Last week I published a video titled:
How to draw like Kurzgesagt using only Paint.
And oh God.
The number of people that got trolled and believed that the video was real will make
you question the entirety of humankind.
I did NOT expect a joke to get that much attention.
So I'm going to share with you how I got that idea, what happened behind the scenes,
and many other things that I'll be talking over this timelapse.
It all started when I saw a "college humor" video one year ago; the video was about a
fake photoshop tutorial, I couldn't sleep at night thinking about that video.
I was AMAZED by how it was done, I wanted to do something similar, but I didn't know how.
So after some experiments, I figured a way to do it with my favorite programs, that's right
Illustrator and After Effects, I'm sure there must be a million different ways to
fake these kinds of things.
But this is the way I did it.
As you can see.
I started designing the buttons and the dialogue boxes that I need in Illustrator, and I was
very cautious because I wanted to make them look as real as possible.
So I used the exact same font and colors to make people believe that those illustrations
are part of the program.
Also, most of the time when you see the cursor moving.
There's actually no cursor; It's just an image of a cursor being moved to different
positions.
And as simple as this may sound, it actually worked.
The video has 71.000 views as I'm speaking.
Now let me tell you, this is such a massive achievement for a small channel like mine.
You'd be surprised by the sheer amount of people that believed that this was real.
But sadly it's not; maybe after 40 years from now, people are gonna watch that video
and say, he was right!
He was right all along.
I'm gonna be famous, and they would do interviews with me and ask me how did I know it.
I would tell, it's pretty basic stuff.
The animation process takes so much time.
But the more people get into this field; the more demand is gonna be for more efficient
ways to animate.
And with the rise of AI's, algorithms will help people animate much faster.
Until, eventually, robots doing entire animations from scratch and taking over this job also.
Overall, I was so proud of that video, and I'm happy that it got the attention that
it deserved.
Initially, I was gonna publish it as an April fools joke, but I couldn't wait any longer,
because the idea has been sitting in my mind for over a year.
Yes, an entire year.
As I said, I didn't know how can I fake a video that would let people question if
they're dreaming or not.
At first, I thought that you have to learn a certain programming language and redo the
whole program with the counterfeit options.
Yes, you could do that, but it would take a million years.
A much easier way would be to draw some fake buttons.
And toss them on top of a screenshot of the actual program.
And you're done.
So I hope I gave an idea of what happened behind the scenes.
Maybe, someday I will do a long, detailed tutorial, and give you the tricks that I use,
to animate, illustrate, narrate, ma..
.. much faster ;)
