Japanese Shrine Yushima Tenjin Plum Blossoms - Duration: 5:19.

well hello everybody, good morning.

We're here at Yushima Tenmangu

Its a temple here in Tokyo.

Famous for its UME, its plum blossoms.

And we're gonna walk through, a little

..tour through the temple. A little windy today

hopefully the microphone holds out.

Located a few city blocks away from Tokyo University

Is Yushima Tenmangu.

Its a popular shrine, originally built in 458 A.D.

In the mid-thirteen hundreds, Tenjin was enshrined here.

As the shinto god of scholarship.

Tenjin is a diefication of Sugawara no Michizane.

Who was a poet who lived in the early Heian period.

Around 845-903 A.D.

We'll come back to Tenjin in a moment.

So this shrine is one of the few shrines that have a copper torii(鳥居）

Here you can see the plum blossom motif.

on the shimaki.

It's quite beautiful, I think.

Ornately decorated and inscribed.

During February and March this temple holds an, Ume Matsuri.
