An ancient warrior culture from the outer rim planet of Mandalore, the Mandalorian people
have a long and tragic history, plagued by near constant wars and rebellions.
From the time of the Old republic, over a thousand years before the battle of yavin,
Mandalorians lived by a warrior's code of honor, following the Mand'alor, a single authority,
who'd proven themselves as their greatest warrior and earned the respect of the Mandalorian
clans.
This all powerful ruler was guarded by a group of elite and fiercely loyal soldiers known
as The Protectors.
To settle conflicts amongst their warriors and determine leadership, Challenges were
invoked, involving single combat to the death.
However some believed this honor was only granted to Mandalorians, and so challenges
from outside their race were not always respected.
Their skills as warriors allowed Mandalorians to spread beyond their homeworld, colonizing
and conquering many other planets and systems coming into conflict with the Jedi Order who
protected the government of the Old Republic.
The Mandalorians who lived for the thrill of battle, eventually went to war with the
Jedi Order, but were ultimately defeated by the powerful force users.
Despite their strained relations, not all mandalorians considered the Jedi their enemies,
with the legendary warrior Tarre Vizsla becoming the first Mandalorian inducted into the Jedi,
where he built a unique black bladed lightsaber known as the darksaber, which remained with
the Order after his death.
However, during the fall of the Old Republic, members of House Vizsla were able to break
into the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and steal the Darksaber, becoming a symbol of their
house.
After suffering a devastating defeat at the hands of the Jedi, the warriors of Mandalore
turned against each other, fighting civil wars for supremacy and rule.
These conflicts led to mass devastation on their home planet and even nearby worlds like
Concord Dawn.
In the last century before the Battle of Yavin, Mandalore once against erupted into civil
war.
The vicious conflict devastated the competing factions, killing the majority of their population
and turned much of the planet into desert.
From the ashes of the conflict, the New Mandalorian movement came to power, led by Duchess Satine
Kryze,* who rejected their warrior past, and embraced pacifism, transforming their culture
into one of intergalactic neutrality and non-violence.
With their home planet all but destroyed, bio-domes and bio-cubes were established to
create liveable areas for their people, exiling those who refused to accept the new government
to the moon of Concordia.
During the Clone Wars, Pre Vizsla, descendant of a powerful warrior Clan and the keeper
of the ancient Darksaber, organized the remaining warriors of Mandalore on Concordia, becoming
Governor of the region, while feigning loyalty to the new government, all the while planning
its downfall.
Forming the organization known as Death Watch, Pre Vizsla worked with the Confederacy of
Independent systems, organizing a number of terrorist attacks against the Mandalorian
homeworld.
They took action hoping to attract the attention of the Republic, so they might vote to intervene
in the conflict in order to safeguard against Separatist influence.
In this way Death Watch could accuse the Republic of invading their territory, and go to war
against them, liberating Mandalore from Republic control, and using their political capital
to depose the pacifist government which they would claim could not protect its own people.
However his plan fell apart when the Republic voted against sending troops to Mandalore,
forcing Death Watch into exile, becoming Outer Rim Mercenaries.
Eventually they were approached by Darth Maul, who had re-emerged alongside his brother Savage
Opress to create a base of power amongst the galaxies criminal underworld.
Maul and his organization known as the Shadow Collective persuaded Death Watch to join them
and together they invaded Mandalore and seized control.
With Dutchess Satine deposed, Pre-Vizsla saw his opportunity to at last seize the leadership
of his people, and so betrayed Maul, declaring himself and the Deathwatch as rulers of Mandalore.
Maul was outraged by this betrayal and invoked the Mandalorian tradition of single combat
to determine the leadership.
Pre-Vizsla agreed and they engaged in battle with Darth Maul emerging victorious.
Upon the death of Pre Vizsla, many within Death Watch knelt before their new leader
and pledged their loyalty.
However Bo-Katan Kryze, Pre-Vizsla's second in command, refused to accept Maul's supremacy,
and the Death Watch fractured, with many following Bo-Katan into rebellion.
Meanwhile, Obi Wan Kenobi travelled to Mandalore to investigate recent events on behalf of
the Jedi, but was caught and arrested while trying to rescue Duchess Satine.
The two were brought before Maul, who at last was able to achieve vengeance for his defeat
at the hands of Kenobi years earlier.
But rather then kill the Jedi Master, he chose to hurt the man instead, murdering Duchess
Satine before his eyes.
Killing the only woman Obi Wan ever loved.
Despite Maul's victory and conquest of the planet, his reign proved short lived.
When Darth Sidious learned of the return of his former apprentice he knew the Dathomirian
had become a dark side rival, and so personally went to Mandalore, defeating the Dathomirian
brothers in combat, killing Savage and capturing Maul.
Mandalore was left under the authority of Prime Minister Almec, a former ally of Duchess
Satine, who turned against her during the Clone Wars engaging in black market crime
until arrested.
During Maul's rule, he released the man and put him back in power.
An action which proved fortunate for the former Dark Lord, as Almec would later return the
favor, sending Mandalorian Commandos to free Maul from Separatist captivity.
And while Maul would go on to establish a new base of power on Dathomir, with the support
of the Shadow Collective and the darkside priestess Mother Talzin, Mandalore was left
divided, with the new government battling the remnants death watch, and both Separatist
and Republic armies watching their planet with great interest.
The Protectors, elite Mandalorian warriors traditionally led by the Ruler of Mandalore,
saw the Death Watch invasion of their world as a deep betrayal, and mistrusted their ties
to the Separatists.
This the led to an alliance with the Republic, helping to train Clone trooper pilots in Skull
Squadron, engaging in the 3rd battle of Mygeeto, in which the Mandalorian warrior Fen Rau led
Skull Squadron with Republic forces to defeat the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
After the Clone wars, and the transition from Republic to Empire, Mandalore was firmly under
Imperial control and so the Protectors formed a base of operations on the 3rd moon of Concord
Dawn, pledging loyalty to the Empire.
Other warriors followed Gar Saxon, Imperial Viceroy of Mandalore, and went on to serve
directly in the Imperial Military as Super Commandos.
The Royal Academy of their world was transformed into an Imperial Academy, where they recruited
eager young minds into their ranks, including a young girl named Sabine Wren of House Vizsla.
A brilliant student and courageous warrior, Sabine contributed greatly to weapons development
on the planet, only to realize that many of these weapons were then turned against her
own people, and used to keep them subjugated.
And while Sabine refused to accept the situation, her clan and family sided with the Empire,
causing her to escape the planet and join the rebel alliance.
Many years later as the Rebel Alliance made its way across the galaxy attempting to find
allies against the Empire, Kanan Jarrus and Sabine Wren met the Protectors, engaging them
in battle and fighting with distinction.
Their interactions gained the admiration and respect of Fen Rau, who began to rethink his
loyalty to the Empire.
However, the wavering loyalty of the Protectors was discovered by Viceroy Gar Saxon, who in
2BBY sent his forces to wipe out the Protectors, killing all except Fenn Rau, who then formerly
joined the Rebel Alliance to seek his revenge.
During a mission on Dathomir, Sabine and her rebel companions found and retrieved the darksaber,
which Fenn Rau recognized as the perfect symbol to unite the mandalorian clans once more.
Although hesitant at first, Sabine agreed to take up the sword, training under Kanan
Jarrus as she prepared to declare herself openly as the new Mand'alor.
Under Imperial control, this proud and ancient race was a shell of its former self, never
again able to regain the power and prestige they once held as a galactic power.
Many of their remaining warriors left their home system, becoming prized mercenaries and
bounty hunters, working for various powers throughout the galaxy.
Although many believed Jango Fett was one of these mercenaries, Prime Minister Almec
claimed he was not a mandalorian and simply a bounty hunter who'd acquired Mandalorian
armor.
Despite the many tragedies that faced the Mandalorian people, their legacy would live
on influencing events for many years to come.
