R.E.M. blasts Trumps retweeting video that uses the song Everybody Hurts to mock Democrats Politic

Alternative rockers R.E.M. are not happy that Trump retweeted a snarky video clip from his State of the Union address that features the bands early 90s song "Everybody Hurts." The earnest ballad plays over clips of Democrats looking none too pleased with the speech.

The video was created by pro Trump memester and has become the latest in a long line of disputes between politicians and rock stars.

R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills blasted Carpe Donktum and Trump, calling them both a name we cant use here. "Measures have been taken to stop it. @jack you need to get on this," he tweeted, calling out Twitter honcho Jack Dorsey.

The clip was removed from the Presidents account but can still be found elsewhere.

The band tweeted a more family friendly response: "World Leader PRETEND!!! Congress, Media ghost this faker!!! Love, R.E.M."

The groups song "World Leader Pretend" included the lyrics, "I raised the wall and I will be the one to knock it down."

The Athens, Georgia based foursome was one of the countrys top rock bands through the 1980s and 90s. Other hits include "Losing My Religion," "Stand" and "Orange Crush." R.E.M. broke up in 2011.

The latest in a string of clashes over songs

In 2015, for playing another R.E.M. tune on the campaign trail, "Its the End of the World as We Know It And I Feel Fine ."

"Go f asterisk ck yourselves, the lot of you you sad, attention grabbing, power hungry little men," Stipe said in an email to "Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign."

, the band was more polite.

"While we do not authorize or condone the use of our music at this political event, and do ask that these candidates cease and desist from doing so, let us remember that there are things of greater importance at stake here," R.E.M. said.

"The media and the American voter should focus on the bigger picture, and not allow grandstanding politicians to distract us from the pressing issues of the day and of the current Presidential campaign."

Other rock n roll dust ups include:

REM publisher asks Twitter to remove video tweeted by Trump over song use

A satirical video using music from rock band R.E.M., which was shared by the Twitter account of President , has been removed from the social media site after the publisher of the bands songs complained.

A lawyer for Universal Music Publishing Group had reached out to Twitter on Friday asking that the video, which was first posted by another user, be taken down from the platform, according to a source familiar with the situation, who asked to remain anonymous.

The clip, which runs more than two minutes in length, plays audio from R.E.M.s early 90s hit single "Everybody Hurts" over excerpts from Trumps Feb. 5 State of the Union address.

But, as of the early hours Saturday ET, Twitter users could not play the video posted by Trump, and many saw a message that read, "This video has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder."

The creator of the video that the president tweeted Friday, self proclaimed Trump supporter @CarpeDonktum, accused Twitter of censorship after the clip became unplayable on the platform.

The clip, clearly meant to mock a selection of lawmakers in Congress, cuts lines from Trumps speech together with reaction shots of stern looking politicians whom Trump has criticized in the past. They include Sen. Bernie Sanders, I Vt., Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D N.Y., and Sen. Mitt Romney, R Utah.

Trumps tweet with the video clip had been pinned to the top of his accounts page by Friday afternoon. But it appeared to have been un pinned by Saturday.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBCs questions about the presidents tweet. A spokesman for Twitter declined to comment.

Trump has drawn criticism for using copyrighted content before: The Rolling Stones "You Cant Always Get What You Want" was often used at the end of Trump campaign rallies and has been used at Trump events since he became president. The band urged Trump to stop using the song, .

In November, Trump tweeted an image of himself featuring the text overlay "Sanctions are coming," which . HBO said at the time that they "would prefer our trademark not be misappropriated for political purposes," but the presidents tweet was not taken down.

R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills took notice of the use of his bands song in the video that Trump tweeted Friday.

"Measures have been taken to stop it," Mills tweeted, adding that Twitter CEO needs "to get on this."

Mills said that the president had retweeted the video from Twitter account @CarpeDonktum, who is credited in the video. That account defended using potentially copyrighted material in its own content.

Mills, for his part, celebrated the removal of the video with a tweet calling back to .

R.E.M. reached a publishing agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group in .
