Hi everybody and welcome to week number 8 of our class this week! We're going to be studying chapter
7 which is all about social stratification.
The word stratification actually comes from geology
where you can look at the different strata of a rock, the different layers of rock, and understand its age.
The same thing happens in society...
every society on the face of its earth
stratifies its people. In other words, it layers them based on "something".
No society on the earth has everybody equal and
what we're going to see in this chapter is 3 of the most common ways society stratify their people.
We're going to look at slavery,
We're going to look at the caste system, and we're going to look a little bit at the social class system.
We'll study that more in Chapter 8 since that's the way we use to stratify people (among other things as well of course).
So anyway, this week what we're going to focus on is slavery...
I want you to think about slavery in the modern day era. We kind of assume that
slavery is over
since we did have the emancipation of African Americans in the
1860s. However, modern-day slavery is still a huge huge thing.
Statistics say that more people are in slavery now than ever before and yes it happens the United States as well.
Now we often call it human trafficking.
But the slavery aspect of it is still very very real and
I think it'll be an interesting thing to learn about. A lot of students
don't realize how much slavery is still out there today, and how a lot of other countries, for example a lot of African countries,
still have slaves the way we saw them in the United States
decades ago in terms of the forced labor, the chains, the ownership, etc.
So there's kind of two ways we see
slavery now in the modern world, more on the side of human trafficking and more on the side of
slavery as we have envisioned it in the past. So
anyway, we will talk about these issues this week in class of course. We're going to have our quiz as well.
I am getting your tests in, it's Friday when I'm making this, and I will get those graded as soon as I can and
then
starting the week of March 12 through March 18, we are going to have spring break.
So we're all going to have a week off and we will resume our class then on March 19th.
So just kind of be prepared
after this week for a little bit of a rest, okay?
By the way you all should have your books now for the book review. I've
helped you in terms giving you some ideas in our instructions,
and then one of our announcements. The librarians here at Richland are excellent and they can help you,
but I want you to find books that means something to you
so it's very difficult for me to suggest a book because I don't know what you're looking for and
with over what 200 students a semester, it would be difficult to do that anyway.
And I want this to be something that you choose
so you can kind of see what's out there and see what you want to pursue in terms of some extra knowledge, okay?

I'd definitely say they were getting a high spec product. They've got a really nice sized plot.

Hi I'm Rob I work for the Development team at Leeds Federated, we're planning
to build 750 homes over the next 5 years. We're here in Harrogate, at Claro Road
and looking at 2 blocks of apartments for rent and shared ownership. So these
properties have fitted carpets and kitchens with appliances so this makes
it really easy for people to move straight in and get set up.
So here on Skipton Road in Harrogate we have a mixture of two and
three-bedroom houses which are available for rent and for shared ownership.
It's a really exciting time here at Leeds federated as we build more houses
than ever so that people can have great quality homes.

Congratulations to the Carlton Wrestling Team on their performance this weekend at the Regional
Championships in Swift Current this past weekend.
Regional Champions are Kaylin Anderson, Samantha Paradis and Maggie Theissen.
Winning silver were Shai Hryniuk, Elijah McPherson, and Shannon Spademan.
Josee Trzaskowski won a bronze.
Also qualifying for Provincials were Kiera Beauchesne, Brianna Paradis and Serenity Desjarlais.
Congratulations to all of you, and good luck at provincials this week.
Congrats also to our basketball and curling teams who competed this past weekend.
The senior girls won first place at their home tournament.
