Waching daily May 5 2017

Hey everybody!

Welcome back to Tanner's Books and Beyond, here today with my April Wrap-Up, which I'm

actually excited to do because I managed to read more than one book this month!

Mind you it probably helps that most of those books were fairly short...and I had already

started one before the month happened AAAA IT STILL COUNTS!

Before I begin I'm just gonna say that all my reviews for these books are available on

Goodreads, so this is basically just gonna be a very quick summarization of my thoughts

on each of these books.

So let's get the ball rolling with The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.

It was the first book I read this month; I also borrowed it from my friend Lindsay and

I've already given it back so that's why I don't have a physical copy.

This book tells the story of three different generations of historians and their allies.

We've got the unnamed female protagonist who narrates most of the story, we've also got

her father Paul and his wife Helen, and then we've got their mentor Professor Rossi.

Each of their stories take place in different decades, we've got the 30s and the 50s and

finally the 70s, so across a very wide swath of history, especially considering that most

of the action takes place in Europe so we've got all that Cold War stuff going on back there.

And over the course of their studies they discover this trail of clues and evidence

suggesting maybe, possibly, Vlad Tepes, the guy who was the Romanian Tyrant and the inspiration

for Dracula from Bram Stoker's novel, he may have actually become Dracula, become a vampire

and has survived to this day.

And then what follows is this adventure throughout Europe of them tracing down all of these clues

and hints and evading the followers that they eventually realize "oh yeah, vampires are

real, they keep on trying to bite us and kill us."

It's a great book if you love history, it's a great book if you love doing research.

I mean I for one when I was in university loved doing research for essays.

Now the actual writing of the essays, that was a huge struggle, but when I was doing

research for them I really did enjoy it and so I really did enjoy a lot of the stuff that

the characters in the book had to got through.

Now there are some qualms I had with it - some of the syntax and the grammar and just the

style I found kind of iffy, and because I'm not as huge a history buff as my friend is,

there were some parts that really dragged.

But all in all it was a very well written book, it's a great adventure, it's a good

historical drama, and there are even some really good horror elements in there too.

And after that I read Power Rangers Aftershock, which is the graphic novel sequel to the new

movie, which is the greatest movie that I have ever seen, quantifiably the most diverse

film that has been released this year so you should definitely go watch it if you can,

and then if you can watch it again after that you should go watch it again!

So anyways, this book picks up directly after the film and continues most of the ranger's

stories and follows their hopes and fears about their duties and everything that that entails.

It's got some hints on where the sequel movies can go beyond the obvious, and I really hope

the sequel movies get greenlit - Don't let me down Lionsgate!

The one thing I didn't like about this is that it's really not a full graphic novel.

It's basically three issues - maybe not even three issues, maybe just two and a half issues

worth of single-issue material, and then the back half of this is just a preview of the

Boom series Mighty Morphin' comics because the Trade Paper Back is coming out soon.

So it's like they're good, but I already read those years ago, so I was basically paying

twice the amount for half of what I expected essentially.

Still though, if you really liked the movie you should definitely check this out.

It is a very good follow-up to the movie and it'll still show your support towards the

movie and put more evidence to the fact that they should continue with this film franchise.

And after I finished those I read The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi.

Now if you remember this is the book that I was planning on reading for DiverseAThon

back in January.

I got a hundred pages in and I was just not feeling it at all you guys.

I felt like there were some weird things going on with the pacing and the writing style and

the characters, and I knew that if I tried to force my way through it I was going to

lose all my motivation, so I put it on hold and I started reading the other stuff.

Didn't get as far as I wanted to for DiverseAThon, but I did get farther than I would have if

I read this book - and for good reason! Those fears were completely founded.

The only reason I was able to finish this as quick as I did was because A) I was in

some very long car trips over the weekend and B)

I'm almost out of data on my phone so it's like...I couldn't use the internet on those

trips so I had to do something.

So yeah I ripped through this and it's...it's not awful...but there's a lot of stuff that

I took umbrage with.

I felt the pacing was all over, the characters were all over; there's a good story buried

in here somewhere!

I think the main thing was that it felt way too rushed.

If you have a really strong hankering for Indian mythology inspired stories then maybe

you should check this out, but I really don't think it's worth your time if you don't have

such a huge passion for that.

And the last book I was able to squeeze in was Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood,

which is the first book in the Phryne Fisher series which of course is the inspiration for the...Phenomenal

television series Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

I watched the show, or at least the first season, before I read any of these books and

I wanted to start reading them to see how they compared.

For those who don't know, the plot of the show and the books is that it takes place

in 1920s Melbourne, Australia.

It's about a Lady Detective named Phryne Fisher and she's a really unique character of the

time just because she bucks all the social trends.

She takes a lot of male lovers, she's very accommodating of people of different religions

and races, she's super accepting of people who aren't straight even though that was basically

illegal at the time but she's still Super chill with it.

She's always supporting the needy and the downtrodden because in her backstory she was

born into poverty and the only reason her family is as wealthy as it is is because during

the Great War so many people died.

While I would say that the show in general is slightly better than the novel, the novel

itself has few things that give it a bit of an edge over the show in some departments.

Basically they're both really good.

Whether you're a fan of the television show or not you should definitely check this out

if you like mysteries or historical dramas or really strong female characters.

So that was my April, I think it was pretty successful.

I mean if you've been watching my previous videos I've probably talked about how

I've been really struggling to keep my motivation up these past few months, but I think reading

all those smaller books really helped.

So my plan now in order to keep that going is that on my queue shelf I've split up the

really thick books that I've got with smaller books between, so it's like after I read some

daunting 500, 600 page monstrosity I can read just some little 200-300 page thing or a graphic

novel that I can whip through in an hour or two, and that'll be able to keep the ball

rolling for me.

I'd also like to take this time to remind y'all that I am doing the bookshelf scavenger hunt.

I have been asking for coordinates for the past few videos.

I don't want to be too annoying but I haven't actually gotten that many coordinates sent

to me, so I'm really hoping you guys that you can send me a few.

I only need like five more and then I should be able to make a decent video for it, and

if I don't get them I'll probably just submit myself to a random number generator.

And if you wanna be in the loop and know when I bring that video out you should definitely

check me out on social media.

I have a goodreads as I mentioned, I've also got an Instagram and a Tumblr where I post

all my videos as well as some other Bookish stuff I've got going on, and as always you

can definitely like, share, and subscribe to my channel - and Definitely subscribe to

my channel because then, you might be my 100th subscriber, because I am sitting at 99...I

think I've been sitting at 99 for about a week now, but I'm - I'm so close and I...

I don't actually know what happens when you hit 100 subscribers, I think YouTube just

mails you a party hat and a chocolate bar, but it'd still be a really cool thing to happen,

so definitely subscribe if you like my stuff.

And until next time, I'll see you all *snap* later!

The Science Behind Mac Cannons - Duration: 3:20.

Hello, Rickey here and a few weeks ago me and a friend, who happens to be the lore master

over at Halo follower yes that Halo Follower, were discussing the science behind some of

the lore from Halo, because you know, he's the lore master.

He offered to write me a script for this video as he had done the prior research and I'm

just too much of an idiot to research it myself.

Now a question I had asked him is How do Mac Guns work.

You know those giant guns you see all the time in Halo?

He replied with its not too simple, but at the same time not too complicated.

Mac guns are some of the most powerful human made weapons.

They fire a heavy projectile with electro magnets and a greatly powerful electrical

current that runs through them.

Their real world counterpart Rail Guns are being tested by the US military in closed

conditions but are planning on field tests later this year with mounted rail guns on

naval ships.

Mounted guns . . . on Naval ships . . . Mac Cannons . . . we're all going to die.

How a rail gun works is a basic science lesson.

You take a slap of heavy metals, run electric currents along two long rails with coiled

wires covering them, as the charge builds so does the strength of the electromagnetic

forces created.

These forces then accelerate the metal to extremely high speeds and when the round exits

the barrel, it will be devastating to the target it hits, theoretically at least.

Mac Guns run under the same context to a degree.

Macs have various Magnetic Buffers along its barrel, each electro magnet section more powerful

than the last.

The term Mac Cannon, or Mac gun is redundant because Mac is an acronym for Magnetic Accelerator

Cannon.

There are three types of Macs in the Halo Universe, Ship Board Macs, Mac defense Platforms,

and the Mass Driver seen at the end of Halo: Reach and seen aboard the UNSC Infinity in

Halo 4.

Each one has strengths and weaknesses, and each are devastating weapons.

We wont go into specifics of each type, because size is the main factor between the three.

If we were to build a mac gun here on earth, in our time, we might produce enough electricity

to fire a single round, but it would fry our entire electrical grid, possibly the entire

planets'.

Now with that we don't have anything else to add onto this video, so if your still here

you've succesfully reached the end of a rather short video!

Good for you!

Anyways, this script was done by a close friend of the entire Halo Collective who just so

happens to work over at Halo Follower.

We're extremely happy he allowed us to make this video and we hope to do more like this

in the future!

If you enjoyed this kind of thing, whether it be the collaboration, or just the sake

of us attempting a science video.

Let us know in the comments below!

Also be sure to subscribe to stay up to date on anything and everything Halo!

How Does the Bible Apply to Me? - Duration: 28:33.

ANNOUNCER: THE FOLLOWING PROGRAM IS PAID FOR

BY THE FRIENDS AND PARTNERS OF JOYCE MEYER MINISTRIES.

JOYCE: WHEN I SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD, IT'S NOT ME BUT THE WORD

OF GOD THAT PEOPLE ARE HEALED PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY,

EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY, FINANCIALLY, SOCIALLY, AND IN

EVERY WAY THAT THEY CAN.

GINGER: AS WE WALK THROUGH EACH NEW DAY, WE ALL HAVE

QUESTIONS.

THEY'RE JUST PART OF LIFE, BUT DID YOU KNOW THERE ARE ANSWERS

FOR YOU?

GOD SAYS WHEN WE LOOK, WE'LL FIND HIM.

HE'S NOT TRYING TO HIDE ANYTHING.

SO, TOGETHER, WE ARE DISCOVERING LIFE'S EVERYDAY ANSWERS.

GINGER: WELCOME TO EVERYDAY ANSWERS.

IF YOU ARE READY, IF YOU THINK YOU CAN HANDLE IT, I'M GOING TO

SHARE WITH YOU THE SECRET TO ALL THINGS, THE SOURCE OF ANSWERS TO

ALL OF LIFE'S QUESTIONS, NO JOKE.

THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE PAGES OF

ONE BOOK AND IT'S THE BIBLE.

SO, HOW DOES THE BIBLE APPLY TO YOU?

WELL, JOYCE WILL SHARE THE DETAILS TODAY AND SOME OF YOU

WILL TELL US HOW IT'S WORKED IN APPLICATION IN YOUR LIFE

GETTING PRACTICAL AND SEEING RESULTS.

JOYCE: THE WORD OF GOD HAS POWER IN IT.

THE WORDS THAT WE'RE SPEAKING WHEN WE SPEAK GOD'S WORD,

THEY'RE NOT JUST ORDINARY WORDS, BUT GOD'S WORD HAS POWER

INHERENT IN IT, THAT MEANS IT COMES WITH LITTLE POWER BULLETS

THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO CHANGE OUR LIVES.

AND SO, WE'RE GONNA START FIRST BY TALKING ABOUT THE CREATIVE

POWER OF THE WORD OF GOD.

GENESIS 1:3, "AND GOD SAID--" ISN'T IT AMAZING THAT THE BIBLE

STARTS OUT WITH GOD SAYING SOMETHING?

AND THE GOOD THING IS WHAT HE SAID CAME TO PASS.

"AND GOD SAID, 'LET THERE BE LIGHT;' AND THERE WAS LIGHT."

WORDS CONTAIN POWER JUST LIKE THIS GLASS HAS WATER IN IT,

WORDS HAVE SOMETHING IN IT AND IF THE WORDS ARE GOD'S WORD,

THEY'RE FULL OF CREATIVE POWER.

IF THEY'RE NONSENSE WORDS, OR USELESS WORDS, OR VAIN WORDS,

OR EVIL WORDS, THEN THEY'RE ALSO FULL OF POWER BUT THEY'RE FULL

OF DESTRUCTIVE POWER.

WE ALL KNOW THAT IF PEOPLE SAY RIGHT WORDS TO US, IT CAN JUST

DO WONDERFUL THINGS ON THE INSIDE OF US AND IF THEY SAY

WRONG WORDS TO US, IT CAN BE CRUSHING AND SOMETIMES START

A WHOLE LIFETIME FULL OF DEVASTATION.

SO, WORDS HAVE POWER AND GOD HAS GIVEN US HIS WORD, AND HE WANTS

US TO BELIEVE THE WORD, TO MEDITATE ON THE WORD,

AND TO SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD.

THERE'S NOTHING THAT CAN BE ANY MORE IMPORTANT TO US IN OUR WALK

WITH GOD THAN LEARNING HOW TO SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD OUT LOUD

OUT OF OUR OWN MOUTH BECAUSE ANGELS, NOW LISTEN TO THIS,

ANGELS HARKEN TO THE WORD OF GOD.

THEY DON'T LISTEN TO MY COMPLAINING, THEY DON'T LISTEN

TO YOUR COMPLAINING, THEY'RE NOT MOVED BY OUR GRUMBLING, BUT THEY

ARE MOVED TO ACTION ON OUR BEHALF WHEN THEY HEAR

THE WORD OF GOD.

THE WORD GOD IS THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT.

IT IS A WEAPON AGAINST FORCES OF DARKNESS.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: "LET HIM WHO HAS MY WORD SPEAK MY WORD FAITHFULLY."

ISAIAH 55:10 AND 11.

"FOR AS THE RAIN AND SNOW COME DOWN FROM HEAVEN, AND RETURN NOT

THERE AGAIN, BUT WATER THE EARTH AND MAKE IT BRING FORTH AND

SPROUT, THAT IT MIGHT GIVE SEED TO THE SOWER AND BREAD TO

THE EATER--" NOW, LET'S THINK.

LET'S DON'T JUST READ, LET'S THINK.

RAIN COMES DOWN FROM HEAVEN AND IT DOESN'T GO BACK UP.

IT COMES DOWN AND IT DOES SOMETHING.

IT WATERS THE SEED THAT'S IN THE GROUND AND WE GET A HARVEST.

SO, WE GOT A WORD PICTURE FIRST HERE.

"SO SHALL MY WORD BE," THIS IS GOD SPEAKING TO US THROUGH

THE PROPHET.

"SO SHALL MY WORD BE THAT GOES FORTH OUT OF MY MOUTH: IT SHALL

NOT RETURN TO ME VOID [WITHOUT PRODUCING ANY EFFECT,

OR USELESS], BUT IT SHALL ACCOMPLISH THAT WHICH I PLEASE

AND PURPOSE, AND IT SHALL PROSPER IN THE THING FOR

WHICH I SENT IT."

SO, GOD IS SAYING, "WHEN MY WORD IS SPOKEN, SOMETHING IS GONNA

HAPPEN."

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN HERE AS THE WORD IS PREACHED.

DO YOU KNOW THAT PSALM 107:20 SAYS, "HE SENDS HIS WORD AND HE

HEALS THEM AND DELIVERS THEM FROM THE PIT AND FROM

DESTRUCTION."

AND I TELL YA WHAT, I HAVE HAD MY FAITH OUT FOR YEARS ON THAT

SCRIPTURE THAT WHEN I SPEAK THE WORD OF GOD,

IT'S NOT ME, BUT THE WORD OF GOD, THAT PEOPLE ARE

HEALED PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY,

FINANCIALLY, SOCIALLY, AND IN EVERY WAY THAT THEY CAN.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: AND I BELIEVE THAT AND I THINK THAT I'VE GOT MY PART

RIGHT, AND I WANT TO TALK TO YOU TODAY ABOUT BEING

A BETTER RECEIVER.

WHEN YOU GO TO CHURCH, DON'T EVER THINK YOU'RE JUST GOING TO

PUT YOUR TIME IN.

GO EXPECTING.

"I'M EXCITED TO HEAR THE WORD.

WHEN I HEAR THE WORD TODAY, SOMETHING IS GONNA BE RELEASED

IN MY LIFE.

SOMETHING GOOD IS GONNA HAPPEN IN ME.

I'M GONNA CHANGE.

CIRCUMSTANCES ARE GONNA CHANGE."

AND GO IN AND BE ATTENTIVE LIKE IT IS THE MOST AWESOME THING

THAT YOU COULD EVER HEAR IN YOUR LIFE.

LET'S HAVE A GREATER RESPECT FOR THE WORD OF GOD AND GOD IS GONNA

DO GREATER THINGS IN OUR LIVES.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: THE WORD THAT GOES FORTH OUT OF MY MOUTH.

NOW, I'VE KIND OF DECIDED THAT IF MY MOUTH IS HIS MOUTH, THEN

THE WORD THAT GOES FORTH OUT OF MY MOUTH WILL HAVE THE SAME

EFFECT AS WHAT'S TALKING ABOUT HERE IN ISAIAH 55.

SO, I BELIEVE WHEN WE CONFESS THE WORD OF GOD OUT OF OUR

MOUTHS, DON'T LOOK AT YOUR KIDS AND SAY, "YOU ARE NEVER GONNA

CHANGE."

DON'T EVER LOOK AT ANYBODY AND SAY, "YOU ARE NEVER GONNA

CHANGE."

THAT IS THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD THAT YOU CAN DO

TO SOMEBODY.

DON'T SIT AT LUNCH WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND SAY, "MY HUSBAND'S

NEVER GONNA CHANGE.

MY KIDS ARE NEVER GONNA CHANGE."

WHAT YOU NEED TO SAY IS, "I'M PRAYING FOR THEM AND I BELIEVE

THAT GOD IS WORKING RIGHT NOW IN THEIR LIVES."

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: YOU KNOW WHAT?

IT DOES US NO GOOD AT ALL TO SIT IN SERVICE AFTER SERVICE AND

HAVE SHELVES FULL OF CHRISTIAN BOOKS AND ALL THESE THINGS THAT

WE HAVE IF WE'RE NOT GOING TO STICK WITH THE WORD IN HARD

TIMES AND HOLD FAST OUR CONFESSION OF FAITH WHEN THINGS

LOOK LIKE IT'S NEVER GOING TO CHANGE.

BUT LET ME TELL YA SOMETHING, YOUR MIRACLE MAY BE RIGHT AROUND

THE CORNER AND THE DEVIL WANTS NOTHING MORE THAN FOR YOU

TO GIVE UP.

WHEN GOD'S WORD IS SPOKEN, IT PRODUCES AN EFFECT,

SOMETHING HAPPENS.

IT CONVICTS.

IT CONVINCES.

IT ENCOURAGES.

IT SAVES.

SIX HUNDRED AND TWENTY-TWO PEOPLE GAVE THEIR LIFE

TO THE LORD LAST NIGHT.

SOMETHING HAPPENED.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: EVERYBODY SAY, "SOMETHING'S HAPPENING IN HERE."

AUDIENCE: "SOMETHING'S HAPPENING IN HERE."

[MUSIC]

FEMALE: WE RECENTLY, ON DECEMBER 22, 2015 EXPERIENCED

THE LOSS OF OUR 23-YEAR-OLD SON JOSIAH AND GOD'S WORD HAS JUST

KEPT US STRONG.

MALE: IT HAS CHANGED HOW I FEEL ABOUT MYSELF.

IT HAS CHANGED IT'S LIKE I KNOW THAT I AM A LIGHT IN THE WORLD

AND I KNOW THAT I AM STRONG.

I'M A CONQUEROR AND I'M VICTORIOUS NO MATTER WHAT IT

SEEMS LIKE.

FEMALE: I'M AN OVERCOMER BECAUSE THE WORD SAYS I AM.

I AM LOVED BECAUSE THE WORD SAYS I AM AND I JUST--IT JUST TAUGHT

ME TO STAND ON GOD'S WORD 'CAUSE IT'S TRUTH.

FEMALE: WHEN YOU ARE IN SUCH A SITUATION LIKE OUR FAMILY IS

GOING THROUGH, YOU HAVE TO GO TO THE WORD, THAT'S YOUR ONLY

PEACE.

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT ANY OTHER WAY.

FEMALE: IT JUST SPEAKS TO YOU AND IT GIVES YOU THE STRENGTH,

AND THE PEACE, AND THE JOY, AND THE COMFORT, AND THE DIRECTION

THAT YOU NEED FOR THAT DAY.

FEMALE: I HAVE HOPE.

MY WAY OF THINKING HAS CHANGED.

I'M NO LONGER THE VICTIM.

FEMALE: WE'RE STILL GRIEVING BUT GOD IS THERE.

HE NEVER FORSAKES US AND HASN'T AND WE KNOW HE WON'T.

FEMALE: I'VE NEVER FELT MORE COMFORTED AND ENCOURAGED

UNLESS I HAVE BEEN READING HIS WORD, SO

I'M VERY THANKFUL FOR THE WORD OF GOD AND IT'S ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

THE WHOLE BIBLE IS ABSOLUTELY TRUE.

JOYCE: JAMES 1:21, "SO GET RID OF ALL UNCLEANNESS AND THE

RAMPANT OUTGROWTH OF WICKEDNESS, AND IN A HUMBLE

(GENTLE, MODEST) SPIRIT--" NOW, HERE WE GO.

THIS IS HOW WE'RE GONNA RECEIVE THE WORD.

"AND IN A HUMBLE (GENTLE, MODEST) SPIRIT RECEIVE AND

WELCOME THE WORD WHICH IMPLANTED AND ROOTED [IN YOUR HEART],"

I LOVE THIS.

NOW, GET THIS, "CONTAINS THE POWER TO SAVE YOUR SOUL."

NOW, AS BELIEVERS WE'RE ALREADY BORN AGAIN.

OUR SPIRIT IS ALREADY IN GOOD CONDITION.

GOD LIVES IN THERE.

HOLINESS IS IN THERE.

SANCTIFICATION'S IN THERE.

THERE'S ALL KINDS OF GOOD THINGS IN THERE BUT OUR SOUL IS STILL

A MESS.

I'M TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE'RE INITIALLY BORN AGAIN.

SO, I CAN BE JUST AS SAVED AS I CAN BE AND STILL HAVE BAD

ATTITUDES, AND BITTERNESS, AND RESENTMENT, AND UNFORGIVENESS.

YOUR SOUL IS YOUR MIND, YOUR WILL, AND YOUR EMOTIONS AND IT

NEEDS TO BE SAVED AND THAT HAPPENS THROUGH A PROCESS

CALLED SANCTIFICATION.

WE ARE MADE HOLY IN GOD THROUGH CHRIST BUT THE HOLY SPIRIT THEN

COMES TO GRADUALLY, LITTLE BY LITTLE, BY USING THE WORD OF

GOD, WORK THAT OUT IN OUR LIVES AND AS OUR MIND IS RENEWED

AND OUR ATTITUDE IMPROVES, WE CHANGE

AND THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN WITHOUT MEGADOSES OF GOD'S WORD.

BUT NOW WATCH THIS, HERE'S WHAT I LOVE.

LET'S GO BACK TO JAMES 1:21, "SO GET RID OF ALL UNCLEANNESS

AND THE RAMPANT OUTGROWTH OF WICKEDNESS, AND IN A--"

NOW, WHAT KIND OF ATTITUDE DO WE COMMONLY RECEIVE?

AND IN A HUMBLE, IN OTHER WORDS, "I NEED THIS.

I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU'RE PREACHING ON TODAY.

I NEED THIS."

WE NEED IT ALL.

THERE'S NONE OF IT WE DON'T NEED.

AND I DON'T CARE HOW MANY TIMES YOU HAVE IT UNDERLINED IN YOUR

BIBLE, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU DON'T NEED IT.

EVEN IF WE'RE--GOTTEN PRETTY GOOD AT DOING IT, WE STILL NEED

IT BECAUSE WE HAVE TO BE REFRESHED AND REMINDED OVER

AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

SO, LET'S HAVE THE ATTITUDE, YOU KNOW, PEOPLE SAY, "WHAT ARE

YOU GONNA PREACH ON?" IT DON'T MATTER WHAT I'M GONNA

PREACH ON, YOU NEED IT.

IN A HUMBLE, GENTLE, MODEST SPIRIT, RECEIVE AND WELCOME.

"I NEED THIS.

I NEED THIS."

WELCOME THE WORD.

NOW, RESPECT THE WORD, HONOR THE WORD, AND EXPECT THE WORD

TO WORK IN YOU.

DON'T EVER LEAVE WHERE YOU HAVE HEARD THE WORD PREACHED UNTO

AN ANOINTING AND THINK, "WELL, I DIDN'T GET ANYTHING."

EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GOT, YOU GOT SOMETHING BECAUSE

GOD'S WORD IS FULL OF POWER.

NOW, THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE AMPLIFIED BIBLE THAT SAID

A LOT IN PSALM 119 WHICH IF YOU'VE NEVER STUDIED PSALM 119,

I WANT TO GIVE YOU A HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT.

IT'S 166 VERSES.

IT'S THE LONGEST BOOK OF THE BIBLE AND IT IS ALL ABOUT

THE POWER OF GOD'S WORD.

THE ENTIRE PSALM, ALL 166 VERSES, IS ABOUT

THE POWER THAT'S IN GOD'S WORD.

IT IS AN AWESOME PIECE OF BIBLE LITERATURE THAT WILL JUST

ENCOURAGE US AND TEACH US.

AND SO, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PSALM 119 SAYS LIKE,

FOR EXAMPLE, 119:56 SAYS, "THIS I HAVE HAD [AS THE GIFT OF

YOUR GRACE AND AS MY REWARD]: THAT I HAVE KEPT YOUR PRECEPTS."

SO, HE SAID, "MY REWARD IS THAT I HAVE KEPT YOUR WORD."

SEE, OBEDIENCE TO GOD IS A REWARD.

LIVING AN OBEDIENT LIFESTYLE IS A REWARD FOR US BECAUSE WE FEEL

SO GOOD WHEN WE KNOW THAT WE'RE DOING THE RIGHT THING.

AND THEN THIS IS WHAT I LIKE.

IT COMES--IS BROUGHT OUT IN THIS PARTICULAR TRANSLATION.

IT SAYS, "HEARING, RECEIVING, LOVING, AND OBEYING THEM."

YOU SEE THAT AT THE VERY LAST AMPLIFICATION?

SO HE SAID, "THIS IS WHAT I DID WITH THE WORD, I HEARD IT,

I RECEIVED IT, I LOVED, AND I OBEYED IT."

I LOVE THAT.

SEE, SOME PEOPLE HEAR IT AND THEY DON'T RECEIVE IT.

YOU KNOW, THERE WOULD BE A LOT OF PEOPLE--I COULD HAVE WALKED

IN HERE TODAY AND SAID, "I'M GONNA TEACH FOR AN HOUR

ON GIVING."

AND RIGHT AWAY SOME PEOPLE WOULD HAVE PUT UP A WALL.

"ANOTHER PREACHER JUST TRYING TO GET YOUR MONEY."

I'M JUST TRYING TO POINT OUT THAT SOME THINGS THAT PEOPLE SAY

THEY'RE GONNA PREACH ON IT'S LIKE ALL OF A SUDDEN, NOW WALLS.

"WE AIN'T EVEN GONNA LISTEN TO THAT.

THERE AIN'T EVEN NO HEARING THAT.

I'LL SIT HERE AND DO SOMETHING, BUT I'M NOT GONNA--UH-UH,

I'M NOT GETTING THAT ONE."

WELL, ALL OF THE WORD IS FOR ALL OF US.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: ALL OF THE WORD IS FOR ALL OF US, HEARING, RECEIVING,

LOVING, AND OBEYING THE WORD OF GOD.

FEMALE: YEAH, I WAS IN AN ADULTEROUS SITUATION AND WHEN

I WAS FOUND OUT, OF COURSE, IT WAS VERY SCARY.

MY HUSBAND WAS WILLING TO FORGIVE ME AND IT TOOK A LONG

TIME FOR ME TO FORGIVE MYSELF.

FEMALE: I WAS IN A VERY DARK PLACE, VERY DEPRESSED PLACE.

I HAD REALLY BAD THOUGHTS.

IT DIDN'T THINK THE RIGHT WAY.

FEMALE: I JUST DUG INTO THE WORD.

I READ SCRIPTURAL BOOKS, OTHER SCRIPTURAL BOOKS.

AND I DUG INTO GOD'S WORD, YOU KNOW, AND HOW HE FORGIVES PEOPLE

AND I KEPT TELLING MYSELF, HE FORGIVES ME.

HE FORGIVES ME.

FEMALE: AND I STARTED APPLYING THE SCRIPTURES AND

THAT'S WHEN I UNDERSTOOD THAT THE WORD WAS POWERFUL AND THAT

IT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND THAT'S WHEN IT BECAME ALIVE

TO ME.

FEMALE: I AM A STAGE FOUR CANCER SURVIVOR, BREAST CANCER

THAT HAS SPREAD THROUGHOUT MY BODY, AND HAD I NOT BEEN ABLE TO

LEAN ON THE WORD OF GOD AND STAND ON THE TRUE PROMISE

AND BELIEVE THOSE PROMISES, I WOULD NOT BE HERE.

FEMALE: I GREW UP NOT KNOWING WHAT LOVE WAS, NOT LOVING MYSELF

AND THROUGH GOD'S WORD, I LEARNED ABOUT LOVE.

FEMALE: ONE WAY GOD'S WORD HAS CHANGED MY LIFE, I HAVE

A HISTORY OF DEPRESSION AND THROUGH JUST WORSHIP AND GETTING

TO GOD'S WORD, IT TRANSFORMED MY MIND.

FEMALE: I'M AT A GREAT PLACE NOW.

I HAVE PEACE AND I HAVE JOY.

AND, YOU KNOW, I STILL HAVE TEMPTATIONS AND TRIALS LIKE ALL

PEOPLE, BUT I KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM.

FEMALE: AND WHAT HE SAYS IN HIS WORD IS TRUE.

THERE'S NO GRAY, IT'S ALL BLACK AND WHITE AND IT'S EITHER ALL

TRUE OR IT'S NOT TRUE AND IF IT'S NOT TRUE, THAT MEANS GOD IS

A LIAR, AND HE IS NOT A LIAR.

GINGER: IT IS REALLY BEAUTIFUL HOW HONEST AND OPEN

PEOPLE CAN BE WITH THEIR LIVES.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING SOME REALLY MAJOR THINGS THAT YOU'VE

BEEN GOING THROUGH AND HOW GOD'S WORD IS HELPING YOU.

THERE'S MORE FROM JOYCE COMING UP SO DON'T GO AWAY BUT FIRST

HERE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE FROM SOCIAL MEDIA HOW GOD'S WORD IS

CHANGING LIVES.

THIS IS CHRISTINA FROM NORTH CAROLINA.

SHE SAYS, "I'VE BEEN DEALING WITH POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION AND

ONE THING THAT IS HELPING ME IS PUTTING SCRIPTURE UP AROUND

THE HOUSE ON ENCOURAGEMENT, THINKING, AND ATTITUDE.

BETWEEN OPENING THE BIBLE AND READING ALL THE MESSAGES AROUND

ME, I'M ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE DAY, EVEN THE DAYS THAT I FEEL I

CANNOT, I AM ABLE TO DO SO."

GREAT ENCOURAGEMENT, CHRISTINA.

EVERYONE, PRAY FOR CHRISTINA AND SHARE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN YOUR

LIFE TOO BECAUSE WE'RE A TEAM.

WE'RE A FAMILY AND IT REALLY DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

THIS WEEK'S SOCIAL DISCUSSION, WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURE

AND TELL US WHY.

IT'S A GREAT ONE.

READ THROUGH THOSE, IT WILL BE A WONDERFUL SOURCE OF

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR YOU TODAY.

THOSE WILL BE ON FACEBOOK AND ALSO ON TWITTER USING

#EA.

AND ANOTHER GREAT WORD TO JUST GET COMPLETELY BATHED IN THE

WORD OF GOD IS OUR OFFER TODAY.

IT'S CALLED "GOD'S WORD FOR YOUR LIFE" AND THIS IS AUDIO OF JOYCE

READING SCRIPTURE, JUST SCRIPTURE AND ENCOURAGEMENT

FROM JOYCE.

YOU CAN GET IT DIGITAL OR ON CD SO CHECK THOSE OUT TODAY.

JOYCE: JAMES 1:21, SO SAME ONE WE READ THIS BEFORE.

WE'RE GONNA START HERE.

"SO GET RID OF ALL UNCLEANNESS AND THE RAMPANT OUTGROWTH OF

WICKEDNESS, AND IN A HUMBLE (GENTLE, MODEST) SPIRIT RECEIVE

AND WELCOME THE WORD WHICH IMPLANTED AND ROOTED [IN YOUR

HEARTS] CONTAINS THE POWER TO SAVE YOUR SOULS.

BUT BE DOERS OF THE WORD [OBEY THE MESSAGE], AND NOT MERE

LISTENERS TO IT, BETRAYING YOURSELVES [INTO DECEPTION BY

REASONING CONTRARY TO THE TRUTH]

FOR IF ANYONE ONLY LISTENS TO THE WORD WITHOUT OBEYING IT AND

BEING A DOER OF IT, HE IS LIKE A MAN WHO LOOKS CAREFULLY AT HIS

[OWN] NATURAL FACE IN A MIRROR; FOR HE THOUGHTFULLY OBSERVES

HIMSELF, AND THEN GOES OFF AND PROMPTLY FORGETS WHAT

HE WAS LIKE.

BUT HE WHO LOOKS CAREFULLY INTO THE FAULTLESS LAW OF LIBERTY,

AND IS FAITHFUL TO IT AND PERSEVERES IN LOOKING INTO IT,

BEING NOT A HEEDLESS LISTENER WHO FORGETS BUT AN ACTIVE DOER

[WHO OBEYS], HE WILL BE BLESSED IN HIS LIFE OF DOING, HE WILL BE

BLESSED IN (HIS LIFE OF OBEDIENCE)."

NOW, HEARING THE WORD IS GREAT BUT OUR LIVES ARE NOT BLESSED

FROM HEARING IT, OUR LIVES ARE BLESSED FROM DOING IT.

AMEN?

WE NEED TO BE DOERS OF THE WORD OF GOD.

AND HE SAYS A VERY INTERESTING THING HERE, HE SAYS IF WE'RE NOT

DOERS OF THE WORD, IT'S BECAUSE WE REASON OUT SOME WAY IN OUR

MIND THAT EVEN THOUGH WE AGREE THAT IT'S TRUE, THAT IT'S OKAY

FOR US NOT TO DO IT.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I THINK ABOUT IT.

IF GOD SAYS IT AND IT'S CLEAR, AND I CAN SEE IT, AND I DON'T DO

IT, THEN I'M NOT DOING IT BECAUSE SOME WAY

IN MY MIND I'VE FIGURED OUT A REASON WHY IT'S OKAY FOR

ME NOT TO DO IT.

WELL, MAYBE YOU GOT A REASON, BUT YOU MISSED THE BLESSING.

AND IF WE WILL GET VERY SERIOUS ABOUT OBEYING THE WORD, THEN OUR

LIVES ARE GONNA CHANGE DRAMATICALLY, ABSOLUTELY

PHENOMENALLY DRAMATICALLY.

WE NEED TO MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD.

TO MEDITATE ON THE WORD MEANS TO ROLL IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER

IN YOUR MIND, TO MUTTER IT UNDER YOUR

BREATH, TO THINK ABOUT IT.

IN OTHER WORDS, I PUT DOWN HERE, "PREACH TO YOURSELF."

DO YOU KNOW I'M REALLY ON FIRE ABOUT THESE MESSAGES 'CAUSE I'VE

ALREADY PREACHED THESE TO MYSELF SEVERAL TIMES.

I MEAN, I WAS UP THIS MORNING AT 6 O'CLOCK PREACHING TO MYSELF.

WHILE I WAS DOING MY HAIR, I WAS PREACHING TO MYSELF.

WELL SEE, BY THE TIME I GET HERE, I OPEN MY MOUTH AND IT

JUST ROLLS OUT 'CAUSE I'VE BEEN PREACHING TO MYSELF.

WELL, IF YOU PREACH TO YOURSELF MORE IN YOUR QUIET TIME AND

PRIVATE TIME, WHEN YOU GET OUT AROUND PEOPLE, YOU'RE GONNA

BEHAVE A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE IF YOU SPEND

YOUR MORNING THINKING ABOUT WHO ALL YOU'RE MAD AT.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EVER TOLD YOUR KIDS, "NOW, MAKE

SURE YOU CHEW YOUR FOOD, DON'T SWALLOW THAT WHOLE?

CHEW YOUR FOOD.

CHEW THAT BETTER."

WELL, WHEN WE MEDITATE ON THE WORD, IT'S EQUIVALENT TO CHEWING

IT AND WHEN YOU CHEW YOUR FOOD, THAT'S HOW YOU GET ALL

THE NUTRIENTS OUT OF IT.

IF YOU SWALLOW IT WHOLE AND DON'T CHEW IT, THEN THERE'S

VITAMINS AND LIFE-GIVING NUTRIENTS IN IT THAT YOU DON'T

EVEN GET.

IT ACTUALLY CAN GIVE YOU INDIGESTION AND A TUMMY ACHE IF

YOU DON'T CHEW IT.

AND SO, MEDITATING ON THE WORD IT'S LIKE IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH

TO SHOW UP IN A BUILDING AND SIT THERE AND KIND OF HALFWAY SORT

OF MAYBE A LITTLE LISTEN TO WHAT'S BEING SAID.

NO, WE NEED TO FOCUS.

WE NEED TO HAVE A HUMBLE ATTITUDE.

WE NEED TO BE HUNGRY FOR THE WORD.

WE NEED TO BELIEVE THERE'S POWER IN THIS.

"I DON'T WANT TO MISS ANY OF IT.

IT'S WORKING IN ME RIGHT NOW.

THIS WORD IS HEALING ME."

I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE, WHEN THEY SIT UNDER THE WORD, CAN BE

HEALED OF SICKNESS AND DISEASE IF THEY'LL RELEASE THEIR FAITH

AND BELIEVE THAT THERE'S POWER IN THE WORD.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: THERE IS POWER IN THE WORD.

MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD.

JOHN 8:31 AND 32 JESUS SAID, "IF YOU ABIDE IN ME AND MY WORD

ABIDES IN YOU, YOU WILL KNOW THE TRUTH, THE TRUTH WILL MAKE

YOU FREE."

AND THE WORD "ABIDE" MEANS TO LIVE, DWELL, AND REMAIN IN YOU.

NOW, THE WORD OF GOD IS TRUTH.

HOW MANY OF YOU AGREE WITH THAT?

NOW, LET'S TALK FOR A MINUTE ABOUT SOME OF THE STUFF GOING ON

IN THE WORLD TODAY.

IS THERE ANY ABSOLUTE TRUTH?

WELL, OF COURSE, THERE IS.

I MEAN, IF THERE'S ABSOLUTELY, IF THERE'S NO ABSOLUTE TRUTH, WE

HAVE ALL GOT A REALLY, REALLY, REALLY HUGE PROBLEM.

I MEAN, I TRUST THAT GRAVITY'S ALWAYS GONNA BE THERE.

AND YOU SAY, "WELL, I DON'T BELIEVE IN GRAVITY."

WELL, DOESN'T MATTER WHETHER YOU DO OR NOT, IT'S NOT GONNA

GO AWAY.

THERE ARE ABSOLUTE TRUTHS AND THE WORD OF GOD, EXCUSE ME BUT

I'M GONNA DIE SAYING THIS AND I'LL SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.

AND I'M HAPPY TO SAY IT TODAY ON TELEVISION WHERE IT'S GOING ALL

AROUND THE WORLD.

THE WORD OF GOD IS ABSOLUTE TRUTH.

I BELIEVE IT, I BELIEVE ALL OF IT FROM COVER TO COVER.

I MAY NOT TOTALLY UNDERSTAND ALL OF IT, BUT I BELIEVE IT.

AMEN?

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: GOD IS GOOD.

WHY WOULD YOU NOT WANT A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

HE IS GOOD AND EVERYTHING THAT HE TELLS US NOT TO DO, IT'S

FOR OUR BENEFIT, EVERYTHING.

GOD'S NOT TRYING TO TAKE YOUR TOYS AWAY FROM YA.

HE'S TRYING TO KEEP YOU FROM KILLING YOURSELF.

GOD WANTS US TO HAVE A GOOD LIFE, AN AMAZING LIFE.

FEMALE: I WAS SENT TO PRISON AND I HAD LOST ALL HOPE AND

DESPAIR FOR MY LIFE, AND IT WAS THERE THAT I OPENED THE BIBLE.

MALE: THE WORD OF GOD REALLY CHANGED OUR LIFE FROM HELPING US

UNDERSTAND HOW WE NEED TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS A COUPLE,

AND SHOWING GOD'S LOVE TO ONE ANOTHER HAS BROUGHT US CLOSER

TOGETHER THE WAY GOD INTENDED MARRIAGE TO BE.

FEMALE: AND I GAVE HIM MY HEART AND MY WILL AND I'VE NEVER

BEEN THE SAME SINCE.

MALE: GOD'S WORD HAS REALLY SOLIDIFIED WHERE I AM AND HELPED

ME TO UNDERSTAND IT'S LIKE I'M GROWING NO MATTER HOW I FEEL ON

THE OUTSIDE 'CAUSE IT'S DONE THAT FOR SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE.

FEMALE: NO LONGER SELFISH AND THINKING OF MYSELF.

IT'S ALL ABOUT GETTING RID OF YOURSELF AND LOOKING AT

THE OTHER PERSON, AND IT MAKES A HUGE, HUGE DIFFERENCE IN

EVERYTHING THAT I DO EVERY DAY.

FEMALE: I'M WALKING ONE DAY AT A TIME WITH HIM AND HIS WORD

IS BREATH, LIFE, WATER.

WHEN I'M THIRSTY, I DRINK IT AND WHEN I'M HUNGRY, I EAT IT UP.

FEMALE: IN READING HIS WORD AND BEING DILIGENT IN HIS WORD,

IT JUST GAVE ME HOPE 'CAUSE EVEN THOUGH I WAS IN PRISON, I WAS

RELEASED FROM MY PRISON AND MY BONDAGES AND I HAVE BEEN,

THROUGH HIS VICTORY AND THROUGH CHRIST JESUS, I HAVE CLAIMED

VICTORY OVER DRUGS AND ALCOHOL.

AND I'VE BEEN DRUGS AND ALCOHOL FREE FOR ALMOST 5 YEARS NOW SO

THAT'S WHAT READING THE WORD HAS DONE FOR ME.

[MUSIC]

GINGER: SO, OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S WORD IS KEY TO OUR LIVES

CHANGING, BUT TAKE HEART, GOD WILL NOT ASK US TO DO ANYTHING

THAT HE HASN'T ALREADY GIVEN US THE ABILITY TO ACCOMPLISH.

THIS ALL WORKS.

THESE ARE REAL ANSWERS AND TODAY, WE WANT TO TELL YOU

ABOUT AN OFFER THAT I THINK WILL REALLY JUST ADD TO YOUR BIBLE

EXPERIENCE.

YOU'RE READING GOD'S WORD, WELL, YOU CAN LISTEN TO IT AS WELL.

THIS IS GOD'S WORD FOR YOUR LIFE AND IT'S AUDIO SCRIPTURES READ

THERE'S ALSO LITTLE ENCOURAGEMENTS AND WHAT I REALLY

LOVE ABOUT THIS IS THAT THEY ARE BROKEN UP INTO DIFFERENT TOPICS

IT MIGHT BE YOU NEED ENCOURAGEMENT, SOMETHING ON

DETERMINATION, SOMETHING ON TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF

PHYSICALLY, PRAYING FOR YOUR FINANCES, CONFESSIONS FOR

YOUR FAMILY.

THEY'RE ALL IN HERE AND IT'S REALLY GREAT.

AND IT'S ALSO A GOOD SOURCE TO HELP YOU MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE BY

LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

SO, GET THIS EITHER DIGITALLY OR YOUR CD COPY.

WE HOPE THAT YOU'LL DO IT TODAY.

DON'T WAIT AROUND.

LET THIS BE THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING THAT YOU NEED IN YOUR

LIFE TODAY.

NEXT WEEK ON EVERYDAY ANSWERS.

JOYCE: I DO NOT FEEL ONE BIT OF FEAR ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON

IN THE WORLD TODAY.

I AM NOT THE LEAST BIT AFRAID OF NOT BEING TAKEN CARE OF.

I'M NOT AFRAID THAT I'M GOING TO BE HURT.

YOU HEAR ALL THE VIOLENCE OUT THERE.

I'M NOT THE LEAST BIT AFRAID OF THAT.

I FEEL SO SAFE IN GOD'S ARMS.

I KNOW THAT GOD IS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF US.

GINGER: OF COURSE, IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION, WE ARE HERE

TO GATHER THOSE QUESTIONS AND ANSWER AS MANY AS WE CAN.

DO IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA, #ASKJOYCE.

WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH SO JUST REMEMBER THAT THE ANSWER

TO ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS, EVERY ONE OF THEM,

IS CONTAINED IN GOD'S WORD.

SO, LET'S CONTINUE TO DISCOVER THOSE ANSWERS TOGETHER.

WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME.

'Before long', 'Long before' & Big, Huge, Massive - Duration: 7:45.

Hey, we're in our room with interesting things again.

Yes, and it's time for a Q&A video.

Q&A - Questions and Answers.

And, we need to update everyone on The English Show too.

That's right.

But before we start, we should tell everyone to subscribe to this channel.

Good point.

It costs nothing and it means you stay up to date with all our videos.

We publish every Friday.

And thank you to everyone who's been sending us questions.

We've got several today.

Great.

Then let's start with them.

Ok, the first one is from Nimky Nimky, and he asks "...what's the difference between

before long and long before.

I never could before what's its meaning."

So, he could never work out how their meanings are different.

Yes, it's interesting, isn't it?

Yes.

Before long means soon - in a short amount of time.

So, if you watch our videos every day before long, your English will get better.

Yes.

Before long you'll notice an improvement.

So, before long means 'soon.'

But 'long before' is different, isn't it?

Yes.

If something happened long before something, it happened a long time ago - so much earlier

than something else.

I have an example.

(Whistles) This is a dinosaur.

it existed long before human beings.

So 'long before' means a long time ago before something else happened.

Yeah.

Thanks for that question Nimky Nimky.

It was a good one.

OK, next one.

Uh I can't quite pronounce the name of the person who asked this because it's written

in Thai.

Oh.

But the question is "...how different between big, huge, massive.

Thanks."

So, what' the difference between big, huge, and massive.

Great question.

They all mean the same thing, don't they?

Well, they can but we use them a little differently.

If something is large we can say it's big.

And if it's very, very large we can say it's huge or massive.

So, we can say there was a big crowd at Trump's inauguration.

And there was a huge crowd at Obama's inauguration.

Yes, Obama's crowd was huge or massive.

It was extremely large.

That's right.

Now another thing.

we can say very large, but we don't use the word 'very' with huge or massive.

So, Obama's crowd was really huge but we can't say it was 'very huge.'

Exactly. and 'massive' is interesting too.

We often use it to describe things that are very solid and heavy.

So - a massive castle, or a massive rock.

We could also say a massive explosion.

That's because we often use massive to describe things that are damaging.

So, a massive heart attack is a very big heart attack that causes a lot of harm.

Yeah, we could talk about a massive storm and a massive earthquake.

Yeah, they're bad things.

You know, we had a massive phone bill last month.

Hah, good example.

It was a very big phone bill that was very bad.

Stil, that was a great question.

OK, here's another.

It's from Imran Kalandar.

He's asking about our YouTube channel, and he says "...is this American English or British

English?"

Well that's easy.

It's both, Imran.

Yes, I'm American and I'm British.

I live in Philadelphia in the United States now, but I speak British English.

So, she sounds funny to me.

But, I understand her.

Sometimes.

Sometimes you understand me.

When there are differences in British and American we tell you about them.

And sometimes we make videos about the differences.

Maybe we should make some more of 'em.

Good idea.

Would you like that everyone?

And we have a similar question from Steven Sanchez.

He says, "...where is Fluency MC from?"

Ahhh.

Fluency MC, Flu...

Flu...

Fluency MC.

Fluency MC is our friend Jason R. Levine and he's American.

He used to live in New Jersey, near us in Philadelphia.

But he lives in Paris in France now.

We make The English Show videos together.

How many English Shows have we made so far?

Uh, fifteen I think.

We used to broadcast them live every week but we had some problems.

Yeah. Sometimes the stream would start and sometimes it wouldn't.

And, we had difficulty with the audio in the Skype calls too.

Yes, it depended on the internet speeds.

But sometimes it went out of sync.

The timing was wrong.

We couldn't fix that in a live show we decided to try recording it.

Yeah.

We're not giving up, we're experimenting with recordings now so I can edit them.

Last week we did a show with Shanti from English with a Twist and the recording worked much

better.

We've had lots of great guests and we've got lots more great guests lined up.

So, stay tuned.

Yeah and Fluence MC is going to be with us, of course.

It takes a while for me to edit The English Show videos because they're very long.

So we can't do them every week.

But we have some great shows planned.

What's your favourite bit of The English Show, Jay?

Oh, I like Fluency MC's raps.

Me too.

They're great practice.

And I like the games as well.

Yeah, they're pretty funny.

But, we should ask all our viewers "...what's your favorite part of the English Show?"

Tell us in the comments.

Yes.

And tell us if there's a topic or subject you'd like us to make an English Show about.

We read all your comments and really appreciate them.

And please keep sending us your questions.

You can write them below.

And join The English Show group on Facebook and you can write them there too.

OK, we should stop now and go write another English Show.

Yep - until next week.

Goodbye everyone.

Bye.

The NNU Experience - Duration: 1:01.

The campus community, all the students here, they've really taken me in and

really embraced me and made me feel welcome.

Here at NNU, there were students that I didn't even know saying "hi" to me when I was visiting.

This is so much like, community-wise, it's so big and this is like the love that everyone

has for you here.

I've just never felt so supported before, or encouraged to do what I love.

Being at NNU has challenged me in a lot of ways that have really affected who I am in

a very positive way.

I've been challenged to approach situations with a purpose, and that really changed the

way I look at my major and how I choose to live my life.

NNU equips you and pushes you to look beyond yourself.

To look at yourself as "hey I can make bigger changes."

I can, you know, affect my community.

I can affect the world.

How to check for accessible colors -- A11ycasts #17 - Duration: 10:35.

Hey everybody, what's up?

It's Rob Dodson, welcome back to the A11ycasts show.

Today we're going to be talking about color contrast.

So, in a nutshell, contrast is really the difference between two colors.

You know, if you imagine a color wheel, and you have two colors that are far apart on

the color wheel, or polar opposites on the color wheel, those colors are going to have

a lot of contrast because they're really really different.

Whereas, if you take two colors that are very close together on the color wheel, it's

going to be harder to tell the two apart.

Now, the reason why this is important in web design is because often times our whole goal

is convey some information to the user, usually through text and images.

But, if the contrast of our text is a little too subltle and too mixed in with the background,

it might be difficult for the user to read the page and that might sort of degrade the

user experience.

So what I wanted to do today is walk through some of the process that I use to sort of

check the page and figure out if it has appropriate contrast and how to tune it up if I find some

issues.

But to start, follow me over to my laptop and I have a little presentation that I want

to show you.

It kind of walks through how we measure contrast on the web.

So here I've got a set of text boxes on a white background and up above you can see

I've got these numbers up here for some contrast ratios.

So I'm measuring, in terms of luminance, the difference between this foreground color

and this background color.

Now, on the web we actually have guidelines that try to instruct us what our contrast

minimums should be.

So the web content accessibility guidelines in section 1.4.3 they say for body text you

want to aim for a contrast ratio of around 4.5:1 for like smaller text or your general

body copy.

For larger text, something that is 14 point bold or 18 point, you can ratchet that contrast

ratio down just a little bit to 3:1.

So if we go back and we look at our image of contrast, we've got these first two examples

would meet that minimum contrast requirement . So this one is just pure black on white

so its 15.9:1.

Thats really high contrast.

This one is a little more of a subtle grey but we still have 5.7:1, which is pretty nice.

These last two though are just a little too low contrast, so they wouldn't quite meet

that requirement.

We can also actually bump this up though, theres a enhanced contrast recommendation

in the web content accessibility guidelines as well.

So this is for situations where you know you might have either an older audience or a low

vision audience.

In that case we can bump the contrast ratio up to 7:1 or 4.5:1 for the regular body text.

So if we go back and we look at this example here really only this first one would meet

that enhanced contrast ratio requirement.

So, consider who your audience is going to be when you're building your site or application

and that can help decide where you want to aim on the contrast ratio scale.

I use a number of different tools to try to figure out if I'm nailing those contrast

ratio minimums.

And actually my friend Louise has done this really cool thing where he has put together

this accessibility testing for the web handbook called oatmeal which stands for open accessibility

testing methods for experts and lay folk.

He actually has a whole guide in here about how he measures color contrast and the folks

on his team do that.

And so we're going to kind of follow this guide a little bit.

We're not going to use all the exact same tools, but this is a really cool methodology

that you can check out and use in some of your own apps to maybe figure out your process.

So what I've got here is a website called the accessibility blog, and we're going

to follow two of the steps in that oatmeal guide doing a sort of semi-automated check

using a tool like aXe.

And then we'll do more of a manual spot check using WCAG color contrast analyzer.

So, starting on this site, the first thing I'm going to do is pop open my devtools.

I've already installed the aXe extension for chrome.

If you actually check out our previous episode on A11ycasts, Ill leave a link to this down

in the show notes, we covered all the different ways that you can install aXe on your system.

So I'm just using the extension for Chrome here, and I'm just going to open it up and

check out this page and hit the analyze button.

And you'll see that it tells me over here on the left that I have a few elements that

do not have sufficient color contrast, I've got about 7 issues here.

It'll try to give me a CSS selector to the elements that need some work, but there's

an inspect button that I often use to just inspect the element in the Dom, and I can

scroll up and say who exactly is this.

Alright, so we're starting of with these little anchors up here in our navigation and

this is one those areas that I see a lot where it looks like we're actually pretty close

to having good contrast here, but we're sort of the bubble, it's a little unclear

are we hitting that or not.

So what I'll often do is I'll take this foreground color and I'll take this background

color and I can use another tool, this one that I often use is called Lea Verou's Color

Contrast Checker, so I'll also include a link to this down in the show notes.

And then we can just drop in our foreground and that background color, and we can see

that the contrast ratio of these two is 3.6, so its not quite where we want to be for smaller

text.

Again, we want to bump that up to about 4.5.

So, this is an area where I know that I need to go back and, since I also have some of

these elements right here that are even lighter, and since I know that this is pure white text

and I can't make it any brighter, my only real option here would be to make this header

bar a darker blue so that all three of those links pop a bit more.

Another thing that we might notice in our tool if we step through some of the options

is that we also have areas down here like this little sub-heading which we've got

a kind of subtle grey on white thing going on, and again we can take that into Lea Verou's

Color Checker and we can figure out, you know, are we on the bubble.

One option, if we want we can make the text bigger, so we can maybe hit 3.0 contrast ratio.

That's one option, we just make the text sort of larger if we're on the bubble.

Or, we darken the foreground text because the background is pure white so we can't

really make the background any lighter.

So, we can go through and we can work through our CSS and tune those colors up and that's

really what a tool like aXe is doing.

It's actually looking at the CSS values for background and foreground.

But there are some situations where a tool like the aXe inspector is not going to be

able to tell us if we have contrast issues, and that's in situations where we don't

have clearly defined foreground background colors.

So, for instance, over here on the right I've still got this advertisement and these are

pretty common where you have some text over an image background and the text itself might

even be an image right?

So, for a tool like aXe, it can't pick out two distinct foreground background colors

so we're going to need to use another tool to figure out if we have contrast issues over

here.

So the tool that I like to use is the WCAG 2.0 Color Contrast Analyzer.

It's another Chrome extension, and I'm going to warn you it's a little bit buggy,

but I'm going to walk you through how I use it and maybe point out some of the issues

so you can work around those.

But basically what we do here is after we've installed the extension, we've got this

extension up here in the top right, click on that.

What I found to be sort of an issue here is, on retina monitors, if you try to tell it

to analyze a region and you select a region, it'll be sort of off.

Like, it sort of zooms in and it doesn't seem to be able to handle retina that well.

So, instead, I'll tell it to capture visible content.

And what this is going to do, you can see that it's already sort of zoomed in, what

this is going to do is it's going to try to scan all the pixels on the page and it'll

highlight the contrast between that pixel and the ones next to it.

So you can pick out those areas that have low contrast.

While it's scanning, so it will take a while right, it's only up to 27% so far, so I

can walk through some of these settings for you though.

So, the first one here is asking us what level we're measuring at.

So, again, I mentioned that we have the minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or we can take it

all the way up to the enhanced contrast ratio of 7:1 right?

So, again, you can choose your target there.

Then there's also this pixel radius option, and at first I wasn't quite sure what this

was for, by default it's set to one so it's going to compare the two pixels next to each

other, but it goes all the way up to 3.

Often times, when we're working with text on the page, it's not a clearly defined

the text ends here and the page starts here.

Instead, it'll do a sort of anti-aliasing thing.

So if we go and we look at the image of our text, tis D here it's acutally sort of three

colors.

So we've got a couple grey and then the solid white, and that's what forms the body

of that character.

When it's asking us the pixel radius that we want to use, it's basically asking us

what sort of anti-aliasing range do you want to accommodate for.

So, what I do is I tend to set it to 2.

That way I can analyze a couple pixels next to each other.

Alright cool , so it looks like it just finished, and what it's doing here is it's drawing

these white outlines to show us areas of high contrast.

And any areas where it gets sort of noisy kind of like right in here, we can tell that

we have slightly lower contrast.

If we go over and we look at that ad, we can see that yeah, we definitely have some issues

here.

So, up at the top, where it says developer friendly, it seems like it's doing ok.

We can toggle this mask on and off, so when we hide it we can see that when we get to

the body text inside of this ad it actually is even more translucent than the header,

and when we get down to the bottom, and it mixes with that background, it's really

really tough to see.

So, this is an area where we know we might have to go back to the designer and say "Hey,

I can show you this and I can definitively prove that there is a contrast issue here,

and this is a place where we need to maybe tune it up.

Either give the text a backing so it pops a little more, or figure out if we can use

a different background image, something that doesn't interfere with the text as much".

So yeah, using these tools and using a guide like oatmeal you can through you can analyze

the contrast for your site or application, maybe look for problem areas, tune it up,

make sure users have a better experience.

That about covers it for today, so if you have any questions for me, as always, you

can leave them down below in the comments, or hit me up on a social network of your choosing.

As always, thank you so much for watching and I'll see you next time.

invited somewhere you've been upgraded

from introvert to extrovert you've

officially graduated on the social world

popularity we all hate you and since

you've been upgraded I find myself no

longer enough to help you on your

journey

best of luck you're on your own I hope

you fail if someone trying to shake your

hand for a business interview no no

introverts don't do bodily contact

instead of shaking their hand like a

normal person I just licked your hand

they'll be so impressed by your tongue

licking skills that you'll get the job

but don't make it to Miley Cyrus because

we don't want this to get the wrong here

oh you say you're bored staying at home

O'Day and you just want to have some fun

I have the perfect thing for you it's

called internet stalking simply go to

their Instagram and scroll down to 32

weeks back and like all their pictures

this will make you all the friends

you'll become so popular you high school

look the first step to knitting anything

is that we're all internet creeps we

need to be no seriously I hate you high

school go being tired of home alone and

really want to go out what is wrong with

you just go to a drive-thru when they

ask you what you want just open up all

your problems and feelings as if they

were your therapist I'm so known and uh

you might have to bring friends and I

just need someone to love me then you

had the police code on you and finally

realize how great it was to stay at home

rather than rotten a jail cell yay for

you this leads me to my next tip don't

go outside avoid it at all cost this is

where everyone roams like zombies and

The Walking Dead and all the drama in

talking takes place not to me if you go

outside you'll be eaten alive and forced

to be social don't do it yes I know

everyone looks like they're having so

much fun being a social zombie asking

the other day one creating small talk

saying they're fine when in reality

nobody is fine you will die if you go

outside we're going to eat your brains

alive and turn you into a social robot

okay maybe don't eat your brains away

but you will die socially eventually

everyone outside will be abducted by

aliens and then you'll be safe but then

you'll have to deal with the other

introverts who finally come outside and

we'll deal with that later one step at a

time finding yourself not listening to

my previous tip and having to be social

in the lunchroom well honey bless your

little heart I warned you but if you

wouldn't win this jump on the table and

start a high school musical everyone

will join and you'll finally find the

love of your life and nobody not a

single person will take out their phone

to record and post it on YouTube to

socially embarrass you

is your ex trying to get back with you

well your social introvert and you have

an ex well good for you you go girl

now instead of confronting your crazy ex

and being an honest because hey honesty

is for chumps find a place to meet up

and tell them you're an international

goodness who works for b6 or kitty kills

for a living I'm probably gonna ruin

this relationship like I do with

everything in my life now big 19 years

of age I've had my fair share of

genitals I think I go but I wish I did

if you know what I'm saying

the part where you click off the video

is he or she grinding on you at the club

and you don't know how to tell them to

stop here's the jenna Marbles face not

working for you turn around and look

them dead in the eye and tell them you

have herpes bonus points if you actually

have it because then they will believe

you but if they don't believe you and

they're willing to take the risk just

throw up on them they're already both

drunking with this way you'll feel so

much better and so will they there you

go friends I hope I helped you if I did

make sure to hit that subscribe button

and if I didn't well looks like you're

just going to have to wait so the aliens

abduct everybody if you haven't cooked

away yet tap that little box over there

for some candy oh you don't like candy

look out that box right over there and

see a boy talk to a camera because well

his introverted life is facing an

existential crisis now I'll have to keep

this under 20 seconds because there's

probably going to cut me off before I

can

Always bowing down to the competition!

You'll be flattened on the road like most of your relatives!

Lousy Sega mascot!

You're an embarrassment to the great nation of Japan!

You are...

ITALIAN!!!!

That pyromaniac will burn the Mushroom Kingdom!

Where will I find a job if he does that?

Stephen King Says Trump More Horrifying Than Anything He's Ever Written - Duration: 3:58.

Horror novelist Stephen King came out this week and said that Donald Trump, president

of the United States is worse than any story he has ever written.

Basically Donald Trump is scarier than any villain or monster that one of the most prolific

horror writers in the world could dream up.

That's coming from that horror writer himself.

Now Stephen King has made it clear that he is absolutely no fan of Donald Trump and he

has been very critical of him since the beginning, but for him to come out and say that a guy

like Donald Trump is scarier than that clown from It or from that car that kills people

or from Thinner.

Great movie by the way.

That actually is really telling you something because Stephen King, I'm going to go ahead

and side with.

This is a guy that understands horror and terror.

Here's the thing.

Stephen King wasn't just saying this to get attention.

He wasn't just saying it to make a joke.

He was saying that the reason Donald Trump is so scary is because he really is a guy

who clearly has narcissistic personality disorder, but more importantly he is a guy who has narcissistic

personality disorder who also has the access to the US nuclear codes.

If Donald Trump were to order a nuclear strike right now, anywhere in the world, no one can

tell him no.

That is what Stephen King is getting at here.

None of his villains have ever had that kind of power.

None of them have ever had that kind of control over an entire government.

Being able to wipe out millions, millions of people with the flip of a button.

But Donald Trump does and that's why this man is so scary.

He's so scary because we don't know from one second to the next what his personality is

going to be like.

We don't know how he's going to respond to an overseas adversary saying something negative

about him or him perceiving them saying something negative about him.

That's the problem with his narcissistic personality disorder.

He is a very real threat to the United States and he's a threat to every other country on

the planet because nobody can predict how he's going to react to any given situation.

We know he can't take criticism.

We know he can't take a joke.

We know he can't take being talked down to or treated like he's not the alpha male in

any room that he walks into.

It's dangerous considering the arsenal that he has at his disposal at this point.

You know Congress really needs to step in and do something about this.

A man like Donald Trump or to be honest any person on this planet should not be able to

unilaterally say launch the nuclear weapons.

That is tyranny and I don't care if it's a Republican or a Democrat.

It shouldn't be the sole decision of one human being to drop the deadliest weapon ever made

and yet Donald Trump has that power.

Donald Trump the idiot man child who is running this country has the authority, the ability

to kill millions of people if he just gets in the mood to do so.

That's why Stephen King is telling us that yes, I've written some great horror stories

but nothing can compare with the horror of which the United States is going through today.

Take Off Your Face! -- DONG - Duration: 4:20.

Hey I'm Jake and ya know what? If you could just give me $3,000,000 that would be fantastic. No?

Okay how about 2. Well you are a tough talker. $1,000,000. Doesn't seem like we're really making any headway here and I know

that price is steep.it which is a caffeinated DONG something

can do online now guys.

I hate to METAL in your life but you should go to periodstats.com at least PERIODICALLY.

HeHe. Uhh. This table makes learning the elements pretty

easy. Click on one and this menu will appear where you can learn its name, general information,

electrons and ionisation, and engineering. NEAT. Oh gosh.

Let's TRANSITION to iron, which has two electrons on its inner

shell, eight on the second, fourteen on the third, and 2 on the outermost. Now let me

use the ELEMENT of surprise and...OH MY GOSH PEOPLE ARE FALLING

On Oimo.js, which provides a multitude of physics simulations. These use computer programs

meant to emulate physics in real life. This ragdoll mimics someone falling and collapsing.

In old video games when characters died it looked more rigid but with the ragdoll simulation

deaths look more realistic. Thank goodness. Collision deals with the computational problem of determining

where objects intersect. These can get complicated but at least we scratched the surface…

3D Plotter where you can create graphs with mathematical expressions in terms of x and

y to get a z value. The default is x squared minus y squared but you can change up the

way it looks by adding restraints like y is greater than x. Increase the resolution to

see more points and scroll over them to see what the three values are. You can rotate

this 3D plot around and around but if you get dizzy

and are gonna vomit

Put your hands over face. Where you upload

a photograph of your jaw-droopingly ravishing face and watch as it becomes two hands. Now

put away those hands because this next DONG only needs your voice.

Since you have to speak to travel. Press the spacebar to activate your microphone and say

the name of a place you've always wanted to go like France. Now look around and get

even more specific like Paris, France, the Taj Mahal, The Pyramids of Giza, and Sonic

Umbrella

It worked! That last one isn't an actual place but it is a cool website that simulates

the sound of various objects raining down. It will guide you through the beginning and

press the spacebar again to follow instructions. Then you will cycle through several different

types of precipitation followed by an announcement of what it is. Listen to what rubber ducks

sound like.

Aren't you just aMAZE…

Runner. Enter your name and use the arrow keys to solve it. You are timed and the final

score depends on how quickly you get through them and the level you achieved. It can be

difficult when the paths change so if you need to scream in frustration make sure you

go to

Bouncy Balls first because your voice controls their movement. Yell loudly to make them go

crazy. It may get overwhelmed but you didn't ask it's opinion did you? No bouncy balls, I didn't. Change from plastic to

bubbles, emojis, or eyeballs. When you alter the sensitivity the same noise will cause

it to react differently. With low sensitivity it'll do this but with high, it'll do

this. You can also use music to make them bounce to the beat. But enough bouncing eyeballs

it's time to

Go eat...bomb. You'll need a lot of clicking endurance for this multiplayer game. This

cute little monster goes around eating a balanced diet of cats, mushrooms, and other monsters.

Mushrooms give you more points than cats but monsters give you more than mushrooms. The

more points you obtain the larger you become and you have to be bigger than a monster to

Stay tuned to find out if I won. I didn't.

Links to all the DONGs can be found in the description below. There's also a playlist right here

filled with more DONGs. So many, so many amazing DONGs for you to look at and experience and play with.

Also if you wanna play with something, there is a new Curiosity Box out right now. This is what the shirt looks like.

Hannah this is your cue to put the shirt on screen.

Good work Hannah. So check it out. There's a link down in the description above the DONGs

Top line of the description. Curiositybox.com. It's a DONG. And as always, thanks for watching.

Crazy Nightmare - Duration: 5:42.

Okay, so, I wasn't sure that I wanna do another dream story video

But this is my channel so I can just post whatever I want

Recently I just had an extremely freaky dream that I will remember for a long time

I've had a bunch of scary dreams before

but this one takes the cake as the most disturbing dream I've ever had

So in this dream I was being my younger self and befriended this group of people

whom I never met in real life

There was one girl who bullied us all the time

She sent hate messages to our phones, calling us bad names

anything and everything to mess our days

She even took my doll house collections, which I actually had when I was a kid, and never gave them back

basically we all hated this girl with burning passion, and we decided to give her a piece of our mind

At night time, we snuck into the girl's house, which turned out to be a big mansion

for some reason she was all alone in the mansion, playing video games in her room

We quickly barricaded her room so she couldn't get out

then the other guys brought out plastic containers filled with gasoline

poured all their content in the mansion's hallway, and then...

Dragonite used Flamethrower!

Hehehehe, good riddance! Come on, let's get outta here!

I can't come up with something funny to describe that

It wasn't a joke. From the beginning they intended to burn the mansion together with the girl

They didn't notify me about that too!

at first, I thought we were just gonna lock her in and gave her a good scare

So naturally I freaked out, and went to look for my doll houses

Did I get this right?

Someone was being trapped inside a burning house, and all I cared about was saving my doll houses?!

I don't know what to say about that, it's so messed up!

I eventually found all my doll houses and escaped with the other guys

As we ran off, I looked back to see the mansion completely engulfed in flame

Then I heard the girl's scream

Cries of nothing but anguish and pain, as the fire took her life away

The next morning, we got a call from the police informing us about the fire

and asking us to come to the site

And for some reason, we came

I don't know why we did such a stupid thing

But we came to the charred remains of the mansion anyway

And when we got there, again, for some unknown reason,

the police took us inside the burnt mansion

As we strolled around the charred interior of the mansion

one guy behind us was stopped in his track, and began to tremble in fear

we all slowly turned our eyes into the direction he pointed...

and....there she was....on the staircase

the dream ended just when the girl's spirit began chasing us

but I don't want to talk about it, it's pretty jarring

you guys have no idea how grateful I was when I woke up

that it was just a dream, not a reality

Boy, I actually committed a murder in my dream

I've killed many creatures in my dream, but usually they were monsters that tried to kill me

Basically it was a kill or be killed situation

I never did that with normal human

And I don't think it was necessary to resort to such action

even with a rotten-to-the-core type of bully

The girl's scream when she burned to death was the scariest of all

It sounded too real to be a dream....I don't want to remember it

To this day, thinking about that scream makes me afraid to go to sleep

I still have no idea why I had such a dream

And to anyone watching, listen. YOU CAN'T KILL PEOPLE THAT YOU HATE, OKAY!

No matter what kind of bad things they did to you

MURDER IS WRONG

Don't do anything that makes people hate you

Or nobody's going to care if you're being trapped in a fire

(gasp) The truth has spoken!

But seriously, if you do bad things to people, then bad things will happen to you

Why is that so hard to understand nowadays?
