Teleseict, Greece, video 2 - Duration: 5:07.
Our interdisciplinary team consists of a special education educator,
a psychologist and a social worker.
If a developmental disorder, such as the autism spectrum or a long speech delay is detected,
we address the child psychiatrist to a larger KEDDY (Centres of Differential Diagnosis, Diagnosis and Support)
Once parents address KEDDY, we ask for their opinions and medical reports or records of some of the child's developmental achievements.
We also ask for the health booklet where we often see the child's development
development focusing on the head circumference and whether all stages of psychomotor development have been properly followed.
Then after asking for an informal school assessment,
because the pupil's image is very important, we assess the child.
In pre-school-aged children, we do not use standardised tools,
we have only informal tools at our disposal
and we are more interested in the areas of cognitive and kinetic development.
Especially at preschool age, the diagnosis is descriptive referring to cognitive deficiencies,
or instances of ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), or elements that are identified within the spectrum of autism.
In such cases, we ask for a child psychiatrist's expertise, which determines the spectrum disorder.
The material is informal and we give the child time.
We usually recommend reassessment within a year time
to check if and to what extent the child's condition has improved.
Then, in the first two classes of primary school where the mechanisms of reading and writing are developed,
we focus more on the development of writing and reading and on the developmental functions.
In the upper classes we use standardized tools.
Our standardised tools can detect with great precision if a child has dyslexia
or mental disability, his/her intelligence index and the degree of his/her linguistic development.
We have linguistic tools, to which we have been trained by the Ministry of Education.
As far as pre-school age and first class of primary school are concerned,
we keep the child engaged all together for about 2 hours because we do not want him/her to get too tired.
As the child becomes older, the appointment with each specialist lasts for one hour and a half.
After all specialists collect their data out of the child's observation, we write a report and fill in a form
that shows some areas in need of control.
Then, we have an interdisciplinary meeting/discussion once a week. We talk about the incident,
everyone gives their point of view on the range of the diagnostic category
and what the child's needs and abilities are.
Then, we reach a decision unanimously or at least, a dominant opinion is expressed,
always taking into account the information from the social background.
We give parents the report and in turn, they inform the school authorities.
Of course, there are parents who may not wish to hand in the report.
These are cases of parents who do not accept the problem, not because they do not see their child's weaknesses
but because our society is not very open to differentiation.
Parents are given time, especially those with children in the upper classes who find it difficult to cope.
Many times, although a child coming here may go to the fifth or sixth class of Primary school
and he/she may be in the autism spectrum,
nothing has been understood by the family for so many years or the school context.
So we give parents time as well as a descriptive opinion without alleging that it is about an autism spectrum.
We inform the parents respectively and we arrange a first, a second and a third appointment.
They are given a support program at KEDDY,
but it is usually inadequate because of the lack of staff.
Most of the time, the small centers in the province are staffed with substitute temporary staff
who are employed only for a few months and they are asked to do the diagnosis.
So, the support falls behind and there is no other choice
but to address either public or private institutions for support.
