Hey everyone! My name is Kristin Andersen and I'm going to be your
instructor for COMM 1500 online this summer session. I'm really excited, I
hope you are too. I wanted to give you a little bit of
background information, just so you can kinda get to know me a little better
I'll just hit the highlights, I want to keep it short for you. So, I'm currently a PhD
student in the Department of Communication Studies. I'm also an
instructor, so I research and I teach as I'm going through the program. I have a year
left, I'm working on my dissertation (I'm so excited that I'm almost done!)
and I've taught COMM 1500 for the last five years, so I'm kind of a vet of the
process at this point. However, this is my first time kind of going into the online
world so that might be why I seem a little bit uncomfortable in front of the
camera. I don't really like this that much. I'll get used to it though and very
quickly I'm sure. In any case, I'm really excited to be going through this class
with you and I can't wait to get to know you all a little bit better. Uh, let's see my
research interests ...I study a lot of different things, I'm a little all over
the place in that regard. I study conflict in families, and
aggression in romantic relationships, and how we talk about weight and
appearance in our families and peer relationships, as well as my -- the focus of
my dissertation is on stigma. Stigma specifically regarding weight, so how we
stereotype or enact prejudice or discrimination against people based on
their weight, their size, their body shape, umm the kinds of eating, uh, behaviors that they
engage in or exercise behavior, so it can be anorexia, bulimia, being overweight or,
or being thin, for that matter -- like really it just is all about that-- in that
kind of realm. So, if you have questions about any of those things I'd be happy
to talk to you about it. You can go ahead and private message me, or email me, or we
can have a discussion about it during class. Let me see. What else? Oh I am originally from
Orange County, California -- uh, specifically Santa Ana -- and I'm actually here right
now so I'm going to hopefully not mess this up. I want to show you
the outside, it's pretty awesome, I want to make you jealous.
It's 75 and sunny right now, it's really beautiful, so I'm pretty happy to be home.
And really I'm mostly just happy to be home to hang out with my family a little
bit. I only get to go home twice a year so it's been nice. If my dog comes around
here I'll show you picture him -- he is just the cutest. Oh, I think I start this
video with a picture of him actually, so you might have already seen him. Uh, his name is
Kit, so hopefully I get him, but until that happens... um, let me tell you: I did my
undergrad at Chapman University, it's a small liberal arts college in Orange
County, and then I moved to Athens to go to UGA for my masters and for my
PhD so I've been there for, for quite a while now. I'm looking to get out of the
state and try something new after this, but it's been a wonderful five years so
far and I'm hoping for a great sixth year at UGA. Uh, I will be traveling to Italy
for the first two weeks, so I'm very excited, but what's more important to you
all is that I will be a little bit more difficult to reach during those first
two weeks -- so from the 5th through the 19th. I'm going to do my best to be
online as much as possible, to get your emails answered as quickly as possible,
but I do ask for a little bit of patience. I'm going to do my best, but
there might be a day where I can't answer within a few hours, it might take
till the end of the day for that -- uh, at certain points. But I gotta say, I am
stoked, it's going to be great. Umm, I can't wait to actually
meet you, I know that sounds weird online, but to meet you and to hear a little bit
about you, and I just hope you're having a great day and a great weekend. And I'm
ready to get this show on the road! So I'm sure I'll hear from you soon. Oh wait,
before we go, let's see if I can get my dog, hold on, 'cause I'm not gonna lie,
he's- he's pretty cute. Let me see... (calls: Come here Kit -- come here
Come say hi) ...hopefully you can see him! He's -he's a little tired. He's been napping.
Anyway, I love animals, so feel free to post pictures or videos at any time
really. So, anyway, hope you're having a great day -- bye!
