but if you cant, it's fine too

but please throw away your stereotype of the Deaf community

'oh Deaf people cannot do anything.'

'poor thing...'

no.. please

your apology is accepted

but your video was not good enough

you did not address all the issues in the video

Secondly you said it was a work of fiction

But based on a experience of someone in the past

Any good author

would do proper research

and put basic correct information

why did the Blind person have no cane?

I want to talk about

the terping

on the video

They have adopted this 'correct' way where the Deaf is the focus and the terp is off screen

The problem is that

the Deaf was not facing the camera

the main person is the Deaf

not the interviewer

the Deaf person have no choice but to face sideway (where the terp is)

it makes the Deaf person look stupid on screen

if you want to do the proper way

move the terp behind the camera

so that the Deaf can face the camera and terp at the same time

It will look nicer

We can do anything

just that we DON'T hear

notice the word

'dont'

not 'Cant'

Because we dont hear means

for myself

I do hear certain sounds

but not everything.

like a hearing person

also..

when we say out our needs

specify our needs

''Can you write please?"

yet you refuse to listen to us

You are making us disabled.

You always talk about wanting to help the Deaf community

I would like to change to ''support"

'help' and 'support' are also different

when you talk about 'helping'

you are saying you are pitying us

'oh I wan to help the weaker ones'

another difference

support with your ability

even though you cant terp

or do not know sign language

you can support in so many other ways

for example

you can change your persepctive

'Deaf & Mute'

using the correct terminology

Listen to our needs

not making us follow your idea of a perfect society

'oh this person needs to be fixed'

'Must talk, Talk to me, I talk to you'

'LISTEN'

a word that the Deaf community deliberately use to make you understand

so many implications in that word

so what you can do ... is to..

Listen.

See you again!
