hey there booktube Katie here and you're
watching Katie Loves to Read. Today I'm here
to do by January wrap up part two. This
wrap-up includes the books i read during
diverseathon and a few other books.
So first off I'll start off with the Joy
Luck Club which I buddy read with Angie
from biblio galaxies. She doesn't; post a
whole lot but I'll her link down below all the
same. The Joy Luck Club tells the story
of four women who emigrated from China to
the US and it also tells the story of
their daughters and it's takes the form
of a bunch of different short stories
essentially that interconnect somewhat
because these four women all play
mahjong together. That was probably my
biggest critique of this book just that
it didn't feel like a cohesive whole. It
just felt like a series of disjointed
stories however i do still think it was
really enjoyable book i did get very
invested in some of the characters
particularly in the story of Rose Hsu
and I thought her story was particularly
interesting. I felt that i connected to
her a lot and was really rooting for her
throughout the book and I was happy when
she like popped up in other people's
stories.
Yeah I just expected to love this a bit
more but it did not all come together
for me to me and I gave it a
three-and-a-half stars. Then I finished
Down Among the Sticks and Bones
I got an arc of this one and this is the
sequel to Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan
McGuire except it's not really the
sequel. Its the second in the series, the second
in publication order but it's actually a
prequel every heart a doorway. it
follows Jack and Jill and their story when
they go to the evil creepy land that
they go to prior to showing up in every
heart of doorway at the school for
children who got kicked out of the
fantasy worlds that they go to and I really
enjoyed this one but I didn't love it as
much asEvery Heart a Doorway and I
suppose part of that stems from not
having an asexual character who i
connected to on a very deep level cause i
never read an ace character before but I did
think it was really good. I thought the tone
in this was really good it struck a
really great level of creepiness that I
definitely did enjoy. I though Seanan McGuire
did a great job at that. It also has
a lesbian character in it which is
wonderful to read about and I just
thought the world it was very cohesive
and immersive and I really did devour it
and I thought another interesting thing
about it was it discusses idea of
parents having kids to want to fit in a
sort of status symbol and I thought all
that discussion was definitely
interesting. In the end I gave it four stars
I just enjoyed this but I didn't love it,
it didn't have that wow factor for
me. Then I read Lightfinder by Aaron Paquette
who is a Metis author from Canada
i think particularly from Alberta and I
have a full spoiler-free review of this
one on my blog which is linked down
below. This is another case of I liked
this book but I didn't love it.
It follows a young Cree woman named
Aisling whose little brother has just
gone missing so she sets off with her
grandmother and her aunt and some other
characters to try and find him and as
she's doing so and traversing the forests
and stuff she begins to realize that a
lot of the legends that she heard about
growing up are actually true and she
gets involved in this kind of struggle
for the continuance of life on Earth. And
its dual prospective you also hear from
her brother find out where he is and
what he's doing and I thought it was a
very interesting novel but it didn't
feel like a complete novel or something.
It definitely was lacking the world
building department. I didn't find it to
be very immersive. I would have liked a
lot more description of what this area
of Canada's like because not being
Canadian and never having been to Canada
or to Alberta British Columbia *mumble* I
didn't really know and it does include
some illustrations which were definitely
helpful.
Some of them kind of give an idea of what
the landscape would be like and they're
beautiful. Like Aaron Paquette is a wonderful
artist and I definitely thought that that
did add to the book but it wasn't enough for me
to really feel immersed. However i did
really enjoy the characters. I definitely
not very invested in Aisling's story in a
way I didn't really expect to. I thought
it did justice to indigenous issues
and definitely discussed some of them
and some of the stereotypes of
indigenous people in Canada why those are
unfair.
It also features and indigenous
Australian character and I thought that
was done sensitively but not being an
indigenous Australian person so I cannot
definitely speak about but it didn't
seem to be problematic in any way. I
definitely enjoyed this but I gave it
three stars because it wasn't perfect
but it definitely has potential and I
would read the sequel. Then i read a book
on kindle and that was Radio Silence by
Alice Oseman. I don't want to say too
much about this, I do have a full spoiler-free
review video that you can of go and
watch but basically this is about a
young girl called Frances who just
really well in school but nobody knows
that she is obsessed with this podcast.
It's a youtube based podcast called
universe city and she's done a lot of fan art
for this podcast online. One day the
creator of the podcast who keeps his
identity very secret reaches out to her and
asks if she will participate in the
podcast and do some art for them and
her whole life changes. And yeah I
had quite a few issues with this novel.
Firstly the kind of bad parent trope that
we get in YA definitely reared its ugly
head here to the point where the
bad parent played the villainous
character and it just didn't feel
believable and I I I having had
good parents I really can't comment about
whether it actually is believable. But to me
it's was over done at times. Like there's
a point where the mother was spying on
them our the window and like pursues them
and follows them and tries to intervene
and just felt almost cartoony. Maybe
there if there was like more depth of
description or something it wouldn't
have felt so or the emotions
surrounding the whole situation but it
just didn't feel real.
Also I thought like the discussion of
demisexuality, because one of the
characters identifies as demi was very
bare. It was just like an Internet
definition and move on and that annoyed
me because I went into it expecting more
of a discussion of what it feels like to
be demi and I was looking forward to that
identifying as on the ace spectrum. So yeah I
don't know, it was good in other regards
but I only ended up giving it three
stars. Then another book that I didn't
love that I read
for the diverseathon was If I Ever Get Out of
Here by Eric Gansworth. Now this one
was better than those 2. I enjoyed it more
than than those 2. This tells the story of a
young guy who's growing up on the
Tuscarora indian reservation in New
York and he goes to a school off
reservation and one day a white guy
shows up and they strike up a friendship but
he doesn't want the white guy to
know he's really poor and its really
interesting. It's set in the seventies and
has a lot of you with music and the
Beatles and I really enjoyed that aspect
of it and i really enjoyed that it's so
much a book about friendship because i
don't think we got enough about
friendship in YA. We get a lot about
relationships, this had one or two
background relationships going on but it
was really just about friendship and
about these two characters being friends.
And I really enjoyed that I enjoyed
learning a lot about the Onondaga Nation
I think that's how you pronounce
it, you can correct me down below if
i'm wrong but i thought it was really
interesting. I thought it discussed
stereotypes and issues really
interestingly and I learned a lot and
I felt like I was definitely able to
connect on and then an empathy level if that
makes sense that definitely increased
my empathy and understand and I really
appreciate the book for that. However the
writing in this book was weird, like it's
really really difficult to get into and
it's not that it's using a dialect or
anything. It just that it almost holds you at
arm's length.
It's a bit cold or something and that
makes the story itself harder to enjoy
because it's hard to get invested into
it and it's hard to get invested in the
characters and in the friendship because
you're constantly feeling like you're
being held at arm's length. There's something
just weird and off about the writing
and that was disappointing because I
think otherwise it would have been like
a four or a four-and-a-half star story
but instead i have to give it three and
a half stars because the writing was
off-putting to me and made me not want
to pick the book up to finish it. I
can't put my finger on exactly what was
wrong with the writing but just overall
didn't work. Then finally I was getting a
bit burnt out on life and the internet
the news and current affairs
and books that dealt with important
things because my brain just didn't have
the space to process them because my
anxiety was off the charts so I decided
to pick up a fun escapist book and that
ended up being Shadows of Self by
Brandon Sanderson and this is the second
book and the mistborn era two or the Wax
and Wayne saga. But it follows
Wax and Wayne who are this pair who
fight crime essentially and this book
was really really fun and it was
everything I wanted it to be.
It was predictable occasionally not so
much as the alloy of law which is
the first book in the series.
I felt we got to know Wax and Wayne
better and I feel we also got to know
Merissy a lot better in this book and I
became really invested in her character
more so than i had been before
even though I felt like we connected
before because we're both law students but
now I'm more invested in her character. I
have a lot of fun and this was a wild
adventure that i very much enjoyed
and I think this is my favorite book in
the series because I read sequel Bands of
Mourning and I didn't like that one so
much like it was like a three-star read
but probably my least favorite series.
this one was my favourite in the series so I gave it
4 stars. I actually for a fun escapist
series i would definitely recommend the
wax and wane saga if you're interested.
It was one that i put off reading
because I heard some pretty bad things
about it because it's so different from
the original mistborn saga in tone and
storyline but you know sometimes you
need that light fun time with also a
super cool magic system and this has that. So
yeah anyway that's all i have to talk
about today. Thank you guys for watching
and I'll see you in my next video bye!
