For standard five, the artifacts presented here demonstrate my ability to
explore, evaluate, synthesize and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning
and improve performance.
In EdTech 504, I completed a research project on the use of Problem-based Learning and technology to enhance science education.
Through research and subsequent writing, I learned the true meaning of
Problem-Based Learning. My new understanding has had a profound effect
on my teaching. I now use the solving of a problem as a way to engage students in
learning about science and have students use technology as a tool to help them
investigate and work towards a solution. Together Problem-Based Learning and
technology lets students take control of their own learning as they work to build
meaning about the world around them.
Another artifact where research played an important role was in EdTech 503 and the creation of my instructional design
project. The project focuses on teaching students to use Google Forms and sheets
as a way to gather analyze and present data. In understanding the importance of
a needs assessment planning, the use of learning theory and proper evaluation
tools I am better able to set and meet goals when creating and implementing
technology. Many of the skills learned while creating this artifact I use today
in designing classroom technology instruction for my students.
The last two artifacts are all about the importance of proper documentation during research.
In EdTech 501, I constructed my first annotated bibliography. This was my first
exposure to APA style when writing and citing the work of others. While the
bibliography was not used for a later paper, the practice in using APA was
invaluable.
Later in EdTech 504, I constructed a second annotated bibliography for use when writing my final synthesis paper. I
felt more at ease with citing work and now understand the importance of using
an annotated bibliography to help construct a coherent and
well-thought-out academic paper. The analysis of each cited work helped to
refine my paper. Both assignments have strengthened my writing and my knowledge
and skill on incorporating the work of others into my own.
Through these and other artifacts I am confident in my understanding of the importance of research to assist colleagues in
utilizing best practices, research methodologies and current theory when
creating and implementing technology and utilizing proper guidelines when
researching and incorporating work of others into their own work.
