Welcome to Health Tips Monday my name is Dr. B.
Today I'll be speaking on a topic called stress and its impact to the body.
Prior to starting I want to encourage you to
drop your discussion ideas in the discussion section, for example you; You have an
underlying health issue that you will like me to talk more about or you've read
something online, or you known a friend of yours that has an underlying health condition
and you just one more explanation or more discussion about it or more awareness to it,
just drop it there and what I'll do is, each week I'll go through the post and pick the
first few topics and incorporate them in my videos.
Alright so let's start.
The adrenal gland is a small gland the sits on the upper portion or the
upper pole of the kidney it primarily has two sections; the inner portion also known
as the medulla and the outer portion also known as the cortex.
The cortex is actually the largest portion of the adrenal gland the medulla primarily
secrets hormones responsible for how the body reacts to stress.
These hormones are the adrenaline and noradrenaline while the outer portion secrets glucocorticoids,
a stress hormone known as cortisol, mineralocorticoids
(aldosterone) which regulates how the kidney regulates sodium absorption and sex hormones.
In this section I'll be speaking on cortisol and aldosterone.
Stress hormone called cortisol also a glucocorticoid.
Cortisol is very very important.
It is produced by the body to help you feel energized, to help you adapt
to stress and its function is also partly regulated by a very important vitamin for
vitamin b5, it helps it in breaking down or converting the food substances that we eat
such as; protein carbs and fatty meals into energy particularly fatty meals.
So when you notice you feel a lot of fatigue or you feel
tired after eating a meal so rich in fat, you should think of the possibility, possible
deficiency in vitamin b5 because it's very important it's it's very important in the
function of cortisol in regulating the function of cortisol to help you generate a lot of
energy another mineral that is important when someone is really stressed out and the adrenal
gland is suppressed, is sodium.
what happens aldosterone is suppressed because produce also by the adrenal gland and that
causes low sodium.
so, what happens is you start feeling the need to take a lot of salty meals, the need
to drink a lot of water, you feel tired, you feel some muscle twitches also.
When the gland doesn't function properly as seen with stress, another electrolyte that
is affected is potassium alongside with this, is a mineral called calcium.
however, I'm going to be focusing primarily on sodium for now.
sodium does function to help regulate blood pressure and blood volume, it also helps to
facilitate muscle contraction and finally it does help to make sure the nerves are working
properly.
when sodium is low what happens is, blood pressure is not properly regulated to the
patient develops low blood pressure muscle contraction is impaired, the nerves do not
function properly also, so it's important for you to note these
symptoms and signs so that when they occur you can easily identify sodium as a possible
electrolyte imbalance.
it is also important for you to know that when you're stressed and the adrenal gland
is affected the body tends to generate energy from other sources.
there is a breakdown of muscle, so what happens is the muscle that the body you know, goes
after are the big muscles for example; quadriceps, the muscles in your thighs or the big muscles
in your gluteal region (buttocks) which is the gluteus Maximus.
so those muscles are broken down, and the functions of those muscles becomes affected.
So you start feeling fatigued, difficulty rising from a sitting position because the
function of those quadriceps is actually meant to help you with those activities, physical
activities.
It is also shown that emotional stress affects the adrenal glands even more than physical
stress.
So if you know someone going through an emotional trauma, probably a loss of someone,
or a loss of a pet or some something close to the person, there is a possibility they
feel a certain way, or feel any of these symptoms.
so, it is important for you to know how to regulate your stress level, try to break down
your work-load today is Monday, probably have a lot of things to do, try to manage your
stress level because it does have some impact on your body particularly your adrenals.
so guys, that will be all for today.
Thank you for listening.
