UNBELIEVABLE Animal Friendships! - Duration: 10:42.
Did you know that a gorilla could speak sign language and have a kitten as a pet?
Or that an elephant and a dog could share the same love for sports?
Here are 11 surprising animal friendships.
11.
Leo The Lion, Baloo The Bear, And Shere Khan The Tiger:
When police made a drug raid on an Atlanta home 13 years ago, they made quite a discovery
in the basement: a lion cub, a bear cub, and a tiger cub, which the drug dealer had been
keeping as pets.
The animals were in bad shape, but had formed a special bond.
The trio were moved to the Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary in Georgia, where they were nursed
back to health.
Baloo's injuries were the most serious; he had to undergo surgery to remove a harness
that was so tight his flesh had begun to grow around it.
Baloo's surgery was the only time the three brothers had ever been separated from one
another, and Shere Khan and Leo supposedly became extremely agitated because of it.
They were pacing and crying for the lost member of their family to return.
After his surgery, Baloo was returned to his brothers and the three have been together
ever since.
Today, they live on three acres at the sanctuary and spend lots of time cuddling together.
They nuzzle each other and play together to the extent that staffers at the sanctuary
call the unlikely trio the BLT.
10.
Themba The Elephant And Albert The Sheep:
Themba became an orphan at 6 months when his mother died after falling down a cliff.
The baby elephant was rescued by a team at Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre in South Africa,
who put him in an enclosure with a sheep named Albert.
Themba made a dash for the sheep and chased him around his watering hole, but by the next
morning, Albert was clearly bored and started venturing out into the main enclosure.
Themba wouldn't leave Albert's side and the two were seen exploring their enclosure together,
with Themba's trunk resting on Albert's back.
Ever since that moment Themba and Albert have been inseparable.
According to wildlife director Johan Joubert, "Albert copies everything Themba does.
In fact, they have almost the exact same diet.
Albert is the first sheep I have ever seen eat a thorny acacia bush."
Sadly, while the team at the Centre hoped to eventually introduce Themba back into the
wild, the elephant died suddenly in 2010.
9.
Owen the Hippo and Mzee the Tortoise:
Owen the Hippo was separated from his parents when a tsunami wave washed him out to sea.
After being found by wildlife rangers, he was taken to an animal sanctuary in Mombassa,
Kenya.
Owen's handlers decided that he would share a habitat with an ancient 100-year-old tortoise
called Mzee.
It was reported that Owen behaved towards Mzee, a male, as if the tortoise was his mother.
The hippo and tortoise would bathe and sleep together, and Owen would lick Mzee's face
and become protective if anyone approached the tortoise.
Hippos generally remain with their mothers for four years, and Owen stayed with Mzee
until 2007 when he was introduced to other hippos
8.
Molly the Labrador and Geraint the Sea Otter:
When a sea otter pup was found abandoned on a building site in Wales, it was taken to
a wildlife reserve to be fed and treated and returned to full health.
The aim was to heal the otter and set him free again.
After a few months at the reserve, the pup's handlers decided he needed a playmate to use
up some of his boisterous energy.
Since otters have a nasty nip and are very inquisitive it was thought the perfect playmate
for the pup would be a puppy.
An eight month old Labrador called Molly was brought in and the two played together while
the otter was taught to swim.
The otter, called Geraint, is due to be released in the very near future.
7.
Charlie the Capybara and Pacho the Dog: Capybaras are the largest rodents in the world.
Looking something like giant guinea pigs, they are native to South America and live
in herds.
At a tourist lodge in Peru, two animals – a capybara called Charlie and a dog called Pacho
– were rescued at about the same time.
Until he was rescued, Charlie had been kept as a pet by a local family.
Capybaras, though cute, make poor pets, and so it was the intention of his rescuers to
release Charlie – but he kept returning to the lodge in search of Pacho.
These days Charlie and Pacho are inseparable companions.
If Charlie goes too deep when the two are swimming, Pacho saves him – and in return,
Charlie often scavenges food to share with Pacho.
6.
Suriya the orangutan and Roscoe the hound: Suryia the orangutan and Roscoe a Blue Tick
hound became friends when they crossed paths at a South Carolina preserve for endangered
animals.
Now they swim together, play together and Suryia even takes the dog for his walks.
The pair first encountered each other two years ago when Roscoe followed staff from
The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (TIGERS) in Myrtle Beach.
He was immediately spotted by the orangutan who ambled over to make friends.
Dr Bhagavan Antle, founder of TIGERS said: 'Roscoe looked really thin and a little lost
so we fed him and took care of him.'He followed the staff through the gate and ran over and
found Suryia.
As soon as he saw Roscoe, Suryia ran over to him and they started playing.
It was unusual because dogs are usually scared of primates but they took to each other straight
away.
The staff made a few calls to see if he belonged to anyone and when no-one came forward, Roscoe
ended up staying.
Suryia is an animal ambassador at the preserve helping to raise baby primates but likes nothing
better than spending quality time with his canine friend on his day off.
They spend a few hours each day together rolling around, swimming and Suryia will take Roscoe
for walks around the enclosure and even feeds him some of his monkey biscuits.
When they are both feeling a little lazy they will go for a ride on the back of Bubbles,
the 27-year-old African elephant.
5.
The Lioness and the Baby Oryx: It was in the Samburu National Reserve of Kenya that a union
seemingly biblical occurred.
A friendship the locals called a message from God.
This remarkable event was the peaceful bond that formed between a baby antelope and a
lion, who was given the name Kamunyak, or "blessed one."
People came, wishing to see the strange pair with their own eyes, questioning how long
the predator would baby her prey.
The lioness, who had no cubs of her own and had been separated from her pride, adopted
the oryx.
She walked with him and slept with him and developed an intimacy social anthropologist
Saba Douglas Hamilton said defied the laws of nature.
The pairing puzzled experts who consider the big cat an enigma.
4.
Prince the golden retriever and Chobe the lioness
Dogs and cats have are known to be natural enemies, but not these two…
Prince, the Sussens' family pet dog, has a very special playmate – a wild lioness
called Chobe.
Chobe comes over to the family property at Tshukudu Game Reserve in Limpopo, and gently
roughs up her playmate on a regular basis.
The lioness actually grew up with Prince.
They met when Chobe was adopted as an orphan cub by the Sussens family.
The two animals got along great and became best friends.
Then, when Chobe was old enough, the sad but exciting day came to release her back into
the wild.
She learned to hunt for her food and survive in her new life as a wild lion.
Prince thought he had seen the last of feline friend.
However, much to Prince's delight, she never forgot him, and she still finds time in her
busy schedule to regularly pop in and play with her old pal.
3.
Pea the Ostrich and Jotto the Elephant: After its rescue by an elephant sanctuary in Kenya,
this ostrich spends her days cuddling with the other orphans as if she were just another
member of the herd.
Pea the ostrich, who was saved along with a baby elephant and her ostrich brother, Pod,
was brought to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Nairobi Nursery, a sanctuary
for elephants. The pair of ostriches grew up alongside the elephants since their 2014 rescue,
and the elephants can often be seen charging them, hugging them, or playfully attacking
them, according to DSWT.
Although the sanctuary intended to release them into the wild at the same time, Pod ended
up returning to their natural habitat early.
But, Pea managed to do just fine and even started to believe she's just another elephant
in the herd.
In particular, she spends her days snuggled up next to Jotto, a baby elephant rescued
to the sanctuary earlier this year.
Rescuers found Jotto when he was barely a month old.
The baby elephant had fallen to the bottom of a well.
According to DSWT, rescuers were unable to reunite him with his family and brought him
back to the DSWT Nairobi Nursery, where they treated him with a mud bath and special milk.
He soon became one of the many elephants at the sanctuary, but Pea the ostrich managed
to catch his eye.
Jotto is more than happy to enjoy a cuddle with his feathered friend.
These two orphans and many others, are being given the opportunity to heal and, when they
are ready, to return to the wild.
2.
Koko the Gorilla and All Ball the Kitten: Koko the gorilla is one of the most studied
primates in history.
Koko communicates in American Sign Language, and has been known to create her own terms
for new items and ideas using signs she already knows (calling a ring a 'finger-bracelet'
for instance).
Her handlers have been examining her remarkable ability to understand language.
In 1984, Koko asked her trainers whether she might be allowed to keep a pet cat.
She chose a grey kitten and called it All Ball.
Koko nurtured All Ball as if it were a baby gorilla, and would appear distressed when
parted from it.
When All Ball was knocked down and killed by a car, Koko was seen to mourn the cat's
death, and use signs for 'sad' and 'frown' to describe her feelings.
She has since had several more pets.
1.
Bella the Dog and Bubbles the Elephant: Just when you thought animal friendships couldn't
get any stranger, here is proof that size doesn't matter when it comes to friendships…
especially when you are crazy about the same sport, like these two.
Bubbles was a rescue elephant whose family was killed for ivory.
At three-years-old, she was taken in by the Myrtle Beach Safari Centre for Endangered
Animals.
Bella was just a puppy when she was also abandoned at the centre by her owner, who was building
a pool for Bubbles.
The two animals instantly discovered their shared love for water.
Bella also discovered her big friend made an excellent springboard and ball thrower.
Today they spend their time playing, swimming and walking together, and are almost inseparable.
