- Hello Hunnay!
Welcome to my first episode.
(squeals excitement)
I'm so excited, it's an honor, to welcome you into my life.
I want to strip down everything about,
these lashes, this makeup, this fit right now,
these uncomfortable heels that I'm sitting in,
to just really show you what it is that I did,
in order to be my most confident version of who I am.
We're gonna talk about fitness, fashion, food, my culture,
family, dating, sex, yes 'cause she's single now.
But this is how real we're about to get 'cause I want you
to jump into where I am in my life right now.
I'm so appreciative that you're here with me.
So we 'bout to turn this out, get comfortable!
(jazzy upbeat music)
I've always loved doing television,
but I've never been able to connect
and social media changed that for me.
Yo, I stay up at night reading my 'gram comments like crazy.
I had posted a workout picture, this young woman said,
"I can't even get out of my bed to go and fit in a workout."
"So I haven't even really worked out for years,
"but I hate my body."
That crushed me, I used to be that girl.
First of all, I don't have it all.
I look like I do because of this highlight reel of Instagram
I'm gonna tell you right now that's not real,
I know how to pick the best moments of my life,
and I'm not always motivated, you guys actually inspire me.
You guys reflect the circle of friends I have.
We talk about the same questions,
what should you wear on the first date?
When it comes to money, how do you invest?
How much do you have to have?
At what age are you gonna stop hating on your body?
These are questions that I really have with my friends,
that made me go, Yo!
We gotta connect closer to this!
To that young girl who hit me up on Instagram,
I hear you, I see you, and I want to use this to show you,
how you can get to the best version of yourself too.
I don't know if you've ever seen any of my work,
I don't want to assume that you have, so let's just start
like we've never met before, okay?
So I'm basically I am a television personality,
with a huge passion for fashion and personal style.
So I started my career hosting a makeover series
called How Do I Look?
I've been in tv for maybe almost 15 years.
I was doing makeup and I loved working on celebrities,
but my passion was with the everyday person.
So when I would go out and do makeup on celebrities,
I would come home to San Jose
and I would work with people in their homes
and so many people asked me,
"How you get Cyndi Lauper's makeup to stay on?"
"How did you get Alicia Key's eyes to be so smokey?"
"How did you get Missy Elliott
"to look so sculpted and ferocious?"
And all these tips that I was giving to the everyday person,
How to save money buying drugstore makeup,
for every girl who doesn't look like the everyday supermodel
how to learn those tricks
to make yourself feel like you are.
I moved to LA with $271 dollars in my pocket.
I knew how to shop well and style myself well.
Thank god to E! Network, they gave me my first series,
which was, How do I look?
And it kinda just took off from there.
I co-host an amazing talk show called The Real,
with three other beautiful women, Loni Love,
Tamara Mowry-Housley, Adrienne Houghton,
whose also my neighbor on Kin,
I love her show, she's actually one of the inspirations
when it comes to doing a show on this network.
Oh, I didn't announce this!
This is crazy! (trumpets announcing)
So I'm officially the new live red carpet host for E!
This is incredible, because I love E!
And like I just told you full circle,
they were one of my first jobs here in Hollywood.
When it comes to tv, I'm talking to you,
and you guys don't get to talk back.
I want you guys to be able to watch my show
whether you're sitting at the bus stop,
or whether you're at work sneaking in a little break,
or you're on a date and you realize your date's whack
so you decide to come and have a night with me!
Whatever it may be!
I want to be at your fingertips, now I get to call myself
a web series host, I guess?
Webhost?
I'm a, a Wost?
What does that mean?
Is that what it is?
I'm always gonna be your genie though,
that's what's important.
So hunnay!
I'm 40!
I had the most incredible roller skating party for my 40th.
All my friends and family was there,
we turned the f up, and it was slick.
A lot has happened in this house,
especially in the last year, like her getting divorced.
After the divorce happened, I was in this house by myself,
with some really rough days,
so the one person that I could call to to be beside me,
was my mom, Mama Mai.
Mama Mai if you've never met or heard of her,
she's a vivacious amazing colorful
sparkle of a human being in my life.
Now that I'm at kinda the most vulnerable place in my life,
where I do feel doubtful about choices that I've made
and I do feel lonely at times,
and sometimes
it can be a little
a little scary about what's next
at forty, so I moved Mama Mai in.
Like she's actually floating around this room right now,
probably eavesdropping on us.
Living in a house with my mom for the first time
is really new, she's nosy, she's petty,
she's always up in my business,
she takes things that doesn't belong to her,
she goes in my closet all the time,
borrows things without asking takes them back
to her other house in Houston, without asking me.
- They can use whatever I want to!
That's what you said.
- I did not say you could use everything that you want to...
- [Mama Mai] Mom's welcome to my house,
you can use whatever you want to,
whatever is mine is yours. - You could just ask.
- [Mama Mai] I don't ask because you said
I can use whatever I want to.
- So we'll talk about this later on, after the show.
- [Mama Mai] Whatever.
- So anyway, Mama Mai has made herself very comfortable
in my house, key word, Mai house.
The house itself now, has been something that
has really been weighing on me.
It's a little sad sometimes in this house.
It really is, now don't get me wrong, I feel very thankful,
to have been able to purchase my first home,
that I basically saved all of my money until I was about 35,
every single dollar is put in this house.
I was also sharing this house with another person,
so now that that has changed,
this house, it needs an upgrade.
It's hard because my life is so busy that it is go, go, go.
I wake up at 3:30 in the morning
to shoot a live daily talk show,
and when I walk back into the house,
I'm hit again with that reminder, like this couch,
I hate this couch.
This is the couch where all the conversations
happened in this house, all the fights
that have been had in this house.
I also think our conversation of getting a divorce
took place on this very couch.
When your entire house is what the marriage was,
it's hard to do that.
I'm gonna be real with you, if you were my friend,
you would be here helping me move, you would be here
throwing down some whiskey with me, goin alright,
get rid of this table, I need you to paint this over,
what is this, is this you and him, or is this you?
I need that friend, so if you're gonna watch this show,
you're gonna be that friend with me.
I don't want a brown couch, like I'm so much more colorful,
jewel tones and the look of lux, and gold and teals,
life, things that look lively,
and this couch is not giving me that!
- [Mama Mai] He's a cow.
- What?
- [Mama Mai] With that cow, that color remind, he's a cow.
- My mom also has her opinion about my ex.
That's comment on her page for that.
Health and body is a huge part of my life today,
because I didn't realize that I was low key abusing myself.
The idea of being skinny became
something that was most appealing to me.
Even if you watch The Real, from season 1 to season 4,
I was always 100 pounds.
I started to really work hard to stay petite
and to not gain weight and to stay sample size.
I didn't realize that until I saw a picture of myself
where my knees were really pointy
and my shoulders were pointy.
I have no problem with people being skinnier,
that's not what I'm pointing out.
To me, is that I looked weak.
I like to look at myself as a strong, resilient,
capable woman, and that's not who I saw in that picture.
And so I was talking to my friend about it and she said,
"Jeannie, you know that you could change the way you look,
"you just don't have anything to work with,
"girl you barely eat."
Her calling me out like that was way too real,
and I realized that I had an eating disorder in which
I controlled myself to a point that I would now let myself
enjoy what I wanted to eat or eat what I needed to eat,
all to stay a certain size.
I would not eat past 7, that's like I remember,
people would invite me out to dinner,
I would pretend to eat, I would put food on my plate
and I would pick at it and I always ordered food to share.
All to say, when I finally heard from my friend
that I could change my body, I was like,
tell me more, what are you talking about?
She started to break down what I should be eating,
the nutritious foods, the whole foods, the grains,
and the carbs that are healthy to burn energy,
and I gained 20 pounds, so now,
I've totally got a new perspective on body.
So after gaining 20 pounds, I got myself into the gym,
I love how it feels to go into the gym,
crank on my favorite music and literally sweat out
all of the things that stress me out, that worry me,
that make me sad, that make me feel like I have self shame,
that weigh down on me and I always walk out
feeling lighter and stronger.
Now remember, it's hard for me to actually get up
and want to go work out, however, I've got a few tricks
that I've learned completely can change your mind set
so that you can be motivated to get out there
and do what you need to do for yourself,
and I'm gonna teach you that through this show.
Strong is sexy.
When you feel stronger about yourself, you feel sexier,
and that's a place I want to get you to.
Mom go get me some whiskey, please, please, please?
- [Mama Mai] No more whiskey, I drink it all.
- Mom!
I'm going to share some stories with you of what not to do
because I blew my first three dates, we'll talk about that.
I also want to talk about sex,
there's a big difference between marriage panties
and single panties, what?
- [Mama Mai] Where condom.
- We'll talk about that.
And I'm giving Mama Mai a makeover, I have been wanting
to give this woman a makeover for the longest time.
Her hair's all straggly and done to here.
We've gotta hoist the hunnay's up
because her boobs are like, Mom your boob's are sagging.
- [Mama Mai] We've three kids, quite talking about.
- I'm going to make everything a lot more lux and single.
(hip-hop music)
